Tom is an award-winning equestrian journalist and author. His work is regularly featured in Western Horseman, Equus and Eclectic Horseman magazines. In this conversation we delve into the lessons he's learned from master horseman, Harry Whitney. The importance of having our horse's mind with us versus just moving them around and more lessons he's learned along the way.

Thank you Molly and Tom, this podcast was so reflective for me. I have spent time at Harry's clinics where I met Tom. Tom has in instant connection with people who have a curious mind about horses, hence we became friends. I hosted a wonderful clinic with Tom at my place in Ontario, Canada a few years back. Both of these "Gentlemen" Horseman are so inspirational to know and be in their presence. I highly recommend reading Tom's series of book as he shares his journey with fellow horse lovers. His writing is 100% authentic and relatable to each and everyone of us who knows there is a better way to be with our friends in the barn, our horses. Thanks again Molly for the Learners Journey podcast.

A challenge for me has been going from an extremely sensitive, intuitive horse to a strong willed character that always checks the boundaries. A big learning curve for the teacher!

Very thought provoking. I loved learning about the “parallel universes”. I’ve been there! Now I can put more thought to what’s going on. I remember in the past thinking to myself that on some trail rides I was lucky things were going okay but it felt fake, not connected. Now I know why!

Oh this interview was encouraging and I can’t wait to red his books. Lots to chew on today and hope to connect with my horses in a new way of thinking. Thankyou Molly

this is one of the best talks so far. I just love the way Tom explains it and Molly you were asking exactly what i was thinking, what does it look like. Brilliant stuff and I agree, it's not about getting bigger with your energy, it's about letting the horse think through the situation. People need to hear this as I see so many trainers use too muc pressure too soon. Thank you for these interviews they are brilliant

Tom is so right - it can be so much harder to unlearn the things that don’t represent how you want to be now, than if you didn’t already have any knowledge and could come to it fresh.

I love the idea of having no rules, but that’s a really hard approach to use if you want to teach people. People tend to learn by following lists and “do this, and then do that”. Teaching the “how to” and also being able to teach the underlying philosophy is a huge challenge.

I agree- having steps to follow is crucial to learning but making rules of what’s the right way and the wrong way can close us off to a lot of possibilities- that’s what I was referring to when I was talking about the rule making 😊

Molly, did you notice that you have a couple odd “troll” comments on this video? Did you want to delete those? I was going to “report” them, but wasn’t sure what the effect of that would be. :)

I did- they show up every time I post a new interview… it only seems to happen right when I upload a new one though- I’ve deleted them 😊
