Thank you very much for the comparison between these both cameras in terms of wild life photography. Concerning the autofocus issue of 90d (lost the Focus of bird) I want to comment that from technical point of view many Canon cameras like 1dxmii, 7dmii, 80d, 90d,... are using one and the same parameters in order to configure the autofocus performance. These parameters are so called "Tracking sensitivity", "Accel./Decel tracking" and "AF pt Auto switching". The SW algo using these parameters as input is in every camera the same, I guess. Only the hardware is different. As far as I know the autofocus HW module for the optical view finder of 90d is a new development derived from the one of 1dxmii. Thus, I wonder why the performance of 90d in terms of tracking birds shall be worse than 7dmii. For sure the 7dmii as well as the 1dxmii are capable to offer pre-configured autofocus settings in its menu so called case1...case6. Which allows to access different focus situations very quickly. But these pre-configurations do only use the three parameters mentioned above in different combinations. Thus, I recommend to configure the 90d in the same way as the 7dmii in order to compare the bird tracking capability. When I have a look to the pre-configurations, I would prefer to use case 2 for bird photography. The parameters are set as follows: "Tracking sensitivity = -1", "Accel./Decel tracking = 0" and "AF pt Auto switching = 0". I assume the Tracking sensitivity value is in this case the root cause for losing the focus in the 90d. Thus I recommend to change this value to minus one in the 90d CFn.II autofocus menu. Whereby “-1” means that the focus remains longer on the motif and doesn’t change to other items appearing in the image behind or in front of the original motif.

Autofocus tracking sensitivity IS AVAILABLE on the 90D.. just not as a separate menu item but you can register the individual tracking items in the MY Menu. Also: Autofocus tracking for BIF is made better by disabling the Face and ITR (also in the setup menus). You didnt' mention any of this in your review.

Also annoying she said the 7D mkii wins for auto focus points because it beats the cross type viewfinder by 20 points, yet says nothing about the 5481 points available in live view along with the WAY more advanced iTR AF it has. You can customize the AF insanely on this camera, just doesn't have a designated page to do it. Everything's in the custom modes menu. I dunno, I appreciate reviews to get opinions of real world issues and comparisons but blindly reading off basic spec info from Best Buy's web page doesn't cut it.

A year ago I got a Canon 100-400 zoom and I almost bought a 90D as a second body for it (I already had an 80D). I came across this video and saw that the 7Dii autofocus was much better than 80/90D, so I bought a new 7Dii and grip instead at a very good price. I confirm that this video is spot on, the 7Dii blows the 80D into the weeds on quickly changing autofocus for birds. I also find the 7Dii much better in other ways; faster, quieter, better sealed, better exposition with and without flash, and the CF card is way faster copying off onto a PC than an SD card. Thanks again for the excellent advice!

90D *Autofocus Adjustment Functions* are in the Custom Functions :) regarding 4:22 Custom Functions II: Autofocus. *Tracking Sensitivity* (C.Fn II-1): Related to the AI Servo AF mode; this setting controls how much the autofocus system reacts when an object other than your subject enters the focusing area or when your subject strays from the focusing points. Accel./Decel. Tracking (C.Fn II-2): This one is also related to AI Servo AF mode; the default setting is designed for subjects moving at a fixed speed. The other settings are geared to subjects that are moving erratically. AF Point Auto Switching (C.Fn II-3): This sets the AF point switching sensitivity when tracking moving objects. In other words, you can control how responsive the system is when it needs to switch AF points. AI Servo 1st Image Priority (C.Fn II-4): When you use one of the Continuous Drive modes and AI Servo AF mode, this setting determines whether the camera takes the first shot as soon as the shutter button is pressed, even if focus is not yet achieved. You can tell the camera to wait for focusing to occur (choose the Focus Priority setting) or to go ahead and take the shot (choose Release Priority). The default, Equal Priority, tries to achieve a balance between the two. AI Servo 2nd Image Priority (C.Fn II-5): This function controls what happens for shots taken after the first shot when you’re using Continuous shooting and AI Servo AF mode. Choose Shooting Speed Priority to make achieving the maximum frames per second rate the priority; choose Focus Priority to restrict the camera to taking the shot after focus is achieved. The default setting gives equal priority to both concerns. Select AF Area Selection Mode (C.Fn II-7): By default, the 90D rotates through all five AF Area Selection Modes when you press the AF Area Selection Mode button when using the viewfinder. You can customize this by removing those you don’t want to see from this rotation. The only exeption (you knew there was going to be one!) is Manual Selection: 1-Point AF. It stays, whether you want to see it or not. Limit AF Methods (C.Fn II-8): Like the previous function, this setting limits the AF methods you can use, only when you are shooting in Live View. Orientation Linked AF Point (C.Fn II-10): Normally, the AF Area mode you select, as well as the AF point or zone you choose, remain in effect whether you orient the camera horizontally or vertically. If you change this setting to Select Separate AF Points, the camera remembers the settings you choose while holding the camera horizontally, vertically with the grip on top, and vertically with the grip on the bottom. Then when you rotate the camera, it automatically shifts to those settings. *Initial Servo AF* (C.Fn II-11): This option controls which AF point the AI Servo AF or Servo AF uses when the AF Area Selection mode is set to Automatic Selection AF for the viewfinder or the AF Method is set to Face+Tracking in Live View. By default, the system selects whichever AF point it thinks is best. However, you can change this behavior and pre-select an AF point to start on, whether preset or the last one you used. AF Point Selection Movement (C.Fn II-13): By default, when you’re selecting an autofocus point, you hit a wall when you reach the edge of the grid of autofocus points. If you change this menu option to Continuous, the selection instead wraps around the viewfinder by jumping to the point on the opposite side. This function applies to viewfinder shooting only.

