In 1896, after the death of Doc, Wyatt said in an article: "I found him a loyal friend and good company. He was a dentist whom necessity had made a gambler; a gentleman whom disease had made a vagabond; a philosopher whom life had made a caustic wit; a long, lean blonde fellow nearly dead with consumption and at the same time the most skillful gambler and nerviest, speediest, deadliest man with a six-gun I ever knew." I think Val Kilmer did a great job portraying him.

Most people roll their eyes during the scene where Wyatt runs out in the middle of the river. “That’s so unrealistic.” Crazy thing is, that’s one of the most true to life parts of the movie. Witnesses describe him standing in the middle of the river in a hail of gunfire completely untouched screaming “No! No! No!” His life really was the stuff legends are made of.

The thing about Doc Holiday is that if he hadn't been sick, he wouldn't have been as good as he was. He knew that his illness was terminal and didn't want it to be what kills him, so he would never back down from a fight in hopes that he would one day square of with someone that was better than him. His final words of "this is funny" was kind of an inside joke to himself. He always believed that he would die with his boots on. That is why he said that when he looked at his bare feet.

Ringo is believed to have committed suicide. He was found with a gunshot wound to the head and one round fired from his gun. Interestingly, the film addresses this by obviously having Doc shoot him in the head but then Johnny squeezes off a round into the dirt reflexively as he is stumbling down.

Doc Holliday had tuberculosis (aka "consumption") throughout this movie, just at varying stages. He probably drank a good bit (and used other substances) to dull the pain from it, but it didn't stop him from being as badass as he could be. But that's why he seems sickly in the movie, even when he wasn't drunk. He died from it in 1887; he was 36 years old.

@@orarinnsnorrason4614 The movie is full of inaccuracies, here are a few. The movie depicted Wyatt Earp wanting to stay out of Law Enforcement, but the real Wyatt Earp ran for county Sherriff, and lost. The movie only talked about three Earp brothers being in Tombstone, when in fact there was five of them there. Two of the Earp brothers, Warren and James, rode with Wyatt on his vendetta ride. Lastly, the shootout between Johnny Ringo and Doc Holiday, the problem with that was when Ringo was killed Doc Holiday was over 600 miles away in Colorado. The official ruling, Johnny Ringo frequently threatened to commit suicide, so it is believed that he shot himself. What is going for the movie, save for it being a well produced and enjoyable piece of work. The depiction of the gunfight at the Ok Corral, is considered to be one of the most accurate depictions ever done for the silver screen. All the other films before it often had people getting shot who were not even there, and the whole event taking forever, while the actual gunfight lasted around 30 seconds.

Just one correction: this is not a spaghetti western. "Spaghetti Western" refers to westerns made by Italians in the 1960s and 70s and which were popularized by most famously by Sergio Leone. The genres are fairly different, which is why it's not really fair to compare this movie to Leone's work.

If you turn on closed captions on the DVD, Blu-Ray, etc, they read, 'huckleberry.' In fact the ONLY place where it says hucklebearer is the internet where many people have bought into the Mandela Effect.

In reality…When Wyatt killed curly bill…it was down hill. Wyatt had the high ground (no obi-wan pun intended) and then shot curly bill with 2 shotgun blasts that nearly cut his body in half. Wyatt said doc holiday was the fastest gunslinger he’s ever seen in his time.

Bro, not only did Doc spin both guns while holding his tin cup, but he spun each one in a different direction at the same time. One overhand, one underhand. It impressed the hell out of me when I slowed it down and saw that.

In the old west, it was a bit of an "honor" or "distinction" to die "with your boots on" (i.e in a gunfight as opposed to dying in bed from illness) I know others have commented on Doc Hollday's last words (in the movie and IRL) referencing his surprise that he was doing the latter rather than the former. My purpose is not to repeat that info But in the real Tombestone there is a graveyard called "Boot Hill" (yes, the cemetery dates from that time period and still exists). "Boot Hill" is reserved for to those who died "with their boots on" (it's where the men the Earps shot in the gunfight at the OK coral are buried I believe) If you re-watch near the beginning when we and the Earps both first drive in Tombestone you catch a glimpse of "Boot Hill" cemetery, (or a replication) and it's most famous headstone (or again, possibly a replication) "Here lies Lester Moore Four slugs from a .44 No Les, No Moore."

ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS MOVIE. *oh and by the way* Doc tricked Wyatt into giving him his badge to be able and go and have a shootout with Johnny Ringo. He also over-exaggerated his sickness so he can snap off and kill ringo since he knew Wyatt would go and duel Johnny.

I just came across this reaction and figured I'd add in a little bit of historical trivia: After the events of Tombstone and the OK Corral, Wyatt Earp spent his twilight years in Los Angeles when the film industry was picking up. He wanted a movie made to show his side of the story regarding Tombstone, and he ended up spending a lot of time as a consultant on the early Western movies. He worked very closely with a young production assistant named Marion Robert Morrison, who he told all his stories and exploits to. These stories inspired the young Marion to pursue his dreams of becoming an actor himself. His given name wasn't quite star material, however, so he took the stage name of John Wayne.

Young Guns 1& 2 are also really good. They tell the story of the Lincoln County War in New Mexico. And Showcase "William H. Bonnie" aka "Billy the Kid" also "Wild Bill" about "William Hickock" with Jeff Bridges is good. Kevin Costner is also amazing in "Open Range". Along with his Modern Day Western Series "Yellowstone" and the Prequel "1883" are worth checking out.

I appreciate your thorough reaction. I realize KZbin is not letting you guys properly react to movies anymore (well, posting your reaction, I mean), but I like that you let the reaction run to 40, 45 minutes so we can see your reaction to the cool bits. :) I just watched a new reaction to "Shawshank Redemption" elsewhere and it was only 10 minutes long. No point to that! Don't be afraid to go long with classics - keep it going!

The highlights is not the gunfights but more the scenes where the brothers and Doc just shows us how badass they are without firing a single shot. Sadly Doc passed away all alone. A story about how this film shaped my life…This movie came out when I was around 6 years old and my grandfather bought it for me on VHS after taking me to the theater to see it. I literally wore the film inside the VHS out due to my constant watching and rewinding the movie so many times 😂 I remember putting it in one of those old fashioned VHS rewinders that you could buy separately from the VHS player back in the early 90s. I remember crying because it chewed the tape up and I was just heartbroken and forced my grandparents to take me to Walmart the very next morning and begging them to buy me 2 copies that way I had a spare if it got messed again 😂😂😂 My grandfather always spoiled me so of course he said yes, and I’m being dead serious when I say that I was quite literally the happiest chubby 6 year old on the planet 🌎 Once my son was old enough to watch it and enjoy it like I did as a little tot, I sat him down with a huge bucket of popcorn and we watched it together. I didn’t tell him that we were watching the very movie I named him after (his first name is Wyatt and his middle name is Morgan, which is Wyatt’s younger brothers name)…so when they finally said his name in the movie he just turned to me and with the biggest eyes and the widest grin he said “Wowww mama they named a movie after meee!!!!!!”😅 Then I had to explain to him that he was actually named after the movie characters, and I thought that might make him sad, but it actually made him smile even bigger and say “I’m named after a REAL LIFE cowboy 🤠?!?!…wow thanks ma!” At that moment, my heart was filled with happiness ❤ a silly thing to get so happy over, but it’s a moment I treasure and always will.

Everything that happened in this film is pretty true to life. Wyatt did walk out in the middle of the river and kill Curly Billl. While Curly Bills shotgun blast missed Wyatt. The OK Coral fight was taken from life with things like where Doc used the shotgun to scare the horse then shot the Cowboy in the side. Ike did run up to Wyatt in the middle of it who in fact did say “either get to fighting or get out of the way’ (paraphrased) they did go on a revenge kick against the cowboys after Morgan was killed which was called “ the Earp vendetta Ride” and also killed Frank Stilwell at the train station in real life, and much more. However Doc did not kill Johnny Ringo it’s believed he died form suicide. The reason Doc looks at his feet just before he dies and says “isn’t that funny.” Is because he always thought he would die with his boots on.

Doc never does things by halves. He knows he's dying and he knows he's a great gunfighter and an equally great cardplayer. Everything he does is a self-destructive reaction to his own mortality which is slowly slipping away every day. He wants to die with his boots on.
