The reason for the lack of tombs is the fact that Lara is not exactly a "tomb raider" yet. At the end of the game Lara says," I'm not going home," and that she needs answers as far as her dad is concerned. This paves the way for later games and how Lara searches tombs because of the information her dad had researched and come to the conclusion of. After this game she has more trust in what her dad had researched and found out and actually feels like she became a Croft. It wouldn't make sense that she went around the island searching for tombs when shes trying to save Sam and get off the damn island now would it?

Credit where it's due: The newest remake games are very well made. But it's not Tomb Raider, on principle. Tomb Raider was like the Legend of Zelda with guns, and a badass female lead; ALSO FIGHTING A T-REX. Tomb Raider 2013 would be like making Pokemon into a super edgy, hyper violent monster summoning anime where the Poke-balls are magical artifacts and the Pokemon kill each other. Or like turning Grand Theft Auto into a "Street Gangsta works undercover for the police to overthrow an illegal network of car-thieves and chop-shops". Or like if they remade Devil May Cry's Dante into a hard-boiled detective who has to stop a secret demon invasion when he learns that his father, who taught him the trade of being a Private Investigator, was actually a demon spy who betrayed the armies of Hell and discovers he has super powers. That'd be like if Resident Evil swapped out Umbrella and the B.O.W.s for a Necromancer Cult and supernatural zombies and demons. The 2013 remake completely took the game and turned it upside down and removed everything that made Tomb Raider an individual compared to other games.

I mean.. they could've easily made the tombs part of the main story by for example letting her have to go through one to get answers and clues about Himiko. Or let her stumble into one after the whole plane crash situation, maybe the pilot would've fallen in front of one and she'd have to go through to progress the story idk.. The game plays nice and I liked it don't get me wrong but it's not a Tomb Raider game. Making the tombs optional means she doesn't even have to go through one to become the Tomb Raider she's meant to be. It defeats the whole purpose of what a Tomb Raider game is meant to be.

Mr102405 SHE WAS NOT WIMPY. If you had to go off and kill someone for the first time when all you've ever wanted to do was be an archeologist then you'd probably freak out a little too...she is only human at the end of the day...this game is about her becoming the strong character she is today...and the outfit was fine, just cause she doesn't have short shorts and a scooping neckline (Which in real life would be so stupid cause you would have so much skin bare where you could get scratches and shit from navigating the terrain) doesn't give you a right to hate the game.

I'm playing it for the first time. It's a great game. I just don't like the shaky camera. The camera even shakes during cut scenes. It gives me a freaking headache. Also, the game has flaws with it's narrative. We barely get to know these secondary characters that are important to Lara, and many of them die, but we don't feel that impact since we barely knew them. And the villain is super generic and uninteresting.

Adam Hart-Dyke Except the developers clearly stated it was their goal to increase the number of tombs and increase the challenge of the puzzles in Rise of the Tomb Raider. They're doing this because players wanted more of that. They have their fans now, and they have a solid launch title to build off and they are clearly doing that.

The only things i'd really missed about this game is: 1: It's easy, no matter the difficult you choose and 2: The survival aspect is too weak, when i saw them making you kill a deer, i thought it would be like MGS3 where you have to hunt for some food and etc... felt kinda disappointed about that. But still one of the greatest games i've played that year!

I believe early builds of the game did have a hunger system but it was ultimately removed. The ending was also different where Sam dies but was changed after playtesters felt like they hadn't really achieved anything at the end.

I heard really bad things about this game, and was convinced it was bad, until only 2 weeks ago, it was free for Xbox gold members, so I was like "free game? Sign me up!" And I realized all that hate was false, this without a doubt goes on my top 10, seriously. And honestly, I liked the multiplayer mode, it was fast paced, simple, and just plain fun. but unlike what Joe said, the game never crashed for me or lagged in singleplayer (probably because the stuff was all fixed by that point), but multiplayer crashed sometimes. other than that, let me reiterate what I previously said. Great game, 10/10, must have, I completely agree with this review.

