I saw "Tom Jones," a great Oscar winning Best film, a classic. Don't need to see it remade. But, there are still so many great historical novels and other british works that have never been filmed; please do some of those instead of all the remakes! You've even done remakes of your own previous series! I wish Masterpiece would stop with the remakes already, especially when there were already definitive examples and of such high quality. We didn't need another Little Women or Dr. Zhivago. Every remake of a classic that has already been more than adequately done that I've seen on Masterpiece has paled by comparison and been largely forgettable. And then, on the other hand, you give us excellent more modern series like "Home Fires," or "My Mother and Other Strangers," or 'The Amazing Mrs. Pritchard" and end them after only a single season (or two at most) ON A CLIFFHANGER! Ugh. When did brit tv become so demographic and ratings driven like u.s. tv? That's what made so many of us give up on u.s. tv and turn to brit tv in the first place. BTW, I've been watching Masterpiece (Theater) since the very beginning, since "The First Churchills" and "Upstairs, Downstairs."

Am I the only one who dislikes this "color blind" casting. I'd absolutely LOVE to see more stories of people of color in historical settings that goes beyond slavery. But to randomly change the race of someone devoid of historical context or even MENTIONING it, is useless. I love how they did it in Sanditon where she doesn't just happen to be black, her blackness is part of her identity, which is how it should be. If show runners want to add POC to historical shows like Bridgerton, which is basically a fantasy and a farce then great. But if you want me to talk your movie/show seriously then by doing this you're literally shooting yourself in the foot.

@@dorcaskaindu7939why doesn’t anyone do a period drama about Alexander Dumas and how his heroic father inspired his novels? His father was born to a slave, and rose up to be a brilliant military leader in the French Revolution who was one of Napoleon’s main rivals! There are countless stories of unsung non-white heroes and heroines that are perpetually ignored. Oh, this looks different. I don't particularly like sex scenes and nudity, but it's not a deal breaker for me unless it's gratuitous or exploitive. As for the casting, I'm not even British but I know some basic world history and understand that the metropolises of colonial powers were much more multiracial than your typical historical fiction would like you to think. So, there's no problem there as far as I'm concerned. In fact, I'm so sick of this "outrage culture" that has the usual folks coming out with their pitchforks against the so-called ~wOkE AgeNdA~ the moment they see anything that's not 100% heteronormative and white. Regency England wasn't a long time ago. There are very detailed census records of what the population looked like, and it was NOT diverse the way shows like this depict. As recently as the 1960s, well after decolonization began, the UK was still literally more than 99% white.

Attacked? The problem is that it breaks the illusion that the story is set in that time period in that place. If they wanted a "diverse" cast they could have moved the story closer to the present. Europe has always had more diverse ethnicities and skin colours than the whitewashed texts and earlier reproductions would have us know. More diversity is more accurate. People who claim they want more whiteness for the sake of accuracy betray their ignorance or their prejudice.

@@Ronkyort0dox How does it break the illusion? You've had black people living in England going all the way back to the Tudor era. Some were even in the Tudor court. Queen Catherine of Aragon had a black lady in waiting and others were living life as regular citizens of Britain. That's a good 200 years before this movie takes place. And during this time period, you had Dido Belle who was the daughter of an aristocrat and was raised in England by aristocrats and married a white Englishman. So things like this did in fact happen in history. And besides all of that, England was no stranger to black people given that they had their asses all up in Africa and the Americas too during this time. But a black person in England is too unbelievable? Also, 100 years before this in the 1600s, a Queen of France gave birth to a half black daughter and the daughter got her inheritance. Tired of seeing these period dramas that ignore slavery by casting inclusive actors. In those times it would have been unheard to socialize or be seen with someone of color. This isn’t what historically happened the producers just seem the ignore the issue as though slavery never occurred in those times. Its totally wrong because the next generation will see this and think its accurate rather than read in books. You cant pretend that past didn’t happen and just throw in beautiful scenery and costumes like nothing to depict everything was grand which it wasn’t. You look at Roots and North & South that showed the real dark ugliness of humanity. Those miniseries were historically accurate. Slavery was no different than in North America or Europe it was a globally social disease to civilization. Ignoring it here is just tragic.

If you want diversity in a period drama then write original stories but please leave these classics alone
