I worked at ABC TV at the time and was able to get backstage for this performance. I was standing stage left when Bruce Springsteen came and stood next to me on my right, and then Little Steven came and stood next to Bruce. The 3 of us stood there watching the band rock out, I was blessed.

Man, in the late 70's and early 80's, no one could touch TP and the Heartbreakers. This is so good, it made me cry. Every single guy is a musician I point to when asked about great musicians. There were not just great musicians but this was a great band. Howie was good RIP, but it was never quite the same without Ron Blair. Together these this group of guys were just magic.

Tom was so dedicated to his fans and his music. He showed the true measure of his values and the only musician I know of that told his label hell no I don't want to charge the fans a dollar more than standard for his album. I think that was the "DAMN THE TORPEDOES" album. When people like the eagles started charging a hundred dollars or more for concert tickets again he stood up and said HELL NO and his ticket price was set at fifty dollars maximum. To tell the truth I would not have wanted to be a promoter that tried to cross him on ticket prices. There is a saying us Southern boys use its "don't make me slap the damn taste outta your mouth"..That would've been word up to the promoter that tried him. Now that is a man of principles , don't you wish we had more artists like him. I'll not say who it was but I wanted to catch em live one more time. They were doing a show or two in Atlanta so I called wanting two tickets. The dude at the ticket place said ok that'll be eleven hundred dollars. I'll take your card numbers or you can get em on our website. Don't know how long the shock lasted. I thought back to Tom and the dollar savings and max fifty dollar ticket price. He is was more than Rock n Roll star , so much more.

Of course, the only signatures on my Les Paul are from Tom Petty and Mike Campbell. the best front man and the best guitarist ever. Campbell took great songs and made them perfect.

I love this video, it's so well filmed that you get to see each member of the band doing their thing. And it captures Tom Petty's young, skinny, fiery stage perfectly. This song really percolates, and the ending is just stellar; with Stan Lynch's surprise outro on the congas just when you think the song is over. Just in case a guitar-playing Petty fan scrolls the comments years later for clues? One thing that makes this song great is Petty playing his guitar in open A tuning, which produces some otherwise unexplainably sonic chord tones.

I remember watching this broadcast live on a small B&W tv when I was about 11 years old, and recorded the performances on cassette. Played it over and over for years, and re-lived every second of this amazing performance every time. First time I heard the album version I felt that this live version was 100 times better. The show itself was cheesy, but it was my favorite tv program, and I looked forward to it every Friday night with my trusty Panasonic cassette recorder.

I read Tom's biography, "Petty: A Biography," which I would recommend to anyone even if they didn't like rock n roll. Tom really liked Steve Perrone's drumming and there are a lot of incidents with Tom and Mike getting into screaming arguments with Stan about his playing during recording sessions, but I never heard any problems with it. I think it was more personality, Stan admits he was the wild one of the group.
