I love this about certain speedrunners. It's especially common to see for more exhibition style speedruns too, like GDQ, but some speedrunners are willing to do it in basically every run. reminds me of a clip in "super mario 64", which can save a second or two if done right, but is VERY hard to do, so most runners will try it ONCE and just climb the stairs normally if it doesn't work the first time.

there is actually unique voice lines if you get cured and deactivate the QEP before the sunbeam gets there. they claim they can't find a parking spot and turn around and go home, claiming they'll send for somebody else to come pick you up. i think this makes little sense seeing as they had no trouble finding a "parking spot" in the regular gameplay as they tried to touch down before being shot. nah i think a reaper leviathan should have reached up from the depths as soon as they landed and dragged the sunbeam into the grave of the ocean amidst screaming on the transmission. but nooooo that's too fucked up apparently. nothing's too fucked up for subnautica in my book but okay

A few more tidbits... 1. Equipping the O₂ tank early not only messes up the death timing, it also actually slows you down as you swim. In a normal playthrough, the trade-off between speed and O₂ is negligible, but speed's the goal here so picking up the tank is saved until after the Seaglide can be built. The Seaglide pulls you at a constant velocity no matter what you are wearing or holding, or what direction you are moving; our speedrunner can equip the O₂ tank without losing speed. This is also why the Any% run doesn't use swimfins, as any bonus to swim speed is negated by the Seaglide's constant velocity. 2. The first time visiting the kelp forest after the coral tube, our speedrunner is already doing some pre-work on the doggo teeth. You mentioned clearing out the bad metal; there's also checking on the presence of good metal, counting the dogs to make sure there are enough there in the first place, and watching to see if they drop teeth during this first visit. 3. You can identify the crates with Seaglide fragments by a scorch mark on top of the crate. 4. A subtle way the death inventory mechanics work in the runner's favor: after cutting a shroom, you're normally given 4 shroom seeds. Our runner would end up with an inventory-clogging number of shroom seeds when flooding the base or hacking deep shrooms, but because he dies instead of simply returning, he is left with only one shroom seed each time (later placed in the time capsule). 5. Casual players can take advantage of the power drain order by building 1-3 solar panels BEFORE building a bioreactor in a base. Power will always drain first from the naturally recharging solar panels before taking any fuel from your bioreactor, making constant-drain items like lights and water filters consume less fuel. 6. Fish skip can be done with any fish, but there is something about hotkeys and the way your inventory is alphabetized that can make it desirable to do it with certain fish. I understand that bladderfish are undesirable. 7. Resources in multiple buckets (i.e. gold in both the sandstone and shale buckets) drain from BOTH buckets when harvested. Sandstone's 8-count cycle is broken when the first gold is taken from a shale.

I really appreciate the early spoiler warning, particularly visual spoiler warning, even though the game is like 5 years old now. Subnautica is a wonderful game but "wonder" is a huge part of that, and if someone is planning to play it they need to go in as blind as possible to get the most out of it. Seeing biomes before discovering them yourself can really damper the amazement when the player finally does so.
@internetdragon76242 жыл бұрын
Genuinely, it was such a nice touch I was surprised it was included anyways. I think people sometimes think that age means at a certain point the spoiler warning doesn't matter, but it does, especially in games like these. It's a really good spoiler warning too- if you've played the game, the stuff presented makes sense. If you haven't, its nonsense. And thats a really great way of going about it imo.

I wasn’t aware that people who cared about spoilers even watched speedruns. It seems like common sense that a speedrun will more than likely contain spoilers in it
@Tukaro2 жыл бұрын
@@lt_johnmcclane That's fair, though I approach them in a different way. I've watched speedruns for games I haven't played but intend to, yet I expect only "minor" spoilers. These tend to be a bit old and I've already been spoiled, but a) any% speedruns require skipping entire, huge chunks of the game; b) my memory isn't amazing and I sorta zone out at the end as I'm mostly interested in the tech/glitches used. (Endgame also tends to be plowed through, with the run completed once the player loses control, so final cutscene revelations typically aren't included in these sort of things.) There are entire biomes this speedrun/video skips, so someone watching this wouldn't be _super_ spoiled, but the spoiler warning is more important in this case because "visual discovery" is part of what made Subnautica so enjoyable: Even if a new area is impressive or different in, say, Skyrim or Fallout, it still sticks to an overall art design. Subnautica does not do this, each biome type is extremely different from the others.

I’ve been in the Subnautica speedrun community for a couple years now, was once a runner but I mostly spectate now. I just wanted to shout out Eclypsed a little more. When I started, the world record was around 34 minutes and pretty stagnant. Slowly, new strats were found that took off a bit here and there, but when Eclypsed came in, the world record was somewhere in the 32’s. I personally hypothesized that the run could be brought down only to around 31:30. Eclypsed came out of nowhere, absolutely destroyed every perception we had about what the run could be, and currently holds the wr by almost A MINUTE AND A HALF over 2nd place. Absolutely unit. Edit!: there’s also a great idea for “speedcucked” in this game. The cure animation takes absolutely forever, and dispite everyone looking for a way, we can’t find a way to skip the cure that saves time.

It’s well worth it, I have absolutely 0 patience to play a story game more than once and I’ve played subnautica 3 times, the only game I’ve played more than once.

yeah I can really recommend it! I feel like it has a good balance kind of? the grindyness is not too bad for example. and the neon fish are just super pretty. sometimes I just love sitting in my all glass bedroom I built and watch the ocean lol!

Do yourself a favor and don't look stuff up! The saddest thing about the game is you can only discover everything once, and there's a TON of stuff not shown in the video.

Just wanted to say thank you, I have not been doing well at all for the past few months and just having a stranger tell me what I already know has helped more than you could know. Usally youtubers mentioning something liked that will be followed by a better help sponsership but you didn't. you ddin't take advantage of my mental health for money and views and also you were just so kind and I want to say thatthis has helped me more than you know

You're not gonna believe me, but these words at 21:46 actually helped me. I never thought that these things really help anyone, but I was wrong. I was watching random videos just to stop thinking about everything bad that is happening in my life recently and to escape my bad feelings. And this few sentences in the video were actually more helpfull then everything that my friends were able to say to me. I am really thankfull for your words, it was unexpected and therefore more influential for me.

Thanks! I’m always experimenting with things (for better or worse) to try and figure out the best way to convey info in these videos. Always room for improvement, so constantly trying new things.

That Mental Health PSA you made at around 22 mins hit me pretty hard. I was genuinely contemplating some pretty bad stuff just before and hearing that out of nowhere made me tear up, even as im writing this now still. Some people might not appreciate those things you say, but you made a difference for me today, and I just wanted to say thank you. Youre a good bean.

Hey dog, I want you to know that I know how you feel, I've been there. The thing that helped me the most was being able to talk about it, seek help if you must. I ended up getting professional help, which is literally a building full of people who's jobs, education and careers revolve around helping people like you and me, so don't ever think no one understands how you feel or that no one can help you. That was two years ago, when I got lost. The treatment worked, meds worked, hardest thing about it was reaching out to someone, if you feel you must please reach out to someone who cares about you. Help is the only step forward after you're unable to deal with it yourself. I believe in you, everyone that knows you does.
