You know it’s funny, I bought one of those little strainer mills years ago used for a couple of dollars. I didn’t really know what it was for. I tried using it on mashed potatoes and that didn’t work. I tried using it on cut up tomatoes, now that I started canning and it didn’t work. Now I know what it’s for. Thanks for the knowledge. Great video Charles! Now I thought I was thrifty but you just showed me what I should have been doing all along with all my leftover tomato liquid. So here's my thrifty for you: I save my tomato skins and dehydrate them down to make a sauce out of them. I grow a lot of tomatoes so I get a large number of skins. What kind of tomatoes do you grow?
@OldAlabamaGardener4 жыл бұрын
Hello Janice. How have you been doing? Well I hope. I grow Better Boy tomatoes, that is my number one canning tomato. As to the liquid, when I pack tomatoes in the jars as I do, I have a lot of the liquid left. I don't want to just it away, so I make sauce with it. I canned tomatoes yesterday and today I am reducing the left over liquid. A number of people talk about using the skin and seeds also, perhaps I will try that one of these days. Hey OA I have a question I just bought a Angora rabbit I use fine pine shavings in her bed is it ok to use the manure and the pine shavings as mulch in my garden!!!
@OldAlabamaGardener4 жыл бұрын
Yes, the manure will be a great addition to your garden soil. The pine shavings will be slow to decompose. *_Do not rototill the pine shavings into the soil because as they begin to decompose they will suck up the nitrogen from the soil and you will have trouble growing garden plants._* OAG
@Tyrashabrooks4 жыл бұрын
@@OldAlabamaGardener ok in other words your saying let them decompose on top of the soil

@@Tyrashabrooks Yes, for the pine shavings. The rabbit manure you can incorporate into the soil or in a planting hole. Curious question: Why are you using pine shavings?Rabbits don't need any bedding, least that is what I think. *_On second thought, the small amount of pine shaving you will have probably won't make much difference in your soil, you could test it out by applying it to only a small part of your garden and see what happens._* OAG

OAG, this works well, but all day simmering with my propane, is it worth the cost of the fire for so long? Stopped in to say howdy, how ya doin? God bless ya! You could use a baster bulb tube to suck the juice out of the jar with the tomatoes, yes? OAG, you ever grow Amish Paste tomatoes, they are great for canning and sauce, so meaty!
@OldAlabamaGardener4 жыл бұрын
That is a good question. I think it is going to be a trade off of options. 1) I could buy canned tomato sauce from the store, possible as cheap or cheaper than I can grow the tomatoes and do the canning and its associated costs. 2) Continue to grow my own and can my own. Now: What are the advantages and disadvantages of each option? Option one advantage, probably cheaper, certainly easier and quicker. Disadvantages of option one, Are store bought tomatoes and tomato products healthy for me and my family, my answer is no! Why do I say store bought tomatoes and tomato products are not healthy? Because they are grown on land that is contaminated by the use of Round-Up and tomatoes are sprayed with poisons and chemicals that are not good fo us.. Another disadvantage of store bought canned tomato products is there is more (chemicals/preservatives) in the can than tomatoes. What are the advantages and disadvantages of option 2? The advantages are that I know what has been done to my tomato plants while they are growing and I know what is in my jar of canned tomatoes and tomato products because I know what I did or did not put in the jar. The disadvantages are yes, it takes my time to grow the tomatoes and can them. And yes It may not be more cost effective. I am 81 years old, working even day in my garden, growing vegetables, canning vegetables, making videos.........I don't think I could be doing these things eating the Standard American Diet (SAD). Sorry to get too long on my reply. How am I doing? I am doing great! And I feel I am richly blessed. I do appreciate you stopping by and I return the pleasant "Howdy" to you. SURE HERE IT IS> its made from my base, fresh grind up tomato with skin, seeds. Cayenne pepper, and salt to taste. I like my ketchup spicy, and a touch of cayenne really set its it off nice Taste As you go, some like it sweeter. some don't adjust to your taste> I might throw some BBQ sauce in there too> Taste b4 adding in a spoon, this will give you a Ideal of how much BBQ sauce you want in it, if you want any? This make about 6 cups of Ketchup If its to thick add some tomato juice, to thin try a paper towel to suck some juice out, When cooled i pour into a big GV ketchup bottles YUM that been cleaned he hee when you get half way down, make some more and add to it> So you never run out> I never had it go bad on me. Same with my salsa > i never run out of butter milk he hee there always 3 gal. in the ice box 1 or 2 is always making culture, for even MORE BUTTER MILK all i need is milk

I just want to let you know how much I love these videos, they’re helpful and very informative. I started a garden this year for my pawpaw who passed last November. He was an avid gardener and your demeanor reminds me a lot of him! I do have a quick question. I wondered what you use in your garden for worms eating your tomatoes. Do you spray or apply anything to deter worms from eating your tomatoes? I saw some holes, and I’m fine with some, but I’m talking about when they get in there so bad, you have to throw out some of the tomatoes.
@OldAlabamaGardener4 жыл бұрын
There are two sprays that I use and recommend. One is called: Pyola, it is a contact insecticide, that means you can spray it in the morning and eat the vegetable in the afternoon (wash it of course). A contact insecticide means that it must actually get on the insect or worm to kill it. Buy this only at Gardensalive.com. The second (and this is for worms only) is called: Bacillus thuringiensis, the short name for this is Bt, buy it at garden stores, maybe Walmart or Lowes, and order online. Thank you for watching my videos. If you haven't yet, please subscribe, if you have subscribed already, then thank you for subscribing. OAG

I found a trick that make cooking sauce quicker ! WATER ! is the problem. WHY YOU HAVE TO COOK IT LONGER> This way in 30 min, is all that needed. DRAIN THE WATER OFF. can use paper towels to soak up the water as well. Some time i make it to thick. and the left over juice or water is put some back into it . to the thickness you want ! I also freeze my sauce in qt freezer bags, to cut down the cost of jars, and boiling. Also the qt size bag is the perfect size for 4 days of sauce use It also makes more storage don't fill them fat. about 2" thick is plenty where it lays flat to stack and stack them in the freezer ~ if you do have a power outage, it acts as ice. to help keep things cold for a long time LIKE 6 DAYS, it also help cut down on YOUR electric bill from the compress running all the time

Consider the cost of the gas consumed to make this sauce not mentioning the time wasted.

I never get enough tomato's and peppers, I make and use them so much. My tomato base is, Grind up tomato's with cayenne pepper and salt That my base to make every thing from sauce, past, ketchup, and a chunky salsa> The tomato juice is saved to! To make V8 juice to drink. My salsa is 10 X better than PACE Picante Sauce YUM > That nice you can make things from yours too COOL
