I think a quote I saw some time that most perfectly encapsulates Tom Waits music was "Music of the Angels sung by the Devil." His grating voice is still somehow so mesmerizing to me.

I just tell people it's the WAY he uses his voice to deliver his narrative. That's what I love about his voice. "Christmas Card..." or "Ruby's Arms" just wouldn't have the same emotional impact (IMO) if it were sung by Sebastian Bach or Geoff Tate, y'know?

I was in high school 1970 yo 74. I think i was the only kid in HS who smoked hash under glass and listened to Tom Waits, Gil Scott Herron, john Mayall and Savoy Brown.

Saw Tom in concert at Hammersmith Odeon in 87 for the Big Time tour. Shame he only played the UK a few more times after. Probably won't see him on these shores again now.

You've introduced me to a very interesting man, writer and composer, and I can't thank you enough. I had heard the name before, but that's about it. I can't wait for your Part 2. I'm about to dive head first into what I believe will be, in the very least, an incredibly interesting musical journey for me, and hopefully, a new favorite. Thanks again, and keep up the good work man.

So crazy to see this channel have 1 video with millions of views, 1 with 50k, and 1 with 20k, and the rest with more modest numbers. It's too bad, because these videos are very interesting, I hope more people come to recognize that. I think a lot of people came from the creepy KZbin fandom.

Tom waits cannot be defined. I think he kind of "sold out" in the beginning of his career by creating this alcoholic persona so that he could later gain the freedom to do whatever he wanted. He is truly a poet and a musical virtuoso, and i love how he changed and got weirder over the years. He's an old soul, the type of person who gets better as he ages
@BigDreamsSmallWalletRC

I'm trying to understand how creating a alcoholic persona EQUALS = Gaining the freedom to do what he wants? can you maybe elaborate on how these two things have anything in common or leads to the other ?
@idontknow-lc8bz
@idontknow-lc8bz 2 жыл бұрын
@@BigDreamsSmallWalletRC hey sorry that was a bit vague. I believe he said in an interview somewhere that when he met his wife she encouraged him to be more of himself rather than the brand the record labels pushed on him.. but because he was a bit older when starting his career i think he maybe did it as a way to get exposure in the first place. Seems to me he struggled with not fitting in with the demands of the music industry at the time (rock & roll hype) so he might have compromised his persona to gain popularity

It's excruciatingly hard to tell when Tom's being tongue-in-cheek from when he's being serious -- particularly when it comes to his private life. I just figure he's always being tongue-in-cheek.

Zevon, Zappa, Waits, and Ian Dury. One or two shows all sharing the stage. Either the best or worst idea ever, but certainly the weirdest. And tickets would FLY.
