I know, I know... its September (nearly October) and we are only now getting the first real flush of the Toms. What a year this has been chaps, seriously!! But we carry on. Sowing coriander for both outdoors under the environmesh/veggiemesh ( gardening-natu... ) and in seed trays for the polytunnel.

People in Canada with a greenhouse put buckets or barrels (dark or black) filled with water to modify the temperature of the greenhouse. It's like having a static warmer. Some set them in full sun. Others add a dark shade cloth on the North side inside the greenhouse to absorb early morning sun, usually the coldest part of the day.

Talking of things that just didn't get going this year we usually have a jungle of self sown nasturtiums just three and grew flowered till last week we now have about one hundred seedlings all over the place but I doubt that they'll come to anything as I need to weed and plant up spring bulbs and we have only just been frost free several nights recently. To ripen the toms you just need the banana peal and has to be in contact with with the plant IE hang on a lower leaf or truss. Pears don't need to actually touch the plant but hang them about half way uo the plants

I find that the timing is key for developing a great tasting tomato. Remember, you planted VERY late this year. We were literally harvesting our first tomatoes of the season the same week that you were planting yours. The first harvest is always some of the best, but we have had an amazing year for tomatoes. You'll notice that early spring greens, radishes and peas grow much sweeter in the cool months. The hours of sunlight make a big difference in the growing and ripening of your tomatoes. If you don't plant during the proper times, the plants just don't have the opportunity for the best flavor. Also, let your tomatoes fully ripen on the vine. The matter of a couple of days can make a world of difference in the sweetness factor. There's a science of fructose development. If it is plucked to early or late it can dramatically change the flavor. Also I would recommend asking others in the allotment how their tomatoes are this year and compare notes. Best wishes. Keep trying!

Our tomatoes were great here in New Zealand from January to April 2024, they were so sweet and had the wow factor, but it was thirty five degrees Celsius many days, and not a lot of rain for summer and autumn. Also had to collect water in a couple of water tanks for the garden due to not much rain!

It's been a funny old growing year - I guess a "traditional" British summer - which is why package holidays to Spain became so popular 😂. My outdoor green tomatoes are slowly ripening, surprisingly given the current weather, so they are being baked in the oven with olive oil rather than being eaten on the patio with meats and a salad and a nice chianti. Going to try Tigerella next year. My courgettes are still delivering, but a lot of the "fruit" don't set properly or just rot - I think that is down to poor pollination - certainly the number of insects, particularly bees have been well below normal 😢. But then there is always next year 😁. New Years resolution (already) - organise the garden better 😂.

I agree for the tomatoes. Late ripening, diluted flavour, extremely frustrating. I know we had a lot of rain here in Montréal (Canada) which doesn't help. A tip I've heard is to make sure to pick them after several days without watering. Apparently it helps to concentrate the flavour. Cheers!

I planted ONE zucchini this year to prevent any avalanche, and the poor thing was beset with some weird fungus, some hard white mushroom thing. Total loss. My best plant this year was my melons. I’ve decided my favorite garden item is now sun-warmed melon, cut into cubes. Sorry green beans and tomatoes!

The light levels and lack of sun affect the sugar levels in the tomatoes, the same as strawberries. Your tomatoes look fantastic, I’ve only had a few, they are growing and fruiting now! I’ve gardened for years, same place, just realised I don’t get enough sun, especially on my greenhouse, no sun after end August! The Tokyo turnips are the best as far as I’m concerned. This video is interesting and I love watching them, you and your mum feel like my friends. Who does Lil belong too, she’s gorgeous. Thanks

It was funny seeing you smile at the tomatoes 🍅, i know you haven't got much of a choice but clubroot resistance seeds are the answer, clubroot will not go away it will spread everywhere, on your hands,tools,pots, etc its a nightmare Thanks!
@allisontison40
@allisontison40 7 сағат бұрын
I was reading about club root, it appears to me that a large amount of lime would be very helpful, I’d also cover that area with clear plastic to “heat up” the soil, and not plant any brassicas there ever. Maybe you shouldn’t plant any brassica transplants/ seedlings unless you start them from seeds. The disease spreads from spores from infected soil, plants and tools. Spraying your tools with alcohol is a good idea too.

