Fun Fact: The scene when Alan Rickman gets dropped out of the window, they had him up above an air bag and they said "we'll count to three and drop you", but they dropped him on "2" so that look of surprise on his face is genuine. Also, prior to "Die Hard", Bruce Willis was best-known for a TV show called "Moonlighting" where he played a private detective with Cybill Shephard and the same kind hard-boiled snark he displayed in the this movie. Die Hard really made his career.

But as a kid I remember him being an action star was a joke since he was so goofy on Moonlighting. No one could see him in an action movie. Back then you had to be huge and muscular (Schwarzenegger and Stallone). He was probably the first actor that totally jumped genres and nailed it. Same with Michael Keaton.

I have always thought it was because of the dialog and the plot and that they didi not have CGI back then. They had to rely on practical effects and did not have all the wondrous things that they can do with CGI today. So they had to make sure that the plot, action and story kept the audience interested.

Yippee-ki-yay is a cowboy exclamation along the lines of something like “woohoo!” and also used as nonsense noises when herding cattle just to get them moving along. So in this movie they refer back to its usage by Roy Rogers who was a famous TV cowboy from back in the black and white TV era. Hans calls John McClane a Cowboy and John responds that he was partial to Roy Rogers as a kid and then later uses the “yippee ki yay” with MF tagged on the end. References that use the phrase with the swearing at the end are referring to this movie. Without it they may be referring back to the original cowboy origins.

It's the little things that seperate a generation. My Boomer father grew up watching tv westerners. There's just no way as an American growing up you've never heard or seen a scene on TV of a cowboy adventurer shouting for his horse. "HI HO SILVER" or "Yip Yip!" or the ever classic "Yeeeee Haw!!!!" CLASSIC western expressions. I guess Bruce got it in his head that if you're gonna keep calling me a cowboy I'm going take the liberty of sarcastically playing the part during a perfect time to squeeze in a dry joke after the heightened adrenaline of killing someone. Like in Austin Powers when he wouldn't stop making one liner's after they killed the henchmen in the shark tank. It's just gotta be done.

Looking around a bit. 1936 movie Rhythm on the Range starring Bing Crosby. Bing sings a song called "I'm an old cowhand (from the Rio Grande)", written by Johnny Mercer. But since McClane likes Roy Rogers and he sang that song too that is probably what that character is referencing. That's some old stuff. With reruns I've seen some black and white shows before but don't think anything that old like Roy Rogers.

It was not done on purpose, the actor just looked like Jeffrey Dhamer with his blonde hairs, haircut and glasses. Die Hard came out in 1988 and Dhamer crimes (and public notoriety) were known only in 1991.

Was just about to make this observation myself. To tag on to that, it's possible--however, unlikely--that Dahmer saw the popular film and modeled his look after the character. That's really the only possible relation.

It's really just a somewhat popular look for some guys in the 80's. Dhamer didn't come up with it. It wasn't unique. Long blind hair and big rimmed glasses is late 70's and 80's look.

29:02 Hans is cool, calm, and collected during all the violence and all the adversity from McClane. He only loses his shit when someone challenges his intellect and downplays how good he is at what he does. It wasn't that he was being subservient, it was just that his massive ego reflexively cared more about how *_fast_* he got in Holly's face over how it looked in getting there. I love that character moment 🔥 No, it's not a typical "villain" thing to do, but it says a lot about his motivations and flaws, making him more interesting and well-developed.

It is a christmas movie. -when I was 20 yrs old taking english education at the highest level I did a whole written assignment about DieHard and why I considered it a christmas movie. I did a full analysis of the movie and then I had a whole chapter about traditional x-mas movies and what their common denominators were. Lastly I drew paralels to different scenes and underlying themes in Die Hard. And last a lengthy conclusion as to why Die Hard is definetly an x-mas movie, allthough it is undoubtedly wrapped in untraditional paper! I got top grade! LOL The teacher was convinced by my arguements and breakdown of the movie.

Now that you've seen the ur-Christmas action movie, I strongly suggest watching the ur-New Year's Eve action movie, the original THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE from 1972 with Gene Hackman and a huge cast of '70s stars.

In the States, many say "Merry Christmas to you and yours" rather than to mention family specifically. 1. As Hanna suggests, some people do not have families or there is drama with them at the time. 2. It can be perceived as a bit TOO personal to mention someone's family unless you really/actually know that person well. "To you and yours" can mean family, friends, people who are important to you and is far less intrusive.

The term "Yippee-Ki-Yay" seems to be a shortened pronunciation of "Yippee-Yi-Yo-Ki-Yay" ..... A refrain from the 1930's song, "I'm An Old Cowhand." It was often used as an expression of exaltation and happiness, much like the phrase "Woohoo" is used today. Here is a version of the song, being sung by famous cowboy actor, Roy Rogers (John McClane - "Just call me Roy"). kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJLKomZ5nLiYaqM

6:34 younger people watching this film always give her a hard time about switching her name to her maiden name. I don't think younger people understand how different the 80s was regarding women's working rights. Her character even mentions why in the film but most younger people wouldn't pick up on it. The 80s was when there was still strong prejudices against women seeking high level positions in executive roles. And stigma attached to being a divorced woman and/or single mother. Enough to effect employment chances. And on top of that her character is working for a Japanese Company. Japanese companies can still be very conservative even these days! In the 80s Japan was a major world tech country/producer and a lot of our electronics, white goods and cars were being made in Japan. Getting a job with a Japanese company in the 80s had great potential. Her character had very good reasons to keep her marital status under wraps considering the historical context. But they make up at the end of the film ❤️

I know I'm really late to the game buuuuut, just gotta say this...Die Hard was made in the 80's, and Jeffrey Dahmer didn't do his thing until the 90's. So, no, that badguy is not modeled after him.

3:20 Hannah's actually spot on here though (or at least, it's historically precedented symbolism). "Dying" was a European Renaissance euphemism for orgasm. For example, John Dowland's late 1500s "Come Again": "To see, to hear, to touch, to kiss, to die with thee again in sweetest sympathy"

Bruce Willis invented "Yippee Ki-Yay" and made it famous. Like Schwarzeneggers "I'll be back", it is Bruce's signature-line. Every other movie which use that line, are reffering to him.

If Die Hard was made today think how shit it would be. Firstly it wouldnt even be an 18 certificate, it would be a 12. Action scenes would be bland - CGI etc. Woke casting etc. Poor script. Thank God for the 1980s.

31:50 Actions do speak louder than words. No question. _And yet_ actions aren't the same as words. Sometimes the words still need to be said. I mean, he said it himself: "She's heard me say 'I love you' a thousand times but she's never heard me say, 'I'm sorry.'" Hannah's not crazy for pointing out that John still needs to apologize. Accountability, mate! Even saving someone's life is not the same as owning your past actions and taking responsibility for them.

Bruce Willis was not an action movie actor, this movie opened it up for him. He was more a comedic actor on TV. Yippee Ki Yay is kinda like "Yahoo" or "whoopie", happy expression.

Another fun fact, or not so fun... Bruce Willis suffers two-thirds partial hearing loss in his left ear from this movie after firing blanks too close to his ear that were already extra loud when he was filming the scene where he shoots one of the villains through the table.