I like this game a lot and I like the new Lara Croft, but I can only give it an 8/10 max. Plot was very bland, I don't give a fuck about the characters (I don't even remember their names) and just too many freaking quick-time events. So many missed opportunities to make the combat more fun. But new Lara Croft is hot as fuck. Where's the nude mod? :( But what they did manage to do well was make the character development for Lara interesting even though everything else going on with the other characters and the plot was boring.

One of the many things I appreciated about this game is that unlike another *cough* similar game about treasure hunting... Tomb Raider doesn't lock the door behind you every few steps so you miss items and have to redo whole chapters. Uncharted did that shit for 6 games, it only took Tomb Raider one to do it right.

I'd just like to say that The Last Of Us came out AFTER this Tomb Raider ._. I am a massive fan of Tomb Raider, I played the first game, when I was 3 years old, I've been a Tomb Raider fan since the age of 3. And I freaking LOVE this game. It is a reboot. It had to be different. The cutscenes are fantastically directed. The controls are far more fluid compared to previous games. The graphics are superb. The camera is polished. I say that you are just being purposely hateful on change. This game is a fresh addition to the series and she is far more realistic, actually finally realistic for once. You are not a fan of something if you hate on the game.

I think it would have been equally successful by a different name because there's just too big of a difference in the previous tomb raider titles. I liked the game and story but it is kind of a smack in the face of fans for insulting our intelligence like this with such easy puzzles and extremely linear gameplay.

This game wasn't extremely linear? Yes it had a set course for the main objective, but that didn't stop you from being able to explore and discover. Besides the fact every Tomb Raiders have done this method. So I don't see how thats a slap to face of fans. The puzzles aren't really needed in this game if you think about it. She isn't going after some rare, priceless and powerful artifact that NEEDS to have those puzzles in place to protect it, shes going after her friend. So to have them more frequent and difficult would kind of feel forced to the player. Look at like this, this isn't Lara Croft, the hardened badass yet, this is Lara Croft the girl whos never gone through these kind of things before. Let the next game bring the more difficult puzzles.

But you're right this is a survival and I'm willing to accept this for the first part in the series if the sequels turn out to be actual Tomb Raider games.

What people don't understand is that this is a reboot of Tomb Raider, not a prequel of the original. The game was designed for modern day gamers who have different views on games compared to the past. I tried both and I have to say I loved this one while the old ones were ok, but horrible controls, crappy graphics and stupid storylines with that stupid double flip BS just pulled me right out. This game modeled itself after uncharted, but with a more grimy and serious feel. This is a great introduction to NEW people into the NEW tomb raider series. All you old timers stop whining and get with the times, the old Lara is dead and out of the ashes "A survivor is born"

I just got done with Tomb Raider on Xbone and it blew me away. I used to play the old tomb raiders as a kid and I enjoyed this game much more. I am excited to see the next Tomb Raider!

When my little brother got an Xbox 360 for Christmas this year, I got this game for it and I absolutely love it. Since I'm unused to playing shooters with an analog stick I was shooting like an amateur at first, but I'm getting better. It actually felt like I was learning how to fight alongside Laura which has made me even more attached to her character.

Tomb raider fans doesn't need review because they know 'survivor is born' and she saves her friends fighting solarris. Our survivor is evolved into 'Explorer' in rise of the tomb raider, definitely best game of reboot trilogy. She Knows trinity and follow her father's path. She saves world from trinity. Our 'explorer' becomes 'predator' in shadow of the tomb raider as she hunts down trinity and again saves world from apocalypse by not letting into hands of wrong one. Lara croft was real and best in the rise of the tomb raider, she was committed. Oh man big fan of her. Never seen such female protagonist. Since 2013, and now it's 2020... fans will never forget her. Tribute to greatest adventurer.

She's not explained at all "oh she goes through so much, it's great to see a strong female character gaming" she doesn't have any back story or personality in the game. She gets ship-wrecked, and that's about it. I never cared when she was in danger, I didn't like the character because there was no character, just a thing that got hurt that I was expected to care about. She's just there so people can go "look at this amazing female character, which is basically a discount Nathan Drake" You do see her talk to people every now and then but it really doesn't add anything, for me at least.

I agree, nicely put. It feels like the developers were holding my hand all the way thru the game and the "puzzles" are just silly gimmicks. The platforming is too easy, almost to the point it gets boring. I didn't really care for the leveling up system and the salvage crap either. They clearly looked at the financial success that the Uncharted series had and copied that concept instead of making a new TR game.. The magic is gone, i was disappointed. TR anniversary is still my absolute favorite.

