You seem to suggest that Tom Riddle and Lucius Malfoy were contemporaries at school, but Riddle was some 30 years older than Malfoy, who was a prefect when Severus Snape was Sorted into Slytherin and Lily Evans was Sorted into Gryffindor.

One thing that's always really irritated me about the novels, is how Tom Riddle's personality is laid as a particular archetype: Highly intelligent and ambitious. Charming. Observes carefully and makes moves with precision; always planning ten steps ahead. Always hides motives and emotions. And then....he becomes Voldemort and does a 180 into a gregarious, loud and demanding (rather than quietly cunning), powerful but kinda sloppy and, well, just not composed in his character. It doesn't really make sense to vastly change the personality type and turn a suave, collected, sophisticated spy movie type villain into a disney type villian.
