It’s a spiritual thing for me ! I found God in the mountains , literally ! I understood the living God one day when I was 10 years old standing high on the peaks of the Blue Ridge looking over a vast expanse of blue and green and the dogwoods were in bloom and I knew for the first time that there was indeed a living God and his home on earth is on our mountains ! Also live in the area. We came out relatively unscathed, but heard (and saw) that they are sending mule trains to certain parts because that is the only way of reaching some towns and valleys that have been cut off for days. It's eye-opening how one event can send people back to the mid-19th Century in terms of what they need to do to survive and have basic needs.

Yes, there are mule trains and some going in on horse back in the back country. So true how fragile our systems are and how quickly they can fail. It's an important reminder to prepare, stay healthy and have some skills.

I'm east of yall and not in the mountains. My town was hit primarily by falling trees and lack of power. A tree fell on our neighbors house (they are okay) and one fell approx 20 ft from our home... I thought SO similarly to yall... "this the worst it could be." and then i heard about the lake lure dam imminently failing... and i then i thought "okay I guess THIS is as bad as it gets." And then the info about all my mountain neighbors came in. My heart broke. I can hardly stop thinking about it. Hoping to help in any way I can

Was just in this town this past June for shopping in the small shops/stores and having a yummy lunch at the old jail hotel/cafe (cannot remember the name of it)... we enjoyed our patio lunch of their "rainbow bowl" looking off to the beautiful French Broad River. Never in a million years did I think it could flood so intensely and so rapidly as it did. My heart is breaking for all of Appalachia during this disaster, especially the historic town of Marshall.

Thank you for sharing. I live in WNC too. Our area had flooding and many down trees and powerlines. The worst for me was losing communications and wondering if family and friends were okay. We finally was able to hook a little radio to our small generator and listen to 99.9 for news. Then, we realized the large scale of damage. Yesterday, I travelled to Avery County to deliver some needed supplies to a tiny community. I saw only a glimpse of the devastation. Like you, I have had so many different emotions and hurt for our once beautiful WNC and its people. I agree it helps to do what we can do to help. Past hurricaine survivor…but we didn’t have storm surge or flooding…be careful cleaning up watch out for stuff like nails ! I stepped on one during hurricaine cleanup at my house. Clean your hands well if you touch mud and muck..you don’t know what germs are in there. I hope everyone had flood insurance on their property and homes. I’ve seen videos today about Florida and their homeowners insurance is refusing to pay for claims unless they had flood insurance. In Florida they’re expecting many people will have to sell their property, homes at a loss. Because they don’t have enough savings to rebuild without having insurance money to rebuild. Yes, we had curfew for months after the hurricaine I was in. My house wasn’t looted until I just about had it finished..and the looters spray painted all over my walls, kitchen cabinets, piano and remaining furniture. Homeowners insurance was a nightmare too..the mortgage company kept about $15,000 of the money insurance gave me. So in the end I lost the house and moved out of Florida. You’re correct there is no ‘they’ coming to fix stuff for people…we had no ‘they’ either..all the clean up was us, neighbors helping neighbors. The Federal Government does not come in and fix stuff for you. Yeah, you’re kinda in the shock stage..the doing gets you through the day and it’s also healing too to do things and help each other. I’m sorry I’m so negative..,wish I could help..or at least give everyone a hug. Praying for you all.
