If he's dying, why does he hope to come back someday, Josh Perrine? If he's dying and he loves her, he should say "I'm dying; find someone else." My thought is that he hopes to come back but does not know if he will. He is not asking her to wait but hopes that she does. It would be a tragedy if she did and he never came back, though. Similarly, it would be a tragedy if she found someone else that she loved less and he did come back.

My understanding is that the song is about a man and a stray dog. Tom leaves a jacket, talks about "somebody else arms", "You can't go with me" etc.
