Holy crap, this Ottawa announcer doesn't have a clue what he's talking about. Why does he have a job, exactly? "A head shot is the issue here." No, buddy try again. Maybe he just needs to see the replay. "Head contact, no question about it." Okay...maybe he needs to see another angle? "There's no doubt that's contact to the head." Okay, I guess he's a blind color commentator. Seriously, I cannot believe this was anything more than a 2 minute interference penalty. The primary point of contact was the shoulder blade. There was absolutely no contact with the head. Hell, the only reason Lazar even fell was because he got sandwiched between Wilson and Orlov. This is far and away the most disgusting call I've seen in an NHL game in at least the last 5 years. Nearly cost the Caps the game, too.

+Alpha Tango Foxtrot ?? 1:36 / 1:37- there was contact with head...
@travisteevens25358 жыл бұрын
First of all, calm down. There 100% is contact to his head. Did he say principle point of contact? No. Second, "Nearly cost the Caps the game..." Oh no!!!! Can't lose a game, how about, "possibly reaggravated a concussion." Have some decency...Wilson was being a goon all game and this hit was very borderline.
@shawakwak8 жыл бұрын
+Alpha Tango Foxtrot Not true. You can see from ice level view primary contact is head. Also Lazar's head is the first thing to move on the hit. That's just physics. His head was hit first. Whether it's fair cause Lazar crouching, I don't know, but most certainly head contact first. That's not in dispute here.
@Irishnapalm23418 жыл бұрын
+Alpha Tango Foxtrot This wasn't even a 2 minute interference penalty. No contact to the head and no interference, this was a reputation call combined with a "Player injured" call. And no im not a Caps fan, im a bruins fan, go look at my history if you don't believe me :P

Lazar said it himself today that his head kinda snapped because of the impact to the SHOULDER. So Wilson did not hit Lazar's head.

Isn't it sad that these Canadian announcers, who grew up living the game, would think that was penalty. What a bunch of homers. Back check, tracking puck, hip to hip. Don't you just love how they say as an aside that Lazar was bent down. That is Lazar's fault.

Ottawa should get get two penalties 1) On Borowieski third man in 2) On Neil instigator which then also includes a 5 minute major for fighting and an automatic 10 minute misconduct. Bad call this is turning into the damn NFL like what's a catch? What isn't a catch? What's a clean hit? What isn't a clean hit that allows for the opposition team to jump the player who is getting the penalty called on?

+Justin Kruse cri more
@Irishnapalm23418 жыл бұрын
+MaddRezz I actually agree with Kruse, im not a fan of either team and yet I think Wilson got screwed on this call. That was a clean hit but because the player getting hit apparently got hurt they called a penalty. I wonder if this was more a move by the referees to remove Wilson from the game to keep it under control. But by that logic they should have evened out the Penalties because Neil should have gotten ejected to. Its hard to make a call like that as a referee, I understand that, but with the video angles available to Toronto, I highly doubt Wilson will face supplementary action. Furthermore I really wish the NHL would allow for video review of these plays, like a coach's challenge, unfortunately that would slow the game down and it would take the power to remove players from the game away from the refs who tend to use it to calm the game down.
@mcnasty35978 жыл бұрын
Initial contact is Lazars shoulder... Go to 1:20... and use this nifty tool youtube has kindly provided us to slow down the speed of the video to 1/4 speed. Lazars head whips back to the right and makes contact with wilsons shoulder because of how bent over he is.

@Linleass8 жыл бұрын
It was a Match Penalty not a Game Misconduct which in this case is a significant distinction. Tom Wilson is 6'4" and Curtis Lazar is 6'0" and he bent over. Is Tom Wilson supposed to stop hitting people because they are shorter than him? It was intended to be shoulder to shoulder (it pretty much was...if Lazar didn't bend over or was a couple inches taller it would have been), his skates and stick on the ice, and his elbows were in. He did not hit him all that hard. He even got a piece of the puck. If his intent was to injure someone would he even worry about touching the puck? I don't think so. Complete BS.

