My mum died in November and I used to play this for her cos she loved it. She’d sing along to the chorus as best she could. Today is first day I’ve been able to listen to this again and I keep thinking how cool my mum was. At 73 years of age she could still spot a quality tune. This song will always have a special place in heart.

What a cool and inspired mum you had. Am so sorry for your and trust she's resting in a better place singing along with you. Listening to this song for the first time and going through the comments, have realized how much it means to so many people out there. No matter what you are going through, no matter the pain. Keep holding on and believing for a better day tomorrow. I hope with time you will heal, but above all things, may your mums memories remain alive in your life. Keep well

I'll tell you a little miracle 💙 my baby brother died on the 1st April, 💔, and this song is in his Spotify playlist. A week after his passing, my husband and I came home from being out for dinner and we went to turn our garage light off as we were walking inside. The light wouldn't turn off! My husband kept flicking the switch but the light remained on. So my husband took the light bulb out and the light still remained ON! My husband is holding an unscrewed light bulb in his hand and it's lit up, we took a picture of it 🥲 after that happened, I didn't realise until a few days later that this very song, was in my brothers playlist. "I will leave the light on" I truly believe it was him leaving the light on for us and sending signs 💙💙💙

1. One smile, can start a friendship. One word, can end a fight. One look, can save a relationship. One person can change your life. 2. Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened. 3. The tragedy of life is what dies inside a man while he lives. 4. If God shuts a door, stop banging on it. Trust that whatever is behind it is not meant for you. 5. Sometimes, it's not the person you miss, but the feelings and moments you had with them. 6. You can't be wise and in love at the same time. 7. Let it all go. See what stays. 8. A smart person knows what to say. A wise person knows whether or not to say it. 9. There comes a times when you have to choose between turning the page and closing the book. 10. A winner is just a loser who tried one more time. 11. Be thankful for what you have; you'll end up having more. If you don't concentrate on what you don't have, you'll never, ever have enough. 12. The two hardest things to say in life are "Hello" for the first time, and "Goodbye" for the last time. 13. Don't do something permanently stupid just because you are temporarily upset. 14. Let go of what's gone, be grateful for what remains and look forward to what is coming. 15. All men make mistakes, but only wise men learn from their mistakes. 16. I set out to find flawed men and couldn't find any. When i finally peered inside myself though, there was no man more flawed then me. 17. Don't love too soon, trust too quickly, quit too early, expect too high, talk too much. 18. The meaning of life is not simply to exist, to survive, but to move ahead, to go up, to achieve, to conquer. 19. Judge not, that you be not judged. 20. All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord endures forever. 21. Sometimes God's blessings are not what he gives; but in what he takes away. He knows best. Trust him. 22. Alone and lonely are not the same thing. 23. A clever person solves a problem. A wise person avoids it. 24. Anger doesn't solve anything. It builds nothing, but it can destroy everything. 25. Be careful with your words. Once they are said, they can only be forgiven, not forgotten. 26. Most people do not listen with the intent to understand. Most people listen with the intent to reply. 27. A fool shows off to get glory. A wise person stays quiet to find peace. 28. Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all. 29. Use what talents you possess; the woods would be very quiet id no birds sang there except those that sang best. 30. In the end, you tried and you cared and sometimes, that is enough. 31. If you are going through hell, don't stop, keep going. 32. Sometimes God will put a Goliath in your life, for you to find the David within you. 33. I do not get mad. I get distant. 34. Sometimes the right path is not the easiest one. 35. There is no such thing as losing. You either win or you learn. 36. Experience is the hardest kind of teacher. It gives you the test and the lesson afterward. 37. Make peace with your past to it won't screw up the present. 38. What others think of you is none of your business. 39. Time heals almost everything, give it time. 40. Don't compare your life to others and don't judge them. You have no idea what their journey is all about. 41. Stop thinking too much, it's alright not to know the answers, They will come to you when you least expect it. 42. No one is in charge of your happiness, except you. 43. Smile. You don't own all the problems in the world. 44. Fear makes the wolf bigger then he is. 45. Words hurt more than enything else can, because they last, sometimes forever. 46. We all think of the Lord when troubled, never when at peace. But if we held our faith during peace. THere would be no trouble. 47. Don't cry when the sun is gone, because the tears won't let you see the stars. 48. Teachers open the door, but you must enter by yourself. 49. A negative mind will never give you a positive life. 50. Humble enough to know I'm not better then anybody & wise enough to know that i'm different from the rest. 51. Normality is a paved road: it's comfortable to walk, but no flowers walk on it. 52. Worry ends when faith begins. 53. A lack of knowledge create fear. Seeking knowledge creates courage. 54. Don't trust everything you see. Even salt looks like sugar. 55. Laughung is the best medicine, but if you laugh without any reason, you need medicine. 56. The price of being a sheep is boredom. The price of being a wolf is lonelieness. Choose one of the other with great care. 57. You may see me struggle but you will never see me fall. 58. Belive you can and you're halfway there. 59. Think outside the box. 60. A bad attitude is like a flat tire. You can't go anywhere till you change it. 61. The reason people find it so hard to be happy is that they always see the past better then it was, and the present worse than it is. 62. Trust is like an eraser, it gets smaller with each mistake. 63. Don't rush anything. When the time is right, it'll happen. 64. When the past calls, don't answer. It has nothing new to say. 65. Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves. 66. Just because I'm on a different path doesn't mean I'm lost. 67. You never know how strong you are until being strong it the only choice you have. 68. Foolish people seek happiness. The wise grow it under their feet. 69. Sometimes later becomes never. 70. Never trust your tongue when your heart is bitter. 71. Most of the important things have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope. 72. Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle and the life that the candle with not be shortened. Happiness never decreases from being shared. 73. You can't have a better tomorrow is you're still thinking about yesterday. 74. If your ship donesn't come in, swim out to it. 75. What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters caompared to what lies within us. 76. What if you woke up today with only the things you thanked God for yesterday. 77. Let's not compare whose sadness weighs heavier, if we drown we will both sink to the ocean floor. 78. Be careful who you trust, the devil was once an angel. 79. Common sense doesn't come with a degree. 80. A single lie discovered is enough to create doubt in every truth expressed. 81. Affliction comes to use, not to make us sad but sober; not to make us sorry but wise. 82. An apology is the superglue of life. It can repair just about anything. 83. You get in life what you have the courage to ask for. 84. Keep walking through the storm. Your rainbow is waiting on the other side. 85. When a flower doesn't bloom, you fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower. 86. Do not promise when you are happy. 87. When you are angry, do not respond. 88. Do not decide when you are sad. 89. Ask and you shall receive. 90. A hungry wolf is stronger than a satisfied dog. 91. A wise man once said nothing. 92. The hardest things to let go of are the things you never really had. 93. Be strong enough to stand alone, be youself enough to stand apart, but be wise enough to stand together when the time comes. 94. Forget what hurt you, remember what it taught you. 95. Sometimes the most powerful thing you can say is nothing. 96. Just because you think you're worthless deosn't make it true. 97. Don't waste your words on people who deserve your silence. 98. Sometimes the biggest smile contains the most pain. 99. Be smart enough to forgive.

