I absolutely LOVE how Lara is presented in this original game. Not too long ago I didn't care much about the whole TR franchise, but after deciding to see what all the 'hoohaa' was about, I decided to give it a shot, going through the games in release order. Lara is now my favorite character. :O Currently playing Legend. Gosh she's so cool and presented in such a human/realistic way and details (for a super athletic, intelligent archaeologist).
@missxmarvel8 жыл бұрын
I find her corny in legends. And the whole search for her mother was boring Here she's the best and no emotions to make her seem more human just a strong Woman.
@InvaderGIR988 жыл бұрын
+Emma Frost Lol, the original Lara was badass and I love her, but she's a sociopath. I agree the whole Mother and Father Arc Anniversary/Legend/Underworld had going on was annoying, but someone can be made human without being obnoxious. Take the newest incarnation of Lara for example. She's not annoying, the only thing I have a problem with is she completely lacks the original Lara's verbal cleverness, wit and sarcasm.

@@missxmarvel well, not everyone is going to like all the stories. Legends was cool overall and underworld was great. As a game new Tomb raider is good but it may as well be called Dark Island adventure and Lara may as well be called Cindy or Terry because she is so drastically different in that game in both design and and personality. Whatever reason or excuse they had for changing her is all kind of foolish if they change her this much. She used to be a larger than life super heroine with a very iconic look, now she is more average or bland (still "good looking" if you want to put it that way) but lacking the appeal and strength of underworld and before. this game she clearly looks like a doll because of graphical limitations but at least she had one female enemy. the new one it's her vs a bunch of men which adds nothing to the idea of a woman being strong.

@@dimitripapadopoulos5180 Thank you for the reply. To be honest this is the Lara I always looked up to and want to be like her. and its even mentioned in her original bio that only traveling makes her truly happy and I could relate to that so much,but now what's left of Lara to admire? 9:45 Gotta love how Natla's expensive yacht is powered by a hot-bulb engine (typical sound) which is normally found in old fishing boats. :) Hot-bulb engines sit between old steam engines and modern diesels. They were cheap, rudimentary and can run on crude oil and virtually every poorly combustible fuel such as vegetable oil, kerosene, creosote, heck some even ran on used engine oil(!). For this reason they were obviously popular with poor fishermen. I'd say that whoever was responsible for the sound design of the first Tomb Raider game just went down to the local port and recorded a few fishing boats passing by and then labeled them "boat sound". It's funny to hear an old fishing boat sound with Natla's expensive yacht.

OG playstation was back when developers were just being creative and weren't answering to some big business overlords demanding games be like everything else to make money + dlc and microtransactions. Good games are still made but in general greed kills creativity and it's had a major effect on the gaming industry.

I don't care what anyone says, the dialogue in this game is miles ahead of Anniversary imo. It's strange and was extremely hard to follow as a kid, but I love how bizarre it all sounds. It's dry as hell, but has a real charm to it. You don't hear dialogue like this anymore since everyone is too busy watering everything down to make it easier for everyone to understand. Anniversary took such a cliche route. If I wanted cliche Hollywood dialogue there are a million other games that did it, and did it much better than Anniversary. This though? This is one of a kind. Lara in the beginning had adventures because she was hired or just for travel. In her original bio it says she only feels happy the fullest when she travels. I wished developers focused on the story telling more instead of making her look human. And the parts where she struggled to walk through the thick snow is so un needed.