Some corrections out of my experience: 1. the 90D does have a comprehensive autofucus menu, with all of the options she claimed were missing and more! 2. The tracking of the optical view in the 90D is superior to the live view's one, at least for wildlife photography, as it's faster 3.the high pixels density of the 90D requires the use of high revolving lenses (100-400 ii is a great choice) and higher than usual shutter speed- once these two are utilized the result would be far superior to the 7d ii I appreciate the time spent on making this video and do consider it's release date which was close to the 90D release but the 90D is a far superior camera to the 7D mark ii, not even mentioning its video capabilities which are fantastic!

Hi Malinois, that really depends on what you want to be photographing. the 70-200mm will mostly come short when you want to shoot birds or wildlife... the 100-400mm or the 150-600mm will be better suited for that... However, if you mostly shoot in low light conditions with closer subjects the 70-200 F2.8 is brilliant and one of the sharpest lenses I know - cheers Janine

Very fair review - so difficult to compare what are virtually home computers for photography in 5 points and I have no problem with the conclusions. I would like to add however, that in addition to 4k video, blue-tooth compatibility and various other modern additions, the 90D includes focus bracketing software. For quality images I tend to use my 5D mIV (wonderful camera) but I got the 90 D for versatility and reduced weight in the field. The focus bracketing works with my Canon macro lens, my 100-400mm and the 24-105 mm lenses. So focus bracketing can have the widest possible application.

Thank you for your info. As a 7DII user since it came out many years ago, I was curious how the 90D would compare. Given that I rented one and shot with it Feb 5 - 12th in Sanibel, Florida. I agree with virtually all your thoughts. Some add'l insights are: * 90D doesn't have a dual back button focus. Dual Back Button is important to me depending on BIF or still shot * 90D with 1.4TC and 100-400 II Image quality outperformed the 7DII with the same lens configuration * 90D AF initially for BIF in Flight was "very bad". After making multiple AF adjustments the AF system went from "very bad" to almost good enough In conclusion, for me, if there was a 7DIII with flip screen, Touch screen, Dual Back Button, 32MB sensor, and most of all equal or better than 7D II AF system I would consider buying. But for now, I can't justify the 90D

The 90D is much harder to customize than any of the higher end bodies so much so that one is less likely to do it, especially in the field. How easy something is to do in the menu is a big deal, which is the reason I avoid Sony cameras.
@RogerZoul4 жыл бұрын
G L - given that the 90D is missing AF options like 4 and 8-point expansion, and no easy way to change between AF modes on the fly, during action, the 90D is just not equipped to do what the 7D2, and all higher end Canon bodies, do. It is not just a matter of tracking since once you lose the subject, it is unlikely that you will get it back if it is a fast moving bird or other animal. That is why the higher end bodies have those additional feature which are not in the 90D. It is meant for a different type of shooter, and it’s price reflects this.

My wife has the 760D and this is too small for me -I have no idea how I'd manage with a small mirrorless, especially with a 400 / 500mm lens - the 760D is ok with 400 but to small for 500. Mirrorless battery life is also a concern for me and the real viewfinder is great - tried EVF for 2 days and din't get a feel for it. However you have a more "pro" viewpoint and it's clear the 7D has big advantages, the weight is the only issue. I'm rarely above iso 1600, but the 80D is ok up to 3600, above is never so nice. A great review which got me listenning and thinking - more please - the best out there!

Hi there, Nice review however i have a small remark. 😊 You are off in the comparison in regards to the AF. The 90D’s AF is way better. It’s true in the 7DM2 is a separate AF menu. But each and every setting can be made also in the 90D. There is no menu with cases. But one can create easy a customised AF menu in the green section with exact the same as in the 7DMII. The technical details of the AF for the 90D are way better😏 btw i own both bodies.