The league is so immature. This is a clean god damn hit. Just because his name is Tom Wilson doesn't mean every time he hits a guy he's trying to kill him. Lazar was looking at his own player instead of looking at the other teams players like he should. His fault he got steam rolled by a 6'4" 220lb locomotive.

I watch nearly any Hockey game thats on these days with the NHL ticket and I have yet to see any team get more wrongfully charged penalties than the Capitals. Didn't they get kicked out of the playoff last year for TWO wrongfully called off goals and TWO wrongfully charged penalties that turned into PP goals for the Rangers? WTF does the NHL have against this team and its players? Yes, Wilson is a boarderline player... but 98% of the time his hits are clean, just brain rattling hard lol.

Wilson's penalty was rescinded after the game. Even the NHL thought the call was bullshit.
@September20048 жыл бұрын
Match penalty has apparently been rescinded. There was a bit of head contact but it was mostly the shoulder that was contact. I think at most it's an interference call since it didn't look like the guy actually had contact with the puck (it bounced over his stick). That's my interpretation anyway.
@hocke46078 жыл бұрын

Thank goodness this game misconduct was rescinded. Referees target Tom Wilson. That's absurd...
@Irishnapalm23418 жыл бұрын
That call is the result of a reputation that Wilson has built for himself. Just like Marchand and Rinaldo on the Bruins will never get the benefit of the doubt, Wilson will also never get the benefit of the doubt. Wilson's hit here is 100% clean. No head contact, no blindside. the only reason this became a penalty was because the player fell down and looked to be hurt. I remember a few years ago when James Neal kneed Brad Marchand in the head and the refs on the ice only gave him 2 minutes for kneeing, after the fact the NHL handed down a 5 game suspension but the reason Neal didn't get a match penalty at the time was because it was against Marchand.

Seems like a soft call. Maybe there was some head contact, and it was from the blind side, but it definitely looks like principal point of contact is through the body. Maybe a 2 minute minor but not a 5 and game.
@LeJonatron8 жыл бұрын
Other then being a fan of hockey I am impartial in this, but that is technically illegal as of NHL rules. Rule 48. Blindside hits. NHL rewrote the rule last year taking out the "targetting of the head" part of it.

That's simply a hockey play., shoulder to shoulder, on a guy who wasn't paying attention. Since he wasn't paying attention Lazar's head snapped back as result of the hit but it wasn't a hit to the head. Certainly not a game misconduct. If anybody deserves a misconduct penalty its Neil. He came off the bench and didn't even attempt to make a play on the puck then was the 3rd man into the scrum in the corner. This was simply a reputation call. If anybody other than Tom Wilson was involved it wouldn't even have been a minor. This was a BS call in my book. The ref who was right on top of the play didn't even make the call, it was the trailing referee who made the call.
@birdbon3s8 жыл бұрын
poor Wilson. terrible call. I think they call head contact because of the whiplash of Lazar being hit, but there's no head contact.
@Linleass8 жыл бұрын
So, on top of this match penalty being rescinded, last week his game misconduct penalty for the hit on Campbell was also rescinded. The NHL better do something about these refs throwing him out of games, since they obviously they obviously aren't agreeing with the calls the refs are making. These rescinded calls should be proof enough he's getting penalized for his "reputation."
@devoncuddihey86978 жыл бұрын
Okay, lazar is a tough kid and doesn't fall that easily. Second, if bending down and sniping someone in the head isn't a penalty, then gryba, and height advantages, shouldn't count when players "don't defend themselves" on interference plays away from the puck; While absolutely crushing them with a huge hit, shouldn't be called either
@chris144738 жыл бұрын
The league reversed the call the withdraw the match penalty. No automatic suspension. Good reaction by the league.
@keechy15518 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, this hit is kinda questionable. Wilson is a big dude and Lazar was bent over. I think Wilson should have played the puck instead of the player because of the Lazar and Wilson were positioned at the time of the hit. I understand the penalty, Wilson has a ton of questionable hits to his résumé.