I know this song is about addiction, but this song got me through some dark times where I was suicidal. I was alone and isolated and had nothing to live for, but then I heard this song, completely by chance. It was just a small bit, but I had to hear it again, and so I looked and looked and then I found it, and I listened to it so many times that I got myself the help I needed, because for the first time in a long while, I felt something other than nothingness. I know you’ll never see this, but thank you for this song. For saving me and helping me through my darkest time.

This song brings back so much. I was an alcoholic for 4 years. I was self medicating because I was so alone since leaving home and being cooped up in my apartment for so long everyday all alone. It took me through my grandpa getting sick when I’m sitting by him in his hospital bed he took my hand and told me “When I’m gone, promise me one thing, let me look over the grandson I always knew and loved. Get clean.. Not just for me, but for you. I don’t wanna see you up there before anyone else.” That was it. I took the step and got clean. I interpret the lyrics in the way that no matter what you’re not alone. There’s people in the same situation as you. And even if you get lost down the road, or feel alone or struggle with ANYTHING in life, just like my struggle with Alcohol, there will always be the one place or one person who will always welcome you with open arms. The house up on the hill. Which for me, was Rehab. There will always be somewhere where they will welcome you even if you have made mistakes.. we all do. And if you lose track of what you started, there will always be someone or something that will leave a light on to get you back on track. 🤞🏼☝🏻❤️

