We are repeating the Honey Comb Hybrid for the last 4 seasons and it is very desirable Sun Gold was simply a sugar bomb that we didn't enjoy Midnight Snack is definitely the favorite of our circle and I've gifted about 15 plants and everyone says their neighbors are always asking for extras. True Black Brandywine is my favorite for sandwiches My wife favorite is Black Krim and they are a very productive and early so they are earlier and productive till frost they will be the last when I'll need to cut back gardening as I'm 73 and everyone stops sometime. I'm using sunflower as a cover crop and finding raising tomatoes as 3 times easier and less work and getting bigger and better harvest in my testing method. Believe anyone who has 50 minutes a week and can walk on grass can raise tomatoes without a tilter just working mulch and planting sunflowers and tomato seedlings most handicap and elderly can do my method and it's working great for peppers and I'm circling 4 tomato plants with bush beans. Yes 4 tomato plants in a circle with a circle of green beans making 4 of these setups and expect to have more produce than the cattle panel system I've used for 8 years.. The 4 tomato cages are cheaper especially since so many are found in flea market sales for a bargain.The cages setup don't get any wind damage in my method also the cages are almost no work training the climbing vines.. No easier and cheaper way to get top productive tomato plants then my method.......

OK, so, I love your tomato tasting videos 100% NOW during the growing season. BUT COME DEC/JAN when I’m planning our small farm, I love them 1,000,000% and loooong to taste heirloom tomatoes! 🥰 Edited to correct my stupid typos! 🤣

😂 I know what you mean, in the winter I really miss their (tomatoes) amazing growth and different flavours. I can't imagine planning a farm though, what fun. How do you decide what to grow each year?
@forthosewhoHUNGER4 ай бұрын
@@veggieplot I grow the WEIRD stuff, vegetables everyone eats nut varieties mist country folk here have never seen or tasted. We’re so small we can’t compete on red rock-type tomatoes and normal slicer cucumbers, plain/common eggplants, etc. I have narrowed our selections to ONLY plant varieties with flavors that knock your socks off. I don’t ever want someone to bite i to a tomato from our farm and think, “I’ve had better.” Our competition sells their tomatoes for $2/lb and cucumbers and peppers for $0.50. All of their produce is insanely cheap. So, I have to keep flavor, production, beauty and novelty in mind when I choose varieties. Your videos, and others’, help me decipher what I will grow the following year. It’s my FAVORITE part of winter. I sit in front of our wood-burning stove, on the floor, with my tea and catalogs strewed EVERYWHERE around me. Great times!!!

Competing on price is never the way to go, especially with fruit and veg. There are so many big shop competitors that for a small grower, flavour and diversity is the way to go. Well, that's what I would do anyway. Your farm sounds terrific.

great video, Chris 💚🌿perfect to give us inspiration when picking new varieties to grow. I love the Sungold Select and believe when you say the Honeycomb is even nicer. We love the sweet tomatoes, too..... they all sound really delicious and you've done a fantastic job explaining all of them. Best wishes, Maiju 😊💚🌿

Thank you Maiju, I am glad the videos are useful as some of this year's tomatoes are definitely keepers. It'f funny though, because some I'd love to keep just because they look so interesting and exciting. I can see why tomatoes are so addictive to grow.

I don’t have any ripe Taiga yet but I had a True Colours by the same breeder that was my favourite tomato so far this year. I think I tried my Uluru Ochre before it was fully ripe so I’m reserving judgement until I can try another one. I’ve had ripe dwarf Purple Reign that I found had a nice rich flavour. My others have all been good and would probably make a grow again list if I didn’t have seeds for so many others to try.

That's the issue. There are so many tomatoes out there, most of them I have never heard of, and many more I'd like to try. Purple Reign and True Colours sound interesting so I might look into them.

TY soooo much for doing these tastings, I always come away with more ideas for things to try. I know what you mean about having them come ripe at the same time for taste comparison. That Cuban Salami sounds like a unique flavor profile for sure. 🍅🥰🍅💛🍅🥰🍅💜🍅🥰🍅

I agree that Honeycomb is far superior to Sungold. I grew Rebel Starfighter Prime last year and liked it, this year I am growing Rebel Starfighter VT16, which is the green version of the prime, so I will be interested to see how that tastes. Like the sound of the Cuban Salami, I will look for seed.

Just a heads up I have a Uluru Ochre this season and it has zero fruit. Like it hasn't set any fruit at all yet. So one of my worst performing out of about 50 varieties. While the Rosella Purple growing next to it has set numerous large, big impressive toms. I grew Uluru the year before as well, but I only had 2 decent tomatoes off it. So next year I am not going to bother again. It's not worth the lacklustre return. Even though it tastes pretty good. Also that Uluru Ochre he is growing is not proper Uluru Ochre, which is a small dwarf. It doesn't get above 1 meter. So I think the strain/lineage is unstable maybe. Some plants don't produce any fruit really and some plants don't grow in the dwarf habit maybe. I have heard people complain about having small yellow tomatoes as well on this. So a few issues with this variety.
@veggieplot4 ай бұрын
It’s a good strong growing plant Ali and the tomatoes are quite profuse and a good size. I’d love to know what you think of it. Are you having a soggy summer too?
@myrustygarden4 ай бұрын
@@petyrbaelish1718 oh yikes, I bought mine from Carmel Bella farms in the US so I’ll have to let you know how it did next season, my tomatoes this year are pants compared to last year it was funny enough too hot for tomatoes to set fruit early on 🤦♀️
@petyrbaelish17184 ай бұрын
@@veggieplot The taste of the two Uluru Ochre's that I got last season was pretty good. But it was only two tomatoes on one plant. And then this season, no tomatoes whatsoever. Both times that I have grown it the plants have been tiny as well, even compared to other dwarf varieties, so it really has done poor on production. Not worth the hassle for me now. I am in Surrey and since mid-July the weather has been pretty decent. On the dry side overall for us here. Not soggy by any stretch in SE England. So far the best varieties this year have been Black Krim, Brandywine Suddeth, Ozark Sunrise, Mariana's Praise and Gourmandia. Honeycomb has done well too.
@petyrbaelish17184 ай бұрын
@@myrustygarden It has been a weird season here. Last year the first half of summer was very warm and sunny allowing for good early growth and fruit set, and then it was cool and wet during the 2nd half effecting ripening. This year it is the exact opposite, with a cool, cloudy first half which effected growth early on and likely effected fruit setting. But the 2nd half of this summer has been pretty good for ripening - warm and sunny. So exact opposite to last year. The only thing that is the same is the crap production on that Uluru Ochre. It is genuinely in the mix with Floridity, Golden Bumblebee, Purple Bumblebee for worst plants of the season. Xanadu Green Goddess has done crap as well.

I grew Honeycomb last year and found it to be mealy and bland. I was so disappointed in both the flavor and the texture. The first couple were a bit underripe, but I left the others that I tried for much longer to make sure they were super ripe and I still got very little flavor from them. I'm growing in the hot and humid southeastern United States, so I wonder if conditions could affect it? Sungold reminds me of fresh orange juice and it is by far my favorite cherry tom. I'm almost tempted to try Honeycomb again, but will likely wind up just gifting or trading the seeds.
@veggieplot4 ай бұрын
That is a shame, and I would suggest trying a different packet of seeds, although your local temperatures might make a real difference. I think Jen Joy, who is also in the USA, didn't rate hers either, so I wonder if there's a link there somewhere.
