I don't know who that guy was going on about how Brock doesn't have flashy highlights and can't perform outside the system, but he is so unbelievably wrong. Brock has quite a nice highlight reel already with fantastic splashy plays and he does some of his best ball when the play has already broken down. When i hear people talk like that cat does, i know they haven't watched Brock and are just re spinning the same anti-Brock narrative.

100%! This is the NFL, if it was easy to be a system quarterback with the 49ers then why didn't Brian Hoyer succeed? How about CJ Beathard ? Nick Mullens? Sam Darnold? Trey Lance? Colin Kaepernick? However, if we look at Jimmy Garropolo, who has played the most under Shanahan, we all know his flaws: doesn't like to throw to the edge, doesn't throw deep, can't improvise, gets flustered when outside the pocket, prone to bonehead mistakes. Jimmy G started off strong, but he was treated as a system quarterback, guard rails were thrown up to minimize mistakes and play to his strengths, and the 49ers went far, but not far enough. Brock Purdy is WELL and above all of that, Shanahan has given him the entire playbook, the training wheels are off, and its only time before he transitions from play caller, to NFL field general like Brees, Brady, and Manning. The superbowls will come.
@ddwooten1028
@ddwooten1028 2 ай бұрын
The things that Brock Purdy does well are tangible. Going through progressions quickly and getting rid of the ball quickly are measurable things, especially in this day of advanced statistical analysis. The part of the field he favors throwing the ball is also measurable. His quickness is measurable. He led his quarterback class in the 3 cone drill and shuttle at the Combine and had a 1.54 second 10 yard split in the 40. He owned the intermediate part of the football field (10 to 25 yards past the line of scrimmage) in near-historic fashion. Top in the NFL in attempts, completions, completion percentage, td passes, touchdown-interception ratio, rating, and qbr to that part of the field with more than twice as many attempts as the next closest player. Whereas, he was bottom-10 among starting quarterbacks in pass attempts within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage. Measurable. The issue is he was obviously on a pitch count during the regular season. And because of that, naysayers are determined to believe it was because of his limitations as a player, much like Jimmy was always on a pitch count because of his limitations. That wasn’t the reason; it was because he was returning from a serious elbow injury. Good luck convincing naysayers of that, though.
@dluxx7378

There was no pitch count, your post is the first I'd ever heard of the suggestion.
@ddwooten1028
@ddwooten1028 2 ай бұрын
@@dluxx7378 In the regular season, he went over 32 pass attempts 1 time and never had fewer than 27. Go back and look at his attempts per game. He had roughly 28 a game and rarely hit 30 attempts in a game. I know it’s not cast as a pitch count. But when the attempts are super close to the average every single game with minimal deviation, what is it, if not a pitch count?

@@ddwooten1028 Consistent playcalling? Rather than stretch for some farcical theory that includes two different QB's who are very different players what makes far more sense is that Jimmy and Brock had the same OC calling both their plays and that person has a preference. Seems pretty obvious to me.
@ddwooten1028
@ddwooten1028 2 ай бұрын
@@dluxx7378 He was rehabbing his elbow until well into November according to new reports today. Kyle has a track record of letting quarterbacks he trusts throw it a lot (Kirk Cousins, Matt Ryan for example). And he trusts Brock with the ball. If he’s only throwing it 28 times a game and Kyle trusts him, there has to be a reason he’s 6 or 7 attempts a game below the league average. I speculate it’s because he was mitigating injury risk with a first year starter returning from major injury. That’s where my pitch count hypothesis comes from. But for naysayers like Nick Wright, Brock’s relative lack of attempts speaks poorly of him. That Kyle doesn’t trust him any more than he did Jimmy. And he did not trust Jimmy with more than 28-30 attempts a game. I’m attempting to explain that Brock’s relative lack of pass attempts was not due to lack of confidence on Kyle’s part but due to Brock’s recovery from injury in my opinion. Brock’s attempts went up in the playoffs. Jimmy’s always went down. And I expect Brock to average around 33 - 34 attempts a game. Much closer to the league average.

Pat Mcafee did a segment where he was pretty worked up over what he called "the Brock Purdy SLANDER", and has given Dan Orlofsky endless shit about him saying Mac Jones could play similar in that offense. Richard Sherman has been a staunch Purdy defender as well. Brou, while maybe not as high on Purdy as you or I, has at least attempted to temper Wright's dogshit takes on him. Alex Smith, RG3, Tom Brady (lots of ex-QBs, hmmm...) have said nice things about him. And YES, I am keeping receipts, because this commentary drives me CRAZY. Ryan Clark is by far the worst, saying he's been "pretending" Purdy deserves to be in the conversation about top QBs. Like, WTF does that even mean? He was pretending to have one take when he really has another? What does that say about his journalistic integrity? He's clearly just spewing whatever nonsense is popular to say in the moment. Allen, Jackson, Herbert, all make poor decisions and try to do too much. Brock just does it and if he keeps doing it, you’re gonna have to own up to it. He can’t have the career numbers that QBs who have been in the league longer than he has, so you have to stop comparing him using that as a metric and this idea of potential, in many cases unrealized, is a ridiculous metric. Here's the problem Krueg, you can't simply ask someone who they think the top 10 quarterbacks are, its an impossible question. What ESPN SHOULD have done is ask these experts to quantify the ATTRIBUTES of the best quarterbacks. Develop metrics and scales of those attributes and THEN using those numbers and those concepts ASK those experts to pick their top 10 quarterbacks. This is when you would then eliminate such nonsense like: 'didn't play last year, but we SPECULATE that he will play at a high level once he returns' No offense Aaron Rodgers, but you ain't a top 10 quarterback right now, you have to prove yourself again.

I don't see how he's obviously not top five. I mean, maybe yes, maybe no, but there's an argument to be made. His numbers, his wins, and they eye test all say he's top eight at minimum, and I could argue number five is certainly possible. But after this year, we'll see who's right and who's wrong. That's the fun of playing the games. If he does this year what he did last year, then these arguments will be strictly in the past. By the way, that ranking of Aaron Rogers as #8 is laughable. He didn't even play last year, he's coming off a major injury, he's 40, and the last year he played with Green Bay (22/23) he wasn't very great, either. Far worse statistics and record than Purdy that year, just for instance.

Nick Wright and others like Colin Cowerd misses this point time and time again. I usually mute them when Purdy comes up. Been watching Niners Since 1966. Grew up watching great QB's. But after last year, where EVERY significant metric to measure QBs by was used, he led or was in the in the top 3-5 of a particular stat. Statistically he played better than every other QB last year, including the NFLs "anointed, can't do anything wrong" Mahomes. All this bullshit narrative of boosting Mahomes and Jackson, Jesus Christ Jackson didn't even have MVP numbers last year and still...This is why I pulled away from the NFL and only catch bits and pieces now and again. It's a joke. I watched NFL pundits and media asses come up with every excuse to not include Purdy, even though the same 49er players with a different QB did not put up as good of numbers. 4 players over 1000 yards catching. I say this , a top 5 qb would have read that blitz in the Super Bowl and gotten that 1st down to all but ice the game in the Super Bowl … Again, not to say Brock is bad, but he is not what you think he is. Look no further than the hype with Jimmy G, they had identical stats in the sample size when Cmac came over , and when Jimmy left to the raiders? He stunk it up with a completely diff team.
