Very informative. I had a cousin who grew up in Greenwich Village & the only thing she showed me was the coffee & tea co., where 2 play chess where 2 get hand made leather bags @ the village tannery & where 2 buy shoes I had no idea the village had such secrets, including the burial ground. WOW!

Hi Tom. I haven't seen your videos for a while. This is a nice video for Halloween. It's a lot better than those gory slasher they show in the movies these days that leave nothing to the iimagination. I saw some videos of Canatsie who my friend from Brooklyn used to live. He moved to South Florida,. That's now a pretty bad area for drugs and crime.

This was very interesting and fun. I'm from the East Village and was often in the West Village, too. I worked for NYU Law School in a building Edgar Allen Poe lived in. I haven't heard the story about the women and their families talking loudly from the Women's Prison windows since my Mom told me about it when I was a little boy. Well, now I'm going to watch your East Village Walking Tour and see if you remind me of Jeff Goldblum in that one, too.

In 1987, I use to listen to the Howard Stern show religiously. I was 13. Every day, the case of Little Lisa Steinberg was in the news and Howard & the gang would talk about it. Wasn't she tied to a radiator at one point? Anyway, for 20 years, that's how I kept up with current events by Robin reading the Post & the Daily News over the radio. Baby M and R Budd Dwyer were two other stories from around that time I remember!

The first two stories (at least) are well-known history. I lived a few hundred feet from where each of them took place. As a graduate student in 1976-77, I lived at 35 Fifth Avenue (Fifth Avenue at Tenth Street). During that period, one of Greenwich Village's great bookstores also burned down: Eli Wilentz's 8th Street Bookstore, across the street from Electric Lady Studios.

You mentioned Mae West in this video. Fun fact: I grew up in northern NJ and the house my parents bought was very old. They've lived in that house since 1978. It was over 100 years old when they bought it. There was (and still is) a path that goes from the back of the yard to the center of the yard and just stops. Over the years, they've collected many stories about the house. One of them is that an Italian family lived there and the lady of the house made these MASSIVE dinners on Sundays. She was an amazing cook. Word got around and people who worked on Broadway would come to these dinners and literally sing for their supper. They sang in a gazebo that used to be at the end of that pathway that dead ends in the middle of the yard. We were told Mae West was one of the people who ate in our yard.