Thank you, great review ! I have been looking at the 90 D but its less rugged body is my main reason to hesitate. The better noise level at 6400 ISO is a definite plus and also the flip out screen, I think Canons main reason for not incorporate it in its "single figure models" is that its much easiier to break or damage that compared to the solid screens. I have the 70 D since many years, think I bought it 2013 when my old 7D mk 1 broke down and its ok but then when 7D mk2 came out that was soo much better, I still use that mostly for wildlife/ nature photography in northern Sweden ´(Lapland). That great noise at 6400 Iso is my reason to still consider 90 D seriously. so thanks for showing that so clear. Still hoping for a 7D MK 3... Bo Nilsson Sweden

Hi Bo, thanks so much for watching my video. The new Canon announcement has been very exciting. We will see a replacement for the 7Dmkiii but definitely not a DSLR anymore. We were supposed to test the new gear now in April, however, in the current situations it has sadly been postponed. Despite my reluctance with mirrorless I believe the lenses are absolutely outstanding and the image quality often improved due to the shorter distance between the lens mount and the sensor. Excited for the new stuff!!!... Stay safe

great video.. well presented from a super knowledgeable pro photographer--well done and thanx.. I had the 7dMkII for a short time a few years ago.. battery issues were horrendous even with GPS shut down--only about 300+ shots.. as there is a slim to no chance of a new 7dMkIII coming out with Canon basically 'giving up' on DSLR's.. hopefully a rumored R7 mirrorless version will show up soon from Canon

Great video. I used to shoot with the 7Dii but felt really restricted by the limitations on using high ISO. I didn't like pushing the 7Dii above ISO1000. It was for that reason I actually moved to the 5Div which as a full frame gives me a much better ISO performance and I don't feel I have lost the reach from the cropped sensor.

I recently picked up a 7D Mark ii and it is a solid performer. If you don't think you will need the flip out screen or are not pining for 4K video then it is a strong performer. I think it will feel much more robust and flexible and a much better performer for sports and wildlife than the T5i.
@machia07053 жыл бұрын
My T5i is a real workhorse. Been shooting with it since 2015. Of course there are better cameras but the lenses are the heart of the image as much as a persons eye. I think I’m going to purchase the 90D. Enough of an upgrade for me.
@BrianLamb-rocketmanblamb3 жыл бұрын
@@machia0705 I ended up getting a 90D also. I think the 7D Mark II is still a great camera for this kind of wildlife or sport photography usage. However I too had been used to a T3i and so the flip out screen and eventually my desire for 4K became a motivation. If going mirrorless is still a ways off and you've invested in EF(-S) lenses then yes I think the 90D might be the one.

What a super comparison video, straight to the point on both cameras and makes me happy I bought the 7D Mark II. I also like knowing the 7D has built in GPS, Intervalometer, and decent enough ISO performance. Yet the 90D sounds strong in many other areas, especially the flip screen ( had one on my Canon G3 a century ago ) and they are very nice for composition. Hard to decide best.

I like the 7d very much. I would like to move up from my current 760d. What I would really like is to have an option of no video bodies! I’m only ever going to take stills so why should I have a video option. If you want to use the video then why not just use a video camera? Would it make the camera any lighter, don’t think so! Can you use a 2x converter on a 100-400 lens? Love the review thank you. Graham🇬🇧📷📸
@janine-pangolinphotohost97224 жыл бұрын
Hi Graham, thanks so much... in your case I don't think the video is any disadvantage here. It is not far developed on the 7Dmkii anyway. It also wouldn't change the weight of your camera as it makes use of the existing hardware. If you use the 2x converter you are going to be restricted with your focusing options.... but it is possible

great review, thanks for sharing! and that beautiful location!! As a 80D owner, and someone who isnt a fan of the 7D series (mostly because of its bulk), I think i keep trying to find reviews that really show the AF performance from both 7DII and 90D (as someone mentioned, the AF setting can be fine tuned in the menu of 80/90D). Even if the 7Dii was a more manageable size, I'd have a tough time giving up the newer technologies and updates that the 90D has (sensor, flip screen, wifi!, video) at the same price point. As I'm sure there's a lot of other photographers in the same boat, maybe as a followup video, it'd be nice if you could fine tune the settings the best you can for the 90D (specifically for bird photography) and share results. Thanks again for sharing!!

Hi Andrew, thanks so much for the feedback. I will definitely consider this. Unfortunately there is no option to rent camera gear in Botswana but I will see what I can do when I get down South again soon. However, if you do shoot birds in flight the 90D is not going to be fast enough. Maybe wait until the Photokina (may) this year and see what Canon might come out with. A 7Diii is long overdue and I think there might be interesting options coming up that will be fitting into future development of cameras and your range of interest.

