1:00 When you said you grew up as someone who felt like an outsider, didn't belong and didn't fit in... yeah man. I feel the EXACT SAME WAY, and feel grateful for KZbin and digital media, helping me come out of my shell a little more. I haven't even started everything I want to do yet, but I'm doing a ton of research on all of it, learning the gear more, etc. I just wanted to say thanks for such a heartfelt moment in your video... just discovering your channel a few hours ago, you're becoming one of my favorite videography/tech people, ever. You have a great energy... enthusiastic and kind (I think I bring that energy too, I'm just awkward as hell and the pandemic hasn't helped much, ha). Look forward to digging through the rest of your channel and learning a lot. If you ever might want to collaborate (musically) or do some co-hosted tech/nerd video, I'm all about it. Thanks, Tom! :)

Congratulations. I was fortunate to come across your channel, love it, especially your videos. Your videos are very informative. I’ve always had an interest in music, sound engineering, photography and video creation, but far far from professionally perfect. It’s just a hobby for me. Being a gadget accessory freak which also feeds my interest, that,s another reason your videos appeal to me. I have created some videos in years past but your channel has inspired me to step it up a notch and hopefully bring it to the next level. Vlogging, podcast, anything to keep it fun and interesting at least to me. Even though at times it keeps me from fully enjoying my time with friends while I’m busy capturing the moment with all my cameras surrounding my friends at events. But it is a way to archive good times with friends, which I’m sure they appreciate seeing later even though they were subjects of my attempt to make stars of them at that time. I have already made some purchases as a result of your very informative video reviews, so kudos to you and your hard work. FYI Your choice of your studio colors on your thumbnails are very appealing, they’re very calm and soothing. I feel they invite people to click on them. Either way, it works for me here I am. Keep going and growing, I’ll be watching for more videos, I appreciate them very much. Franklin

Never woulda thought of that. I'm here watching a ton of your content today because I've been asked to teach digital drawing for the UCLA Masters of Interior Design extension program, and the fact that you're teaching was a happy discovery. I want to get some more engaging production going on from this point forward with at least 3 diff camera angles: 1) overhead w/ iPhone 11 (what I use now), 2) talking head shot w/ f1.4 or 2.4 lens (whatever's necessary to produce awesome out of focus effect you do so well) and also 3) a slider shot for close ups of the pencil while drawing, which could be amazing for close ups (see: 30x40 workshop videos). I listen to the Video Creators podcast (Tim Schmoyer) and you are firing on all cylinders according to their recommendations, plus I'm just really enjoying your relaxed style. 14:10 I found that just about any kind of light will work. You can use anything from really good photographic lights to household light bulbs. You can get very warm light to pretty cool (blueish) Daylight depending on the light you use. I did mostly still photography before I started doing video, so I have strobe lighting for stills. the modeling lights work for video.

Yep! The biggest issue I’ve found is dealing with flicker from some LED bulbs, so it just takes a bit of trial and error to find the right ones. But there are so many awesome and affordable options out there!

Wonderful video! Have you made a video about the cost-saving benefits of using the EOS RP vs the EOS R? I'd just be using it for KZbin videos. Also, do you save the video DIRECTLY do your external hard drive from your camera? Or does it go from your EOS to your computer?
@tombuck4 жыл бұрын
I haven't used the RP, but it seems terrific, especially for the price. The only thing keeping me from getting one is that it takes a different battery than my R and 6D. I like everything to use the same battery system when possible. And I save the files directly to a project-specific folder on either my desktop or my external hard drive (I have a specific work flow video coming soon).

I’ve had it for years. My wife has one in her office and we have one in the garage too. 👍

@@tombuck Was also looking at the Husky adjustable bench as well. You can crank the height up or down if needed and comes with casters. 4' or 6' length option. I started listening today to your podcast you do with Peter. Quite enjoying it.

I always return to so many of your vids as I continue to prepare for my studio space to be done. Your editing timeline is 3840x1920?
@tombuck2 жыл бұрын
Yes! I like the slightly wider aspect ratio, and it looks great on phones. I'm working on a new studio tour video that should be out in the next few weeks, so hopefully that'll help you out a bit or give you some ideas!