Once upon a time I couldn't even entertain the thought of fighting on, but my friends kept me going. Life is tough, and sometimes the road ahead seems impossible. Keep pushing. Even if you feel so very alone, I promise there is something to keep fighting for. You matter. You are important. You rock, and most importantly, you can keep fighting. I'm French and there, in my opinion, we have emotional music as in America but I can tell you that what you do is just in a way too admirable and pleasing. By the way I wanted to tell you thank you, I hope you enjoy doing it, and never give up ! cheers from Paris

As a man who almost literally gave his life to addiction and still struggles with lower forms of addiction this song hit home hard, its amazing how certain songs can pull me out of most forms of stress, depression and anxiety, this makes me think of all the stress and hurt my loved ones went through due to my addictions, to any addicts of any form lean on the ones who care for you, dont suffer in silence, i assure you you are not alone me and millions of other are right here with you 🙏

This song reminds me to always "leave my light on" and help the ones in need. As a fellow musician, you have shown me how raw and emotional music can be, you inspired me a lot man, i thank you for that! When you come to Australia, i'd love to have a beer and a jam. 4 years ago I played this song to my bestfriend who came out of ice addiction and she was struggling bad. I told her to play this song whenever she feels alone because I'll always leave a light on for her no matter what mistakes she makes, because we all lose our way. She was suicidal and in a bad state. She had always been depressed since I met her at the age of 13 and that's why we got along so well- because we were always there for each other. 2 months ago she intentionally drove her car off the road and died. My heart is broken, my light was always on for her and now she's gone. This song means more to me than anything. Rip Billie x

Genuinely from the bottom of my heart im so sorry that this happened to you and im so sorry for everyone this affected drugs and addiction are evil and im so sorry you, her and her friends and family had to deal with that. Its painful losing someone is the most pain you will go through and dealing with something as personal as this is awful. I truly hope both you and her family will feel ok in the future. Know that (and i understand this may sound hollow coming from a stranger on a youtube comment but just hear me out) things will get better for you. They may never be the same but it WILL get better than it is now i promise. And is you yourself are struggling please know that there are people who will love and care for you and listen to you in every part of your life. Even right here if thats what you want. I spent a decade lost in guilt, self loathing and anger. I walked a dark and lonely road watching all those that i knew on that path die one after the other. Throughout my time hiding in the dark, my family and other friends all turned away one after the other except for one. My father was ever that light shining in the distance, and , once i had killed my demons, it was he that opened the door and welcomed me home. Thanks dad for being my house upon the hill.

