I've been to so many Tom Petty concerts that he became so familiar, he was like a friend. He was always so laid back, tapping that right foot to time, wearing jeans and tees. And he was as good in concert as he was recorded. He was nothing short of brillaint. He always spoke unpretentiously to his audience and connected without fail. The Heartbreakers were good and seemingly approachable as Tom seemed to be. And his sense of humor was easy and lacked any sort of hatefulness towards anyone. I don't think he wrote a bad song ever. What a cool guy he was. I absolutely feel like I've lost a friend. What a great loss to all of us who loved Tom Petty. RIP Tom.

I think he was talented, but aside from having a hit song almost every release, a lot of his music was in fact mediocre and boring. He's what the music industry refers to as a "one hit wonder", meaning, there will usually be at least one hit song on every release, every other year or so. The rest of it usually isn't very good. You can immediately recognize the hit songs though, like in this video. I find the first 14 minutes to be boring, but when the song "Breakdown" starts, it's like a breath of fresh air. Then it kinda goes back to mediocrity again.

I seem to remember that at this time there was a "movement" called "new wave". As I recall, the movement was supposed to be about returning to a "stripped-down" and not "over-produced" version of rock'n'roll. It may have been influenced by the punk movement, but the musicians could actually play their instruments. Again, as i recall, the idea was rock had lost its way in art-rock, and production values which couldn't be reproduced in concert. Somehow, the name of that movement, "new wave", was redefined to classify mid-80s bands with electronic keyboard instrumentation, over-sprayed hair, and a mod-ish attitude. Am I the only one who remembers this? Or, did I make it up in my mind? To me, new wave is TP&TH, the Cars, Blondie, the Clash, the Pretenders, Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson, etc. If true, then I love new wave rock'n'roll and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were a premier act. Loved them, loved this. Thought they were the best live show when I saw them in '84. If not, then I will give it up as a fantasy. Love Tom Petty's music. Awesome.

I was an FM radio DJ thru the ‘70s. I GOT FIRED for playing Tom Petty (actually “Fooled Again” from “the “live ‘Leg” EP that came out between the first and second LPs. My Program Director said “I said NO PUNK ROCK” and canned me. In the early days, the industry wasn’t sure how to categorize TP. I basically told him to go f*ck himself on my way out. But I had the number one ratings in the city in my time slot and the General Manager hired me back the next day…So, I walked back in and started my show with “Fooled Again,” that I had been fired fir playing!…LOVED Petty. Sad he’s gone. Ironically, a bandmate of mine ended up one of the Heartbreakers back-up singers for Live Aid and the Plantations Tour…and a bunch of Howie’s basses and guitars ended up in my hands after he passed.👍

I loved their records but live they were exciting and spellbinding and this concert was one of my favorite shows of all the concerts I've seen in my life. Tom Petty had an aura around him which was mesmerizing but he was also down to earth. His performance during Breakdown and Shout was particularly exciting. Every single member of this group did their part to make the complete perfect whole. I am so sorry that I did not get to see Tom and the Heartbreakers during that last tour. The thing about classical is that it IS the way it sounded then. That's the thing about classical composers, they wrote music for other people to play, other people have always played their music. Even if they played it would be one part among many. They usually wrote music for people who where much better at their instruments than the composers were. Anyway, I get what your saying and I agree :)

Don't forget this was before Animal House so Petty was playing Shout before playing Shout was popular. Trendsetter, EpiTOMe of cool.

I remember this ……. First saw these amazing guys in UK Brighton ‘76. My Boyfriend was the keyboard player in The Stranglers, Dave Greenfield. Sadly both he and Tom are now in a great Band in HEAVEN. Nuff said ❤xJ

The Heartbreakers first two albums are some of my all time favorite records; I'm in my 60s now and I still listen to both regularly. Excellent music before they became overly commercial. I like Petty's Mudcrutch stuff also.

Stan was still the best on drums for that vibe .
@jlkbbk20037 жыл бұрын
But even when praise Tom today, Drummers to lead singers and lead guitarists are throwaway musicians and are supposed to keep their mouths shut and just play what they are told. Too many treat them that way.
@highnumber94947 жыл бұрын
Jay Bing Tom and Stan had a love/hate relationship kind of like Sting and Stewart Copeland. I think both songwriters were frustrated by their drummers but realized their drummers were unique instrumentalist/ personalities too. Tough for big egos to deal with.

I liked the petty albums with him more than the last 4-5 or whatever, although each 1 has some great tracks.

Abso-fucking-lutely. Steve is the human metronome, but that’s not necessarily a good thing. Stan was spunky

Remember how Keon Russell x said ya can’t wear sunglasses at night…you have to earn the right? Then in 2014-17 ish time when he won awards and his speech had him putting on the sunglasses…earned and loved…

When you compare him to the punk sound out of NYC (bit drab.. no heart) … a southern man always blows it away.. What a talent huh?
