So funny, lived here in Bklyn (Manhattan Beach, 5 min away from Gravesend) essentially my whole life, and just "discovered" Gravesend. Just two days ago I detoured through there to pass by the cemetary and saw Lady Moodys house.

Another fascinating video, Tom. I used to live in the English Gravesend, on the banks of the Thames. My father worked on the dredgers and would often bring me back cannon balls he'd pulled up from the river bed. I think I prefer the look of the Brooklyn version!

Love your vids Tom, was meant to come to New York last week but as we were on the plane the pilot cancelled the flight with snow & ice issues, anyways we are coming in Feb all the way from Liverpool UK, really looking forward to it. Strange fact for you, years ago I worked in Gravesend in England and when walking around looking at the history found out that Pocahontas. is buried there.

Quick correction: sufganiyot (the Jewish jelly donuts popular as Hanukkah treats, as are latkes) were originally brought to Israel by Polish Jews, who were Ashkenazi. The Hebrew word sufganiyot was adopted for them in Israel, so people - including lots of Jewish people - assume they’re originally Sephardic; but it’s not so. A similar treat originally enjoyed by Sephardim, although they’re not jelly-filled, is bimuelos. Another donut-type treat enjoyed by Moroccan Jews is called sfenj.

Thank you for your great work/ videos...👍 Yes, earlier the same Avenue U was a Russian-speaking area, then after a few years it also became Chinese, like other places in Brooklyn, Manhattan, including various Italian areas became Chinese, the same Brighton Beach was mainly a place for Russian -speaking Jews, also Russian-speaking, Ukrainian-speaking Slavs, Georgian-speaking people from Georgia, place from the former Soviet republics, now others with other ethnic people dominate there and so on. I myself am also a witness to all these changes during my time living in New York City...
@MikeP205513 күн бұрын
I recently watched another geography/history 'Tuber's video about Brooklyn from his series, "The Map of Such-and-Such" (something to that effect). The origin of that literal square on the map is fascinating. But yours is the superior channel, hands down. He wasn't out there freezing is bollocks off, and I didn't learn shit about Sephardic Jews, nor did he serande me with Styx. Twice! 🏅 TOM! TOM! TOM! TOM! 🏅