Msdfail I didn't play the old ones but was really dissapointed in the new one, I heard it was gonna be complex and cool and deep, like an open world stealth thing where you have to avoid killing people, and everyone told me how AWESOME the previous ones were, but it was.... Not. Linear stuff (invisible walls, unclimbable stuff, etc) like that bugs the hell out of me. NOT an open world. This is 20-fucking-14 here. Plus the stealth itself was not the best either. I mean, it was OK. Like this game. Just not what I was expecting, not up to its hype. Solid rental (which is what I did anyway). The new TR is also solid rental material, too, BTW. Wouldn't replay it though.

***** The music is great, and I played the PC version which looks AMAZING. I didn't like the story. It's hard to say why.... It's not like the story in the old games was what kept you interested. But this seems like a different kind of game where they really WANTED the story to be rivetting, and it wasn't, you could have fast forwarded through the whole thing and still played fine. Which would be OK in an old TR game, where suddenly a T Rex or a flying mummy lady could pop out of nowhere and MURDERIZE you, but this game trades the bosses for suspense. Just a bunch of killing dudes. And a BOW? Come on (SOOOOOO Hunger Games). I would have been happier if they had done something original and made the whole game hand-to-hand, or have her make her own knives out of rocks or something, if they didn't want to give "girl Lara" the pistols yet. And again, I get why some people disagree and call this a story of growth, but she just seems so weak in this one. I /eyerolled plenty. The ONLY thing that gives me hope for the next game(s) is the end where she gets her dual pistols, that was a great nod to the old games and makes me think maybe when she comes back she will be the badass I remember. She isn't English enough though. But I still was very dissapointed that it was too easy, the puzzles were dumbtastic, you die like 10 times MAX, the bosses are not real bosses..... And since we're "going there", QTE? Come on. This isn't 2006 anymore. They're well done, to be sure. But there is WAY too much of it for my tastes. But again, it's wrong to call it a bad game. It's fun as a standalone. If they had called it anything else, I would be much more into it. But this is LARA! That's like a huge part of my childhood. /end fangirl rant

This game has epic gameplay, overall fun, music, stunning graphics, it is very immersive. the QTEs are annoying some times, but slightly less than many other games. Overall I agree with the 9 out of 10. Id degrade the game for logics: Lara falls uppon a stick in the beggining of the game, enough to cross her stomach side to side, and still goes thumbling and falling uppon things as normal without losing body strength, she also only complains of cold once, then shes in the middle of snow normally. She complains of hunger in the beginning of the game but never again. But the rest of the game itself for being a superproduction extremely well done is enough to make one suspend disbelief and ignore those logics fails and enjoy this epic badass game.

Game sucked. End of story. They lost all the charm of original games. Most of the complexity of the puzzles was replaced with pointless fights and QTE. They did not have a single multi-room puzzle. You pretty much get into area, spend 5 minutes killing scripted waves of enemies, then jump through simple and primitive puzzle and move on. How this can be liked by anyone who played original games, its beyond me. If i wanted to play fighting platform game, i would play AC. Hell, my wife outright refused to play it after watching me play because there was too much blood and fighting and she finished last 3 or 4 TR games.

I partially agree, but not because of the original games, just because I felt the points you made were all true whilst playing the game. I did enjoy the game, and thought in terms of combat and story it was good. But I didn't feel any level of difficulty whilst playing. The whole game is a breeze (I'm not saying this to be a dick, I'm saying it because I want more of a challenge!) As mentioned, the puzzles are brainless, you don't even have to think, you just use common sense. The QTE's ruin the immersion, and it was rare I had to think for myself. But these are just a few negatives in what is overall a good game. How people can claim its one of their top 5 games ever I will never understand though... It's not that good.

MozSFX my original post had nothing to do with original games except maybe me being spoiled with brilliant puzzles they had. i took my time to finish this one because i kept waiting for tutorial to end... TR is one of my favorite series and i really wanted to love this one... But i guess with sad death of level designer who did TR Underworld, they could not find someone with half a brain to get proper puzzles in place.