A few nights ago on the 19th of January 2019, my mother was celebrating her birthday with her friends at a music festival when suddenly she had a 4th degree brain hemorrhage, which from what I've learnt from the doctors means that a blood vessel in her brain burst and started bleeding severely. She then had a seizure, and later at the hospital had another brain hemorrhage. She nearly died, and has been in a coma since that horrible night. It's now the 23rd of January 2019, so it has only been a few nights and there is still a risk of her never waking up or being in a completely vegetative state, but our family and friends and I are praying for her to wake up. When (yes, I am saying when) she wakes up she will obviously have a lot of brain damage, and I am praying that she will overcome the depression and suicidal thoughts that a lot of people with her injuries have experienced. I am praying she remembers me and my sister and her family, and I am praying that the effects of her brain damage are things that can be relearned (such as talking, walking, if she forgets how to do either of those then she can relearn them hopefully), and that her permanent effects will not be too severe. I am 14 years old and my mother has to attend my graduation, my wedding, and one day meet her grand kids, so she can't leave yet and I'm visiting her everyday until she wakes up. I might not be able to visit everyday when school starts, but I will be visiting as often as I can. But anyway, this song reminds me of her. I listened to it over and over after I heard about her condition. My mother was never a drug addict or anything or that sort, in fact she was perfectly healthy and we've speculated that the most likely cause of her brain hemorrhages is because of an accident that happened back in December when she accidentally tripped and hurt her forehead on a stage and never got it checked out at a hospital. But this song still reminds me of her. She is being heavily medicated and drugged to keep her in her unconscious state for the time being so her brain can start to heal, and I talk to her and message her everyday and I want her to know that when she wakes up, I am going to be with her for the rest of her life and I will support her and love her so much everyday. And that when things get rough for her due to her condition, I'll leave a light on for her and help her get through it and love herself. If you are someone who knows somebody going through a hard time, no matter what it is, here is my word of advice on how NOT to comfort them. My friend today messaged me and asked how my mother was doing in hospital. I replied, then my friend proceeded to message something along the lines of "cool okay so how has everything else been going? by the way, I'm selling phone cases for 10 dollars, so let me know what pattern and colour you would like if you want one!!". She did a couple other similar things too these past few days but it isn't really appropriate for me to complain too much on here. Needless to say, she is not my friend anymore. And I don't care if she is just a dumbass 14 year old. If you have a friend who is going through a hard time, do NOT trick them into thinking that you actually give a damn. If you truly care and feel sorry for your friend, please offer your support as they really do need it during their grieving process, and for a long time afterwards. But if you don't give a damn and are going to just pretend that you do for your own personal benefit, fuck off. (I'm rereading this after my most recent edit on the 4th of March, and the friend mentioned here has apologised for the inappropriate ways she reacted that I haven't mentioned here, so I am now on good terms with her, but this still applys) This got off topic, but thank you so much Tom Walker for this masterpiece, it's so touching and I've read a lot of the comments and clearly your song has touched so many other hearts as well as mine. Thank you so much for helping all of us, and to anyone reading this, I wish you and your loved ones good luck for the future, I hope you all stay in good health or your health improves, and I hope your recovery processes are successful. But every now and again you hear words in a song that you hear know matter how much your concentrating on what you are doing. You hear these words as they mean so much to you. So its only now ive sat and listened to the whole song. Im lucky that i made it to the house up on the hill. This song could switch the switch of the people who need it if it was played more. The second someone mentioned you were all alone I could feel the trouble coursing through your veins Now I know, it's got a hold Just a phone call left unanswered had me sparking up These cigarettes won't stop me wondering where you are Don't let go Keep a hold If you look into the distance there's a house upon the hill Guiding like a lighthouse It's a place where you'll be safe to feel our grace Cause we've all made mistakes, if you've lost your way And I will leave a light on I will leave a light on I will leave a light on I will leave a light on Tell me what's been happening What's been on your mind? Lately you've been searching for a darker place to hide That's alright But if you carry on abusing you'll be robbed from us I refuse to lose another friend to drugs Just come home Don't let go If you look into the distance there's a house upon the hill Guiding like a lighthouse It's a place where you'll be safe to feel our grace Cause we've all made mistakes, If you've lost your way I will leave a light on I will leave a light on I will leave a light on I will leave a light on If you look into the distance there's a house upon the hill Guiding like a lighthouse It's a place where you'll be safe to feel our grace And if you've lost your way, if you've lost your way And I know your down and out now but I need you to be brave Hiding from the truth ain't going to make this all okay I feel your pain; if you don't feel our grace then you've lost your way And I will leave a light on I will leave a light on Cause I will leave a light on

I'm sorry for your loss. What you wrote rang a bell, since I remember hearing the same thing many years ago, from a person who lost her best friend this way. Unfortunately, this didn't prevent me from falling into suicidal thoughts myself a few years later. As cold as it may sound, at that point you don't think about the others at all. You can't. You're at such level of mental pain, that the only thing you're able to think about is how to run away from it. You feel it's not a matter of the others. It's just you and the emotional pain. And you don't believe there's another solution, so you don't even bother asking for help. But I appreciate your message. Maybe it'll stop someone at the critical point and make them ask for help. I wish you everything good. Stay strong.

As a mother of a dually diagnosed adult, I'm also a friend, daughter, and sister to so many people who are broken. so many of them have died by overdose or suicide, and basically from a broken heart. When I first heard this song I just sobbed. Each time I hear it, it just hits me so hard, like a punch to the soul. I cannot listen to it in public, because it makes me cry for all the loved ones who are struggling, and for all who didn't make it out. I want to help and support those who have mental health and/or addiction issues, but I learned a very hard lesson which is to accept that this is their journey to figure out, after trying and failing to help them save themselves, those of us who are ride or die for the people we love, often we are rendered powerless to help and the only thing left for us to do is to " leave the light on" because they gave us no other options. IT WAS BY FAR THE MOST PAINFUL THING I HAVE EVER BEEN THROUGH. The Grief is real for both the addicts and their loved ones. This song explains the condition we are in. Please never lose hope and be sure to leave the light on for yourself as well. Some people really don't know how to be okay when their loved ones are not. I learned so much through the years about the process of grief and bouncing back and forth between the stages and I was always stuck on the final step, which is acceptance. You may have to just find a way to hold space for them and love them from a distance when your prayers, pleading, tough love, bargaining and enabling doesn't work... Letting go with love is the only option left... Wounds like these make it hard to trust, it changes you both good and bad, I found it excruciating but I learned to show up for myself and for those who love me especially when they show up and support and lift you up and find a reason to cling to that hope and restore your faith. For those who are still in the nightmare of addiction please face your demons, the light left on for you is the lighted path to the way of recovery. You are worth it and if you don't believe it, look for the signs that your guardian angels have been commissioned by your loved ones to watch over you until you are able to watch over yourselves. Please, just come home. ♥

