Shanghai during the colonial period was divided into various districts, which were created as a result of the influence of foreign powers. The most important of these were: British Quarter - created in 1842 after the First Opium War, when the British gained control of part of the city. It was one of the most important colonial districts, known for its European architecture and development of trade. American Quarter - created in 1848, also as a result of trade privileges. It was less extensive than the British, but still played an important role in trade and social life. French Quarter - created in 1849, it became an autonomous zone in which the French had their own law and administration. This district was known for its charming streets and cafes. China Quarter - an area that was not controlled by foreign powers and where the majority of the Chinese population lived. It was an area with a high population density and often poor compared to the colonial districts. This division lasted for many years, and Western influences in Shanghai significantly affected its urban, cultural, and economic development. After World War II and the Chinese Civil War, in 1949, Shanghai became part of the People's Republic of China, ending the colonial era.
