I have been binge-watching your videos for a week or so now, watching in chronological order (apart from 4 or 5 that scatter gunned watched when I first discovered your channel). As someone that would immigrate to a subtropical island tomorrow if I had the means and money to do so, you don't do a bad job in making freezing Scotland an attractive place to visit. What a fantastic part of the world, Scotland is!

I spent weekends and holidays on Millport growing up as a child until early teens as my Grandma had a holiday home there. We only lived around 45 mins away inland. My 1st visit was when I was 6 weeks old! It's still a beautiful place although I have not been back for around 30 years but my parents still go for a weekend holiday and they are in their 70's. The Ritz Cafe has not changed since I can remember, if you are lucky you can spot 2 full triangles within the pattern on the tables, each table has 2 full triangles. It was always a game to find them! Lovely to see your video with all the "old" haunts.

I spent every summer of my childhood and early teens on Cumbrae, my family had a house in Millport. The ferries would come into the pier in town in those days. I used to cycle around the island every day, sometimes twice a day. Thanks for taking me back to great memories, as I live far away in Australia now.

We were from Cullercoats near Newcastle Upon Tyne and every summer from 1968 onwards we would go to Rothesay for our holidays with Mam and Dad. Your videos have taken me down memory lane, reliving those magical summers on the Isle of Bute. My Mam called it " balm to a troubled soul" and would cry every time we crossed back to Wemyss Bay for our return journey !! We visited Largs and Millport many times, along with Dunoon. My brother and I had our photos taken on the crocodile rock back in 1968!! Lovely to see it's still there. My brother later owned the angling shop in Rothesay for many years. I LOVE the west coast of Scotland and on a FINE DAY there is nowhere i'd rather be! Forever grateful to my parents for taking us there 😀

Every day was a cycle round the island day, we used to leave the house at 9am and our parents would not see us again till the street lights came on. All your videos are really brilliant but the content and teamwork in this particular one was outstanding. At times you both show your very humorous side and when added to the more serious content is most enjoyable. Full of life and energy, both of you and it is a pleasure to watch and see these places that I will never get to see, even when I come to the UK. We did have a terrible wind a few years back, and our outdoor umbrella took off and flew over the house next door, luckily not killing anyone and our BBQ cover flew off and was never seen again. I’m watching today from a sunny and warm spring day here in October 2024 and that looks freezing to me (most Aussies don’t do well in the cold 😂). Thank you very much for these great vlogs!

The ferry doesn’t go straight to Millport because the waters are to shallow and the ferry would get beached. The town isn’t always windy but no doubt in mind that on the island every day there is a windy point on the island. Love Millport and the video Edit: Also in the ritz on the table you have to look for the triangle that isn’t touching any lines. It’s great fun while waiting for you order

The roll on roll off ferry, which now operates, replaced the paddle steamer service from Wemyss Bay and two smaller ferries which used to sail from Largs to the pier in Millport (close to the Ritz). This "roro" service allowed more cars access to the island and of course was much more convenient, but killed many small businesses on the island since stocking up at a supermarket in Largs also became a more convenient and cheaper option. The roro replaced the sail to Millport pier in the 1970's. The paddle steamer Waverly still sails to the pier.

I love visiting Largs if the weather is good. It has family connections for me as my late Mother grew up in the area. Some of my ancestors on her side, are buried in Largs Cemetery. Largs has the Viking connection due to the Battle of Largs, many years ago, when there was a Viking invasion. There is a monument to the battle, known as the Pencil. It was great to watch your visit to Great Cumbrae and Millport. I did the crossing, several years ago. I left the car at Largs and a bus picked us up on Cumbrae and took us to Millport. We've been to Millport three times in the last few years. Hiring a bike from Mapes or On Your Bike and cycling round the island is worth doing. We usually start off with coffee and bacon roll at the Dancing Midge, cycle round to the tea rooms at Fintry Bay for coffee and cake then end up at Round Island Cafe in Millport. The first time we visited I needed a hair cut.. Popped into Marina's for a trim and my wife and I ended up being invited out with Kirstin and her other😮half Stevie for a night in the Legion, along with a a fair chunk of their family for a night of impromptu music. We walked back to where we were staying down the middle of the road which went to prove two things : 1 there isn't a lot of traffic at night in Millport and 2 a single whiskey is larger than in England.

Decided to go to Largs and Millport as I have not been there for a while. The warm weather helped and got a tan!! I managed to get a through fare tto Cumbrae for £14.70 return which is pretty good. My first trip to Glasgow Central in 3 years, I do love the ferries, the only problem was the bus that takes you to Millport was very busy so I took the executive decision to walk to Millport - 3 miles and walked back - 3 miles and then a cold beer in WS. Millport very busy yesterday but that's good. They should a direct service from Largs to Millport with Calmac.