Putting all my optimism into next year🤞🏻 Fingers tightly crossed you get your remaining toms and peppers to ripen.

You did better than me on the turnips. I didn't even have any creatures digging mine out and mine have completely failed to grow. With the terrible grey and rainy weather I think I needed to have sown 2 or 3 weeks earlier. I think I'm with you on the tomato flavour. My sungold and honeycomb have been great as they are on a sunny south facing patio but my Cherokee Purple aren't as sweet as last year.

Agree re Tom's and everything this year too wet n cold at night with no sun. Blighted Tom's, those that partly developed ripening indoors, had 6 courgettes the size of my index finger, 1 pumpkin, no beans, my lemon drops have only just setting fruit and may not even turn shame as the plants are ladended. Triple pants and bogies year all round. 😵‍💫😵🥴 My worst in 15 years of having an allotment. Now just need to tidy the car crash and start again next year. All I need is the gremlins to jump into the water butt's and cause more chaos. 😂😂 Onwards and upwards folks. 😊

I ordered Alyce’s Dream tomato seeds right after you first mentioned it in a video earlier this summer. I got the seeds and planted them about a week later… so a much later start than you. I feel guilty that I’ve been harvesting and enjoying them since early September and expect to harvest well into November. Delicious!.. though I’m getting tired of tomatoes. I’ve also had baskets and baskets of peppers and aubergines. Shows you the difference that 15 degrees of latitude south and an ocean apart has. That said, I’ll take your weather any day. The brutal heat, humidity, and drought were life threatening this summer… lol! the grass is always greener somewhere else 😊.

FYI, swinging was okay, sound was okay. LOL My best tasting tomatoes this year were Black Krim and Black Cherry. Yum! Maybe just your UK climate this year affected flavours? I grow the Hakurai (?) turnip but find them susceptible to flea beetle and wireworm. The flavour and texture is wonderful! They are also great for succession sowing since they germinate and grow so easily and quickly.

My tomatoes have been very bland also 😢 but yours look fab. Chillies very hot though, even Cayennes, but I haven’t had much luck getting ripe chillies from ultra hot chinense varieties (Jamaican hot, orange habanero, scotch bonnet). They are growing well but the heat and light is fading fast. Currently in Greece and you would be very envious like me of the sun and heat for ripening chillies and squashes at this time of year.

Yes my zinnias are just coming out now too except the dwarf ones they were early. After having such a challenging year you are certainly getting some superb harvests. 11:48 yikes winter bobble hat. I watched a gentleman called Dipak in London that crushes his coriander seed then sows them. Well almost time for the bubble wrap party in the greenhouse. Can you do water cuttings for the agreti? I wrapped my tomatoes in newspaper and they all ripened nicely. You just have to check them every few days. Glad mom had a great birthday 🎂, Ali 🌞🥶🇨🇦

Just to add to the info, I'm gardening on the other side of the planet - southern Vancouver Island - and we are having the same issue with the tomatoes, very late (Sept) and flat flavoured. And also I've noticed that it's the fruiting veggies that are not moving along as per usual: peppers, pumpkins, egg plant, etc. And all my gardening friends, from the southern part of British Colunbia to the far north of the province have been reporting the same issues. It's the fruits that have failed or are very late. Greens have been abundant. Interesting to hear you are experiencing a similar issue. You are on the other side of the planet. I do wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that the planet is beginning to pulling away from the sun (we are on an eliptical orbit afterall) and its changing the quality and strength of the light. If anyone has any clear info on that I would like to know, because if it's true, it's going to start changing the way we garden. Just sayin'.
