Wyatt wading out into the middle of the creek while firing out a shotgun in a hail of bullets while screaming "No!" actually happened according to eyewitnesses.

Great characters and lines, but Val Kilmer’s performance as Doc Holiday is next level.

Fun reaction to a really great western. Things that really happened: Doc Holliday's girlfriend, Big Nose Kate, stuck with him for many years, nursed him through his worst bouts of illness, and though it wasn't shown in the movie, she was caring for him when he died, as well. Doc Holliday was, by all reports, as fast and deadly with a gun as depicted. Wyatt Earp's wife Maddie was addicted to Laudenum, an OTC tincture of opium, and she did die of an overdose. It was mentioned in the narration at the end. Wyatt Earp and the actress did marry later and stayed together the rest of their lives. Ike Clanton did inexplicably survive all that crap and eventually got killed by someone else. The gunfight at the OK Corral did happen, but the actual causes and specific who-shot-who are disputed to this day. The building randomly on fire in the background was part of the real event but had nothing to do with the gunfight. The river gunfight where Wyatt walked into the crossfire but didn't get hit did actually happen. He was lucky that day. Virgil Earp did continue in law enforcement. Also, almost all the characters with speaking roles are depicting real people, and the main characters were as famous in their own day as suggested in the movie. Criticism of the criticism: The Love Stuff: All the Wyatt boys basically married show-girls and/or prostitutes. That was mildly hinted at in the dialogue. So if you thought the marriage dynamics were a little less than romantic, that might have something to do with it. These may have been passions and solid relationships, but they weren't traditional romances. The lack of help for Maddie's obvious addiction: Yeah, welcome to the 19th century. Especially, welcome to being a woman with a health issue in the 19th century. Thing to remember - drugs like opium, heroin, and cocaine were legal in those days. They were prescription or OTC medications. And being a drug addict was treated as a medical issue, and frankly, it was really treated at all only for rich men. Everyone else just had to learn to cope. Triangle: Wyatt actually did not cheat on Maddie. He fell in love while still married, but he didn't follow up on it until after Maddie died. Remember, the closing narration told us she died very soon after leaving Tombstone, so probably while Wyatt was still murdering the Cowboys. And for the lack of love in his marriage with Maddie - yeah, drug addiction does that to relationships. Law Enforcement Confusion: The multiple layers of town, county, and federal law enforcement in the frontier territories back then, led to total jurisdictional confusion and paralysis. Add corruption to that and you get the Wild West.

Wyatt and Doc also had a falling out sometime after the vengeance ride so the meet up at the end didn’t happen.

In terms of the historical accuracy of the movie, it’s pretty close to the actual events. The only real difference is that the movie compresses events to a much shorter time period than the actual events

Michael studied and practised for months to be able to do the gun tricks. Val consulted a linguist to learn how to talk like a southern aristocrat of the day. Everyone in the movie was committed to making it a real thing.

"I'm your Huckleberry." Western slang, got to love it. Val Kilmer will forever be my Doc Holiday. 🔫 🤠 Fun Fact: Doc Holiday was actually a dentist in the Indianapolis area (not the south) when he got DB, or Consumption as it was called back then. He was told the dry air of the west would slow the disease. Doc Holiday became a successful gambler and gunfighter. Yet despite his high-risk lifestyle, he died a very painful death in bed while his lungs tore themselves apart. Not a way for anyone to die.

When Doc was twirling his tea cup around like it was a gun... He had instantly memorized the gun flourish, and repeated it with his tea cup... It is a very intimidating scene especially if you understand the Latin.

It's kind of funny or sad that Ike's father was the original leader of the gang he was in. Curly Bill became leader instead of him after his father passed.

I’m late to the party. In all honesty, Wyatt did nothing wrong in this “love triangle”. Yes, he found the actress attractive and yes they went for a horseback ride. They didn’t hold hands, kiss or have sex….. he’s only guilty of attraction. And after spending the day with the actress went to his wife and tried to get her to live the dream with him…. And get out of Tombstone before he cheats. That’s the way I saw it anyway. The fist kiss with the actress was after his wife died. His wife died two weeks after leaving Tombstone from a drug overdose. And, to be fair, there was no known help for addiction back then. All he could do was encourage her to stop, which he knew she wouldn’t do.

