As someone who lives in Shetland, may I complement Steve on an extraordinarily accurate description of the journey. The bus stop needs to be comfortable - there's only one bus a day according to the timetable! He was lucky to get one hour's sleep in the 'pods' - they are dire!

I love lighthouses and Muckle Flugga is imo the most pretty one in scotland but my most fav one is Bell Rock-just for the history of it from its early beginning until now. A fantastic achievment to build a lighthouse 11 miles out to sea on a rock that only shows itself at low tide.

Dear Steve, thanks for an excellent video. Very nostalgic for us as we lived in Unst 50 years ago. In fact the timber house nearest to the bus shelter was built for us by a Shetland Building Company. No roll on roll off ferries in those days. Small passenger ferry to Yell, two bus journeys across yell and then an even smaller passenger ferry to Unst. Our furniture came up in a British Rail container on the St Clair to Lerwick and then on the Earl of Zetland to Unst. By the time we left for family reasons in 1976 the inter island roll on roll off ferries were running, but we took our furniture back to the Scottish mainland in a Transit Luton van which had to be lifted onto the St. Clair. An interesting feeling watching all your worldly possessions being lifted up, just hoping the slings under the wheels did not break under the strain.
@steve-marsh2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for this comment Julian! Really appreciate it and imagining the van being lifted onto the St Clair!!! So cool that I managed to capture a wee shot of your house :) All the best to you.

Steve, I don't know what scares me more this video or all the ones I watch from Japan. The railway/bus systems are so convoluted. That bus stop was something! Those pastries and the honor system are so sweet. Can I just say that I love the word "anonst"? I'm also a fan of "fratchity". An expression my Scots grandad used for a disagreeable person. Unst sounds very Viking-y

Color me just a tad odd but this happens to be one of my favorite videos. I am one for the journey not so much the destination. I think that's a bit odd because most people have a place they are going to see. And I love, love, love that bus stop! Well worth the trip. I have to admit that these excursions would not be quite so much fun if it were not for your narrations. Shetland is probably one of my favorite shows ever. If the weather on Shetland is as we saw it with you then that's where I need to be. I love that kind of weather. The oil boom in Shetland brought in some improvements to the local infrastructure. An obvious one is that the roads are pretty good. Not so obvious is that they built several indoor swimming pools, so that Shetland must have the highest number of pools per head of the population in the UK. Although it would have been horrendously expensive, I was surprised that they never built bridges or causeways between the Shetland Mainland, Yell and Unst. When I went to that café in Unst shown at 13:57, the lady behind the counter said that visitors in cars often failed to grasp that it was nearly 60 miles (and two ferries) from Lerwick to Baltasound and the journey would take maybe twice as long as they thought.

I did the trip by public transport, and Bobby’s Bust Stop was high on the agenda. Public Transport is the best way to see the islands and the best way to guarantee a spot on the ferries. Not taking the car saves a fortune on the crossing from Aberdeen too. You are spot on about the busses and ferries being in sync, and SO cheap compared to the rest of the UK! I love Unst but I do worry that it’s unique place in the world might change should the spaceport go ahead. I’m glad I’ve seen it before any more development changes it’s character, I found that a single cruise ship visiting can take away the peace and quiet. Keep ‘em coming Steve 👍

Steve, you deserve a medal for continuing to film in such awful weather. Despite everything you persevered and showed us some fascinating parts of the northern isles, the stained glass windows in the Lerwick Town Hall are spectacular.. When I visited your favourite bus stop, it was decorated up to honour Nelson Mandela.

Very interesting, Steve, as usual! I especially enjoyed the Earl of Morton on the glasswork as he wears a beautiful Apron!

The Co ordination of Transport is something to behold and hats off to all the Employees who make it connect and work like a well oiled machine 👍. All you have to is be on time ⏰

Superb! What an adventure. Not being a driver, I've had to use public transport on all my many travels too. Your video shows how even the most remote parts can be reached.

Just catching up after being away for a week! Wow that was quite the trip! I have to say, I love that bus stop, but I agree with Alicja - quite the dedication to get those results! I am always amazed at the variety and convenience of the transportation systems in the UK. I love those bigger ferries. And I really miss the trains...... Can always count on you to mix things up!

Ha! I just watched the other video with the ferry/pod/sleeping in the chairs... and I made a comment that I only know the towns in Shetland from the TV show. So glad you walked around and filmed the house and police station. Oh, and that town hall looked amazing! If I ever finally get there, I shall check it out!

WOW Steve I'm done in just watching that 🤣 So very well done, Looking forward to your ferry review next week. Not the best of weather, considering London was about 30 degrees the same time 😎👍

Haha yes, but I'm a fair Scotsman, so I'll take the cool Shetland air over 30 degree city heat :D

The things you do for us! Always amazed at your faith in so many types of public transport - but it all worked out so well. Love that bus stop, but so remote and the town hall was great. Suspect that filming location was from the Shetland tv series which I've watched. You did so well with such little sleep. Allan.

Incredible! Also, the maps that you show are super helpful and that baked goods chest was precious 🇨🇦