Wow, you are gona have to hire staff and quit your day job if this continues! Nice! I think you have probably touched on it, but what are a few first things I could change/improve to make my videos better? You probably have a stat that shows your subscription growth, that probably looks cool?
@tombuck4 жыл бұрын
Hey Jim! The stats are definitely fun to see. I had one video go semi-viral last year, and that created a spike that kind of skewed the charts, but now things are more even and heading upwards! For your videos, they’re clear and have good audio- those are really the two biggest production points to hit. I love how you clearly explain concepts and make everything understandable, even to someone like me. My biggest suggestion would be to make really eye catching thumbnails if you have the time. But it seems like you’re on the move! Gotta get ready for a 1000 special pretty soon! 😬

Tom, thanks for the critique! That is my biggest limitation, I am shooting with my iPhone and a simple earbud mic. I prefer to get it in a single take so I don’t have any editing to do post. Really impressed how fast your channel is growing! Your videos are a pleasure to watch!

Hey there. I love your style of shooting. I also use an eos r with sigma 24mm 1.4. I was shooting Sony with their 24mm 1.4 and I’m not used to grading the canon yet. What picture profiles/settings to you film on and what is your grading process like?
@tombuck4 жыл бұрын
Hey Aaron! Thanks for the kind words. The magic of Canon is how good things look straight out of the camera. I just use the “natural” picture profile and do very little grading (maybe a few exposure adjustments, but very minimal).

thanks for this educational video, may i ask what software do you use for the screen recording ? thanks
@tombuck3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words! I just use Quicktime for screen recordings, nothing too fancy. I like it because it can record at a high resolution which lets me crop in on parts of the screen during editing.

It’s one of the cheapest office chairs that IKEA sells 😁 But it’s really comfy and works great.

Hey man, this is probably the 3rd time I have came back to watch this video. I love seeing how others are creating their content. Do you have another video where you explain more about why you use 3840x1920 resolution for your videos? I’m doing screen record tutorials. I used to just grab a 1920x1080 window of my screen for KZbin videos. Why 2:1 instead of 16:9? Is it for better screen utilization on mobile? Thanks! 🙂
@tombuck4 жыл бұрын
I have exactly the video you’re looking for kzbin.info/www/bejne/en2xlWh4rLp-p9E Basically, it looks better on mobile now that most phones use 2:1, and I personally like the way it forces you to compose shots. I’ve been doing it for almost a year now and still like it. It’s a small thing that people might not notice outright, but I think it makes a difference.

Thanks for the tour. Can you tell me how you set up your light? Is your key light point down at 45 degree from top and 45 degree from the side. Is your light turned on 100% max? What’s your iso? What’s the dimensions of your room? Thanks
@tombuck4 жыл бұрын
I keep my key light at 85% brightness with my camera ISO at 160 and my lens at 1.4. The light has a soft box on it and is pointed away from me angled upwards towards a white wall/ceiling. It’s the FalconEyes RX-18, which is ridiculously bright. Full tour video coming next week 👍

Hey Tom, I discovered your channel a couple of days ago. In this video from not too long ago you are celebrating 10,000-you are almost at 100,000 now. Well done, that is an amazing effort. No bad jokes in this video, however? What happened? I was a high school maths teacher a lifetime ago. Do you kids know that you are a youtuber?
@tombuck3 жыл бұрын
Hey Scott! It was around the time of this video that I realized my dumb jokes SHOULD be in my videos (I mean, they're one of the main ways I built relationships with students haha). I stopped teaching last school year, but some of my students knew about my channel. I never hid it, but I also never actively promoted it- it was kind of just a thing that was out there. 😬

Thank you. I was really interested in your info. You use so many specialized terms and it took so much time looking them up in a dictionary. I made it through though. Have you ever done a video on an iPhone to iMovie for your you tube channel? How about a the knowledge on how to? I live in So Cal too. Altadena, Ca area.

Just found your channel - good stuff. Curious: what do you teach in high school? Do any of your students watch your channel? :)
@tombuck3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jed! Last year was my last year teaching, but I taught a Digital Media pathway for 9 years and 2 years of English before that. I never hid my channel from my students, but I also never promoted it to them. It did give me a bit of "street cred" as a Digital Media teacher though 😁