The voiceover said Maddie died of her drug use shortly after leaving Tombstone. And Wyatt then married the actress and spent like 50 years with her, so I think that's why she was included. Great western, stellar performances, impressive facial hair( :

Fun reaction vid. If you look into the making of this film, there were some daunting challenges from the very start of the production with a director in over his head. Kurt Russell essentially singlehandedly saved the production. This was only recognized at the time by the other actors and crew there on set at the time. Love to see you be exposed to some more classic westerns. Now I know a bunch of people are going to tell you to watch “Unforgiven”. And yes that is an essential film to watch. But I’m going to advise, hold off on “Unforgiven”. You’ll have a much greater appreciation for that film if you’ve seen a bunch of other westerns first and become more familiarized with the genre and its tropes. Westerns you got to see. The Man With No Name Trilogy. Directed by Sergio Leone. Starring Clint Eastwood. These are the spaghetti westerns that Eastwood a star. “A Fistful of Dollars” “For a Few Dollars More” “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly” And some classic westerns that were very popular and very loved when they came out. These westerns have been painfully neglected by many of the movie reaction channels. But they are cherished and loved. And also based on real characters and true events you may even have heard of, as you had heard of Doc Holiday. “Young Guns” 1 and 2 Have a better one.

This movie has a great cast but Val Kilmer steals the show as Doc Holiday. He was fantastic. If I'm not mistaken there was a scene filmed of the death of Wyatt's wife from an overdose but it was cut for time.

I really respect your sense of loyalty/monogamy/ faithfulness that comes through in your critique of the “love story” I respect it, cant fault you for it. As others have said 1) Wyatt didn’t really “move” on any feelings he had until Maddie had died of a drug overdose. 2) what can you say, He wasn’t a perfect person, though the movie glamorizes him as a hero 🤷‍♀️. But i do get what you’re saying and it says something about your character that it rubs you the wrong way.

Shortly after this movie came out, Kevin Costner starred in Lawrence Kasdan's film "Wyatt Earp", which attempts to be more dramatic, detailed about What Earp's life, and historically accurate, though both films aren't exactly that precise with the facts. It's a good flick too though, but people to tend to like this one better because it's more fun and flashier, I guess. I like them both, but they're kind of apples and oranges in their style. You might want to check it out though. There have been several other films based on the subject over the years, such as "Gunfight at the OK Corral" with Kirk Douglas.

Kevin Costner doesn’t have much range as an actor. I barely made it through his monotone narration of Dances With Wolves. I think that’s why this movie is preferred. The acting was top notch and Kilmer honestly deserved an Oscar for this one.

@@jeanine6328 to each their own. I love Kurt Russell, but the same argument can be made against him, and he's literally been acting since he was a child. I also have always loved Val Kilmer, but I said this had a little more of a flair for a reason. His performance was outstanding, but it also wasn't realistic. It was fun good theatre, particularly if you're only frame of reference is everything being cartoonishly in your face for you to understand it because subtlety is lost on you, but I don't know if you saw the documentary he made about himself a couple years ago, but ends up he's a beautiful but kind of out there guy. It's not so surprising that he's as elaborate and entertaining, but in way that's unfortunately not as exciting as real life, particularly when dealing with historical fact. Oh and by the way, Dances with Wolves is one of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen in my life, it was nominated for like 10 academy awards, and won 7, including a beat picture and best director for Kevin Costner, so if it wasn't as vibrant for you, just stick to the anime or Disney movies you normally like. No worries.

@@jeanine6328 maybe Val did deserve an academy award for his performance, and it's been so many years since I've seen it, but I'll bet you anything that Denis Quaid's Doc Holiday was more like the real thing, and neither one of them are true at all