Nata - Then you like a big park: Peru, vast mountain ranges to cover [percorrere], sheer walls of ice, rocky crags, savage winds and there’s this little trinket. An age-old artifact of mystical power is buried in the unfound tomb of Qualopec. That’s my interest. You could leave tomorrow. Are you busy tomorrow? - Lara - Well, you have my total attention now. I’m not quite sure if I’ve got yours, though, hello! [ma guarda tu] Larson - I’ll heal and hide you to a barn door yet. Lara - Of course… Larson - Yeah, and that driveling piece of the Scion you want to keep it so bad, I’ll harness it right up, you… Lara - Wait, we’re talking about the artifact head. Larson - Damn straight we’re alright (about).. Lara - Hold on, I’m sorry, this piece you say, where’s the rest? Larson - Miss Natla put Pierre Dupont on that trail. Lara - And where is that? Larson - Ah, (you) ain’t fast enough for him. Lara - So you think all this talking is just holding me up!?! Larson - I don’t know where is this little Jackrabbit frog later running in to. You’ll have to ask Miss Natla. Lara - Thank you. I will. - Lara reading - Relocated now to Francis Folly, new temptations torment me. Rumors about my fellow brother says under a tomb beneath our monastery is the body of Tihocan, one of the three legendary rulers of the lost continent Atlantis, and that with him lies his piece of the Atlantic Scion. The pendants divided and shared between the three rulers which curbs tremendous powers. Powers beyond the creator himself. I told sweated such possibilities, I’m so close to my mortal self. Each night I bit myself read at these fantasies, but it is indeed to test. Lara - Pierre, you’re a little bug. - Lara - Here lies Tihocan, one of the two just rulers of Atlantis who even after the curse of the continent had tried to keep rule here in these barren other lands. He died without child and his knowledge has no heritage. Look over us kindly, Tihocan. - Kold - You just pull the duff end of a wishbone. Cowboy leader - Howdy! Lara - Afternoon! Natla - Left Larson sucking wind, damn eh?! Lara - If that is the phrase… Natla - Well, your little vacation right is over now! Time to give back what you’ve hijacked off me. Kold - Let’s try the lunch box Natla - Well, kill her! _ You’re morons! _ Let’s go _ Kold - What the heck was that? Skateboarder kid - What? Kold - That one. Skateboarder kid - Probably just a fish! Kold - Maybe some fish, kid. Skateboarder kid - Than you have got to learn to chill! I’m going back inside. 'r you coming? - Kold - Steady! Skateboarder kid - Here she goes! Natla - We’re ready yet! - Natla - You can’t do this! Qualopec - We condemn you, Natla of Atlantis, for your crimes, with a flagrant misuse of your powers and for robbing as a harm. Natla - You can’t, I … Qualopec - Breaking the three bond of consent there are people are ruled and secured under. And invading Tihocan and myself with our army, our warriors and key for our pyramid, so that you can use the pyramid. Its powers of creation for your own mindless destruction. Natla - Mindless!? Look at you! Neither of you have one squared of inventive juice in your heads. Wasters. Qualopec - Let’s just do it. Natla - Tihocan!? Tihocan - You use the sacramental place as a source of individual pleasure as some freak factory. Natla - There’re survivalist, a new generation. Tihocan - A slaughter till now. And you, we’re going to lock you in limbo, make your veins, heart, feet and that diseased brain stick solid with frozen blood. Breathe you eternal unrest, Natla! Natla - You want restyle all your damn continent Atlantis. - Natla - Back again. Lara - And you? For grand reopening I assume. Natla - Evolution’s in a rut, natural selection at an all-time low, sipping out fresh meat will incite territorial rages again, will strengthen and advance us, even create new breeds. Lara - Kind of evolution on steroids then. Natla - A kick in the pants. Those runs Qualopec and Tihocan had no idea. The cataclysm of Atlantis struck a race of floundering the wimps. Plummeted them to the very basics of survival again. It shouldn’t happen like that. Lara - Or like this. Voice-over - Hatching commences in 15 seconds. Natla - Too late for abortions now!? Lara - Not without the heart of the operation! Natla - No!! Voice-over - Ten_ Five, four, three, two, one.

Back in the day, this was mindblowing like a playable movie. Tomb Raider's cinematics walked so MGS's could run a few years later

wow i feel old watching this lol brings back SO many memories i was 9 when this game came out and it was SO different and ahead of the curve. I remember how excited i was running around her house and making her swim seeing the boxes all around the mansion made me very excited....still a classic game and to survive in the original tomb raider you had to be good at the game now they've made her jumps and etc automatic taking the thrill out of actually making the jumps like in the ps1 games!!

I played this game on my Sega Saturn a long while ago, when my English listening was very poor and I was able to understand so very feel, but some lines of the dialogues are soooo intact in my mind (the last dialogue between Lara and Natla, the "thank you, I will" in the scene with Larson...). I've just finished playing the Anniversary remake (yeah, a litte too late, but I'm not a hard gamer I play only ocasionally) and although there are improvements to the storytelling, some things are definetely better in the original XD

Has anyone noticed that they left out the cutscene where Natla activates the Scion which comes before the cutscene where the top of the pyrimid is revealed? Also I think it's funny where Lara say "Pierre, you litter bug" when she finds the empty baked beans tin next to the campfire in front of the St. Francis Folly entrance. They recreated the same scene in Tomb Raider Anniversary but with a fizzy drinks can instead only it didn't seem as funny when she calls Pierre a litter bug.

I've no objections to any of the improvements of Lara Croft's looks--all but one: I miss that wonderful snarl on her face when she's angry. To me, that was the best part of her personality.