I'm an addict, addicted to painkillers and I know they'll kill me eventually and at this moment in my life I don't care. I shouldn't be thinking like that but I do. I'm getting help but I feel like it's too late! I guess none of us know what our futures hold. But I wish you the best and the happiness for the future and don't turn to drugs. They make things worse I promise you that. When you're on them it's all fine and dandy but the moment you stop/run out, the demons start to wreak havoc on you. Keep ya chin high and stay strong!

@Mike Eaton Thankyou. That's really kind! I know I want to get sober so bad and I will do it. It's just like this demon attached to me that I can't shake off but I'm getting help but I have to really want it and I do. Sometimes it just feels like an impossibility because I'm imagining the rest of my life without drugs and it's a scary thought but I have to think in the here and now which is what I'm trying to do but it's hard, not impossible but hard. I'll get it done! Thanks again! Hopefully this time next year I'll be looking back wondering what the fuss was about!

@Mike Eaton I realised recently actually that being along means loneliness and for me that makes my depression worse. Painkillers are like a friend, you take them and you feel confident and like you don't need anybody but then that feeling wears away and you realise you truly are alone and it's the scariest and most depressing feeling in the world! I'm trying to reconnect to my family because of my addiction they practically disowned me and I don't blame them. I was a nightmare! I'm talking to old friends now and there's no better feeling! I need to learn to stop living in the past and realise I have a future and probably a good one too! Thanks for your kind words! Have you got an email it's always good to connect with people! Just lost my father to drug addiction, and suddenly I'm able to see all the signs that I missed, and wish I had caught. Suddenly that extra win in Fortnite seems so disgusting. Those extra hours working up on the roof in the blistering heat to pay for my house, car and food don't seem important. Getting accepted in university no longer feels amazing. All the work I've put in for the last year seems so pointless, because I could've put it towards saving him if I had just opened my fucking eyes. And this song is just so beautiful. I have issues with expressing my emotions, and this song really helps me to just lean back for a minute and just cry, or whatever I need to do. Thank you Tom, great song.

harleymccoy123, hearing this story made my soul cry tears of anguish. I'm begging you, don't do anything to hurt yourself. And try your best not to dwell in your past and dark thoughts. If you swim in those dark waters for too long, your beautiful soul will drown in dispair, anger, ect. etera. I know that you are far more then strong enough to fight these emotions. The sadness about your father will remain no matter what, but sometimes a little sadness can be a good thing in life. Just remember that he will always be with you, watching over. He would want you to stay strong, and not slowly get devoured by the darkness lurking in the shadows. You are perfectly perfect in every way, just remember that, but we all have those moments. And don't forget that you can talk to someone close to you about what your feeling and learn to fight the darkness and see the importance of never giving up. May your father rest in peace. ☺🙏😢

It's 2023 and this song will always play in mind. I'm a recovering addict been clean and sober since 2005. When I feel like I'm having one of those days and I feel like giving up I play this song and it gives me the momentum to push forward and not use, but to get through 1 day at a time and never overwhelming myself

Well done. You've done amazingly so far; you've got this, even on days you doubt yourself, you've got this. Don't be alone if you need to ask for support x

The girl I was dating told me yesterday she could not continue with our relationship because her previous relationship from 5 months ago still left scars on her. I tried everything. I called her, heard her cry, hugged her, even asked if I should come home to her, but in vain. Moral of the story. One bad relationship can ruin 100 future relationships. Stay safe out there, and even how much you wish to help your partner or significant other, sometimes you just need to let them be alone if that makes him/ her happy.

As a person struggling with my mental health, this song helped me in a huge way. Never forget even if you cant love yourself, there are people who do. They're the ones who leave their light on for you 💜💜💜