I went Millport every summer for my holidays when I was a wee girl. We’d get the paddle steamer Talisman over from Wemyss Bay and get off at the then main pier which took you into town. My dad played a round of golf every day and then mum would meet him at a pub for some pre lunch drinks. In your video I saw the house we used to stay in then in your video, -it was one of the big 3 story houses on Kames Bay. We went into the Ritz Cafe a lot as kids and teenagers. We used to round behind the Garrison where you’d find Andy’s Snack Bar another teenage hang out! Then we’d go to Mapes to rent a bike or buy a new pail and spade! I remember the crocodile rock and I have photos of my son and I sitting on it when he was 3 and then another photo of him sitting on it by himself when he was 16! He’s 46 now!! I’ve lived in Texas for 53 years now and when I back to Glasgow to visit my family we always go to Millport, we might cycle round the island, stopping at Fintry Bay for a snack in the new place across the street from an old wooden place that had seen better days! We stopped by the thinnest house a took photos. So many many happy memories of our holidays. Then on Largs it was great to see the Art Deco building of Nardinis where I worked as a waitress one summer before I did my nurse’s training at the Victoria Infirmary. All the waiters were Italian and one called Domenico called me ‘strawberry Nose!! That wee kiosk at the outside corner of the restaurant used to sell cigarettes only and there was a young Italian guy who worked there, Bruno and he and I would go on walks at night after work and stop inside one of the shelters on the front facing the sea and do some necking!! Do they even call it that anymore? Anyway you brought back many happy memories of those days, funny how I can remember all that but I can’t remember what happened two minutes ago!! 30:22

The Battle of Largs (more of a skirmish, really) was fought in the thirteenth century between the Norwegians and the Scots. The Norwegians were driven off and this eventually led to the Western Isles becoming part of Scotland. The Norwegians had ruled the Western Isles for centuries (at that time including the Isle of Man off the coast of England), which is why the Piskie diocese is the Diocese of Argyll and the Isles - with two cathedrals, Oban (for Argyll) and Millport (for the Isles - a friend was the cathedral Provost) and Millport is the smallest complete Anglican cathedral in the British Isles). The Garrison was not an army garrison but the residence of the Revenue Officer, who was based there to prevent smuggling. Later, the house was greatly enlarged and became a holiday residence of the Earls of Glasgow, who owned the Isle of Cumbrae.

This brings back memories. A few of us used to spend 3-4 weeks most years working at Hunterston power station a few miles south of Largs. We would stay at Largs. I spent many happy evenings over on the ferry and cycle around the island. You should get there in the summer. The weather is much better.

Thanks again for another post which brings back memories of my 1980's sailings in the "Puffer" VIC 32. We visited Largs and moored alongside overnight in Millport. We cycled around the island on Tour de Cumbrae, on fleet of dilapidated bikes which the skipper had mostly "acquired" from dumps around the Firth of Clyde and the sea lochs which gives some idea of their roadworthiness. We tried to visit Little Cumbrae in the Puffer's sailing dinghy, so well-manned that there were only a few inches of freeboard, though in late May, the sea conditions were a little less choppy than on your visit. We were hailed as we approached the small harbour by a very "tweedy" lady, who informed that the island was private and that we should "Stand orf" which seems to indicate that the natives may not be very friendly. After viewing the lighthouse and "peel tower" like ancient castle, we sailed back to Millport. We had to tack back and forth across the Firth in the adverse winds, and on our voyage encountered the Norwegian bulk carrier "Norland". This was during the Miners Strike, and the port of Hunterston was being used for the import of foreign coal. We nearly got swamped by two high powered tugs which appeared from around the end of the island, and weren't stopping for anyone! One of more eventful sailing experiences! I'm sure that delicious as Largs donuts may be, Alicja will say that they can't compare to a proper Polish paczek!

Cheers Hugh! Despite the less than friendly welcome on the wee island, it just sounds fantastic!

@@steve-marsh apparently there's been a change of ownership since then, and it is now home to the Pantanjali Yog Peeth Trust "a charity which promotes healthy living and well-being in the community". From October 2020 Clyde Charters were due to operate visits.

Oh, my goodness, that wind was awful! I love the ear muffs Alicja wears. They are fantastic and I bet that wearing them reduces those awful headaches the wind causes!!! Fab video! I am still catching up on the earlier videos Steve. Enjoy them all immensely. I’m in Australia and find it fascinating seeing the names of towns in Scotland that the early Scottish settlers brought with them. There is a Largs Beach in South Australia. I don’t think I’ve seen one of your Scottish videos where there isn’t a Scottish town name we haven’t used downunder! Too funny.