I guess that she just didn't know the correct place in the menu for those settings in 90D. Strange thing with Canon is that in different models same settings can be located in totally different menu location. I upgraded my 80D to 90D, and even between those two models some settings have been relocated. Very confusing. Took some time to find the setting to enable AF-overdrive for my STM lenses. For a moment I thought that my 90D was broken / had FW bug. 7D Mk II has more focusing points, no question about it. But also 90D seems to work quite nicely when focusing on targets. Specially AF in LiveView is like a dream. Big step forward vs 80D I say. All in all, these photo tutorial videos from pangolin are cute, me like a lot!

HI Steve, thanks so much for watching my review. Yes the 7Dii was the first camera to adopt the amazing 1Dxi focusing system and it really hit the spot. But one needs optimal light conditions to shoot with it... depending where you take pictures that can either work or become very difficult.
@cooloox4 жыл бұрын
@Steve Glennan If the 90D AF was setup properly (there's 16 AF custom functions which dramatically change AF performance and they weren't even given a mention) and the user was more familiar with it, the difference between the cameras would be significantly less. As a person who used to shoot weddings, portraits and model portfolio work (i.e. Not a bird or wildlife photographer) I shoot birds in flight for AF practice. On a lowly 80D I rarely miss a shot. The demonstration in this video does not represent the 90D used by a person who knows the camera, how it behaves and how to set it up.

Thanks for the review. Well done. Very well grounded in practical, real-world use considerations. You identify, better than others, an issue with the 90D’s focus servo abilities that others have also mentioned. For me, wanting the 90D to be an action/birding camera, i’m left thinking, “Dang, everything but THE ONE most important capability!”
@janinekrayer24994 жыл бұрын
Hi Craig, thanks so much for watching my video. Yes, I was also a bit disappointed with the focus abilities. However, I believe that Canon is long overdue with a beautiful 7Diii. I am pretty sure they might come up with a solution soon! As it is a single digit camera it will probably be a more expensive solution but at the end we must consider the R&D that goes with these cameras. Consumers always want sharper, faster, better and it needs to come from somewhere. It is quite amazing how fast the camera world has developed the last decade and I cannot wait to see what the next two years have ready for us. The world is leaning towards mirrorless.... there is technical restrictions that a DSLR camera cannot overcome and I find the new mirroless lenses of Canon are out of this world. Hi Janine, although I don’t normally comment on KZbin videos I felt I must comment on this review as it does the 90D a great injustice, you obviously Know your 7DMk11 very well as you have had it a long time, but you don’t know the 90D at all well, as you have made a lot of Errors in your review. I except the 90D Focusing system is not as good as the 7D Mk11 but it can be fine tuned in exactly the same way as the 7DMk11, the focusing options are there you just have to look for them and there are many more tweaks you can do for Wildlife Photography and the technology has moved on a lot since the 7DMk11. Canon should have made a 7DMK111 before moving onto Mirrorless It’s such a shame , the Mirrorless Cameras are not ready for Wildlife yet in my opinion and I know from my Bird Photography fraternity we were all waiting for the 7D Mk111.

Hi Chris, thanks so much for watching my video and your feedback. I do know my 7Dii a lot better as I had 5 years to play with it. But after all the R&D I was definitely bit disappointed with the focus abilities of the 90D. Even though you can fine tune them in the green menu I find that the lack of cases will throw must photographers off. Even with changing your accl./decl. tracking it doesn't react as quickly. The world is leaning towards mirrorless definitely.... there is technical restrictions that a DSLR camera cannot overcome (mostly the distance between the lens fitting and the sensor) and I find the new mirroless lenses of Canon are out of this world. Right now I am sticking tight with my 1Dxii as I cannot imagine shooting a malachite kingfisher in flight with an electronic view finder. Also I find the smaller cameras quite uncomfortable to hold even though they are much lighter. But lets see what there is to come.... One must give the cameras chance to develop. One must also remember that all EF lenses do fit on Canon's mirroless cameras ... they are not ready yet but I have a feeling they might be soon. Lets see what the Photokina has to offer this year!

There’s an important difference between the two cameras and although it’s not relevant in every scenario, it may make a difference in the final output, that’s metering accuracy. I’ve tested both cameras and noticed that 7DMKII prevents blown out highlights in contrasting backgrounds better than 90D. If there’s a white or bright object in the scene, and you’re using the optical viewfinder, it’s more than likely that it will be blown out by the 90D, it only happens in rare occasions when shooting with the 7D MKII under the same conditions.
