Massive fan of this guy back in the late 90s. I didn't know he was still doing things. I thought he was an electronic musician for a bit and then faded away. I've actually still been hearing his music in movies and didn't realize it. His Junkie XL stuff with Rudeboy from Urban Dance Squad was some of my favorite stuff back then. Melange, Billy Club, Roster... those songs were blowing my old Nissan up back then.

It's a great analog to Rick's channel from the contemporary rock aspect. Thanks guys, this really means a lot to us. You guys are embracing the most valuable aspect that youtube provides - education. James Bernard was the Dracula composer, and he had a long career after Dracula. He created many classic British film scores from the late 50s into the mid 70s, then made something of a comeback in his final years as a new generation discovered him. He's one of my favorite composers.

Thuis is so great! I remember seeing Tom with his band 'Weekend at Waikiki' at the OJC Staddijk, Nijmegen in the Netherlands. That was a long time ago (mid eighties I guess?). I still remember that concert and I went to see two or three concert each week and I forgot most of them, but not Weekend at Waikiki. So why do I remember that gig? I mean, I remember I thought it was great (even though I don't remember the music itself), I remember the name of the band (very important if you want a career) and I remember I had a wonderful evening and I really enjoyed myself. Now, Tom Holkenborg is a very clever man. He is now and he was back then. What he did was quite simple. He just made sure I would never forget that gig, because he and his band changed the whole place. They used fake plants and camo nets and other stuff. Every band I saw there played on that same stage, under the same lights, in the same room. Tom and his friends changed all that, so I remember it even to this day. I still use this story to tell young bands that they don't need thousands of euro's to be recognised. Again, I've seen many young bands, plenty of them were pretty good, but I forgot everything about it. I can't remember the songs of Tom's band, but atleast I remember it was good, I remember I had a wonderful time and, most importantly, I still remember the name of the band. And all because of such a simple Idea. When Tom did his remix (?) of Elvis' 'A little less conversation', I thought that was great and I was truely proud of him. And now, with his film music, and not the dumbest movies either, in a very difficult world with a lot of competition...., man, that amazes me! The guy of Weekend at Waikiki.... I've had my dreams back then. Tom worked hard to live my dreams. He deserves it! Thank you for the great interview, Rick!

Great interview, and as a huge fan of Blade Runner I have to agree with Junkie. Slight mistake though: James Bernard (Dracula) was born in 1925 and passed away in 2001. In the electronic only film score genre, there's the quite visionary (for its time, 1956) and very avantgarde Forbidden Planet ;-)

I was absolutely floored by this video. Thank you so much for doing it. I had a huge argument with my son because he said that he didn't need to graduate from high school because he had KZbin. I went ballistic but didn't Mr. Holkenborg just validate that in a sense? Thank God he did graduate and maybe because my interests are varied, KZbin stuff finds me... a lot of stuff finds me. Interesting amazing stuff... Honestly, I could go to school on KZbin. Seriously. A friend of mine who's a doctor told me that when she has to do a surgical procedure that she hasn't done in a long time, she finds the procedure on KZbin! Damn... For me it was the last concert Jobim did in Brazil with Jazz artists from America. I think Herbie Hancock and Joe Henderson were there. One of my favorite songs in Life is Girl From Ipanema. Growing Up, it introduced me to Brazilian music. That and Brasil ’66. Anyway during the concert they’re playing an Instrumental Girl From Ipanema and Jobim walks over to Herbie on the piano and plays, the chords to Take the A Train! That was his inspiration for Girl From Ipanema! To me, it was a validation for growing up in the tradition. Watching you guys talk, I felt like I was sitting in the room with you. And Rick, I don’t even know how I got wind of you but I’ve learned a lot already. I’m a couple of years away from retirement. I think I want to follow in the Junkie XL lifestyle. Right now, as soon as I have a vacation, I switch from working from 9-5p to composing from 9p-5a! So now, I have to subscribe to Junkie XL. No Sleep…
