Billy Cook was my high school science teacher in 1976. A fascinating character. He had to change his name to Willy Cook in the forties because America's first modern "spree killer" was named Billy Cook. Fun fact, both he and Tommy Kelly appeared in a scene in Gone with the Wind, the train yard scene. Both are crying and playing band instruments.

I don't believe Mark Twain wrote Tom Sawyer as a detective but this story is good with Tom and Huck together as constant companions.

Tom Sawyer, Detective is an 1896 novel by Mark Twain. It is a sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876), Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), and Tom Sawyer Abroad (1894). Tom Sawyer attempts to solve a mysterious murder in this burlesque of the immensely popular detective novels of the time. Like Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the story is told using the first-person narrative voice of Huck Finn.

This is the best film adaptation of Mark Twain, by far, I think. The Americana ethos is captured splendidly, and the two young actors are up to the task. For once, Tom and Huck are cast for authentic talent, rather than Shirley Temple cuteness or name recognition. Ironic that a minor Twain story turns out better on film than the masterpieces.