I played this game, it was completely, absolutely and a 100%... okay. Yeah, I mean, the gameplay is okay, the story is reused a million times, every one said that the game looks gorgeous but I really don´t, some times looks good, some times looks bad and overall, I felt that is just Uncharted Drake´s fortune all over again but with Lara Croft and kinda RPG. I know Tomb Raider appeared before than Uncharted, but since this is a Reboot, it looks that they were really inspired with Uncharted. But if I wrong, go ahead, prove if I commit a mistake and I´ll respect that, but that´s what I think of this game, is just okay. 6/10

I enjoyed the game for what it was but I gotta scratch my head at joe's rating here. The game is a 7/10 at the most. Stealth and combat are really flawed. Enemies somehow automatically know where you are after seeing one of their buddies get shot in the head with an arrow despite not seeing where it came from. Plus the guns are unrealistically weak as it literally takes half a dozen shots just to put one enemy down with the pistol, 3 with the arrow, 2 with the shotgun mid range it's practically useless and will hardly do any damage before the enemy shoots you to death , and a shitload with the rifle especially if you're shooting from far away seeing as how it kicks off target a lot when you fire. The some of the logic didn't make sense like the injury she received at the beginning that's a type of injury that you would bleed out and possibly die from (Joel in the last of us) but it doesn't really seem to bother her at all really. The story was okay but it was somewhat predictable. I'm a tomb raider fan but this game doesn't deserve that high of a rating tbh

I agree 100%. And I'd add that the hand-holding in particular killed all the atmosphere and immersion. The absence of a crouch button traded for auto crouching when an enemy encounter is ahead takes away any sense of being vulnerable (which ironically is the narrative the game starts with and throws it out the window the second Lara gets a gun). For me it was just another shooting gallery with a bow and some tedious shit thrown in between to slow your progress down (scaling white rock surfaces and white painted ledges to shoot a rope over at the shiny white rope pole oh boy thank god it's white wouldn't have found it otherwise). No challenge to be found anywhere (on hard), puzzles were a joke and Lara takes the price for first zero-dimensional character in writing history. It might not be an awful game, but for me, rating it as a reboot of a series that was about finding your way through at times convoluted levels and gunfights that consisted of hardly anything but side-flips, it fell completely flat.

I agree, except the reason the guns were not as powerful was due to the upgrade system. Allowing you too increase the damage, accuracy, or use add ons such as the grenade launcher as you move forward and progress.

Nathan Mitchell I felt the upgrade system was tacked on, because 'gotta have that in our game'. More and different guns would have done the job a lot better. Like getting a new bow every once in a while felt pretty rewarding. Well, being able to over-draw a compound bow rustled my archer-jimmies, but eh it's a video game. Also, collectibles to simulate content. I don't get why I am supposed to explore the game to find some vase with no in-game value.

Lara. LAH-RA not laura. I liked this game, even though it was more uncharted than tomb raider. The multiplayer pissed me off though, half the trophies are based on the multiplayer even though it's really a cheap knock off of the uncharted multiplayer. Also i didn't like how long it took lara to figure the plot twist, and the last complaint i have is that the puzzles i felt were too easy for a tomb raider game. i miss back in ps1 days when puzzles could stop you dead in your tracks, but then again idk if that would attract as many fans.

This game is absolutely incredible. It takes Lara from that "Teflon Beauty" concept and actually makes her a real character that you can feel for. The character redesign is a crescendo of good ideas. From ballooned out features to a beautiful, vulnerable, yet incredibly strong young woman (Camilla Ludington's voice work is incredible). The writing has also taken a turn for the better. Its gone from uninspired and lazy characters to a very emotional and gritty tone that makes you want to actually feel for the characters. Other characters could have been fleshed out more. And yes the mulltiplayer is atrocious, but I think most people know that it was going to float that way anyways. People need to stop comparing it to the old games which were nothing special really. The whole point of the remake was to get away from that, to a game that can be taken more seriously, and its done its job incredibly well.

Yeah I liked the game as a whole. I love the idea of Lara. The major gripe i had was the ease of the puzzles. Remake or not, you can still satisfy your older audience while using new mechanics to rake in a newer one.
