Since 2003 the Rode PSA1 has been an iconic and ultra reliable choice for a mic boom arm, but now there's a new boom in the room: the PSA1+. Let's see how the two arms compare and whether or not the new version is worth the extra money.
This video is not sponsored, but Rode did send me the PSA1+ as a gift at no cost. I'm not obligated to make a video about it or say anything specific about it, and no one gets to see this video before I publish it.

Tom, I am from Europe, and I have the Q2U Samson mic that weighs 318 grams. Can I still use this mic with the PSA1+, or will it be too light for it? Also, would the mic be too light for the older PSA1 in case I cannot get the more modern PSA1+ ?

What I am missing is the option to completely conceal the XLR kabel inside the arm of the original PSA1. If you use the mount that requires to drill a hole in your desk then you can run the cable trough the arm under your desk. This looks a lot better then attaching the cable to the outside of the arm with Velcro. The big new base plate might be fitted to existing big holes in your desk but these holes are typical completely at the back of your desk and most likely not at the most optimal place to mount the boom arm. For the best result you really have to dril a hole in your desk and run the XLR cable inside the boom arm.

The type of free product plqcement Rode attempts on this unit is unacceptable and their justification is an insult to any professional youtuber. A brand on the frame is worth money.

I'm glad that the only problem with this boom arm is the branding. I understand that it would be a deal breaker for content creators who use webcams (which I'm sure is most of them), but as someone who doesn't do any of that, it is simply a non-issue, so I'll probably end up getting it. Wonderful review, by the way. 10/10 review quality.

I thought it was important to talk about the branding since it is something super noticeable, but sometimes it seems like that discussion has dominated the comments. It's really an awesome arm overall and I've been using mine daily since I got it.

I just bought two of the PSA+ arms to replace two cheaper arms I bought before I got the PSA1 and realized how great it was. I haven't set them up yet, but I actually like the way the RODE logo looks. And with a lot of podcasts being livestreamed to KZbin, it makes sense that they would want bold logos on there to help promote their products. To me, the logos are totally fine. If it was a brand I didn't love, I could see that bothering me. But RODE makes probably the best and most interesting accessories and products. There are a lot of great brands out there but RODE consistently impresses me with their solutions to problems.

You can get the black on black affect for the logo by going over the letters with a black permanent marker. It doesn't affect the neoprene and leaves a subtle reflective surface. Again, the branding was the only thing about the arm I didn't like and now it's perfect.

Twisting the microphone to attach it has always been a pet peeve of mine because it feels really risky and I've dropped microphones before because I'm trying to take it off my stand quickly but whenever there's a separate locking mount, it really calms my nerves about dropping things (which I do way too much 😂)

7:47 YES! 100% agreed. Especially that new one is a pretty hefty piece of metal that requires some machining. And aside from that it adds weight to shipping. I feel like the mounting should be an option. So you can buy the arm and at check-out select either the clamp or the desk-hole-thing (and the price depends on the selected option).

GREAT REVIEW !!! Very detailed explanation! I personally have the DecTron 20x18" Friction Series (Boom) Arm and it's made here in the USA and ultra durable and can hold up to 5+ lbs. So it can easily handle a heavy camera with a large lens. Not that I need for it to hold that much weight, but this arm is the highest quality, that is nearly indestructible. Works on Friction and holds it's place - No need for the loosening or tightening of knobs, a one time setup is all that is required to dial in the arms weight supporting capabilities. With no springs or rivets to loosen over time, this precision engineered arm will provide years of maintenance free performance. The retail on this is $339, but I was fortunate to get 3 on eBay for $69 each. An amazing deal! Keep in mind you'll need a pretty thick solid wood desk or a very sturdy wall mount (that you can purchase from DecTron for $69). You can get a Heil WM-1, if you can find one for around $29. All in all, I LOVE THIS ARM!, but the RODE PSA1+ comes in a close second. Again, great review.

After making the video, I went back at it with the solvent and was able to completely remove all of the logos. I just used A LOT of solvent on each one and it was pretty easy. I rubbed them off using an alcohol wipe and it probably took about 15 minutes per logo. A paper towel will tear apart and a regular towel or brush can damage the sleeve, so a wipe works best. Now it literally looks like nothing was ever there, it's awesome!

The way how R0DE is showing their logos definitely is overkilled. As soon as I received and tested this new arm, I definitely will use a black marker to paint it over! That means it will defeat their purpose by putting their gigantic logos everywhere on the sleeves. Indeed, they should reduce the size of the logos shown on the sleeves and put lesser logos or may be even change the color to grey.

I'm a R0DE fan and I'm buying this arm. Thanks for the comprehensive review. I wonder if the branded covering can be turned inside out. I mean, if the cable stays go through a hole, can you take off the covering and then pull one end through the other end to reverse it? If not, then, for me, I would just cut off the covers. It's not like bare arms have never been seen before. And, thinking further, I wonder if a hot and close hair dryer and some tweezers will let you slowly pull away the vinyl letters.

If they made the padding removable, it would definitely be great. Not only because of the branding logo, but also make it easier to clean/wash should it get dirty at some point since it is still some sort of fabric that can get stained. Also, making it easier to remove allows consumers to purchase replacement when it is worn out or even a 3rd party padding(maybe even able to DIY design the padding to including you own logo or design). But I think they are doing that to prevent existing PSA1 users to purchase the new padding to be use on the original PSA1.

I've used Rode mics professionally for many years, some might call me a 'fan boy' and I'd take that. I don't mind the branding on the arm, especially as my arm is rarely in shot anyway - but a bit of black paint or sharpie deals with it well enough, or vinyl remover as you did.

I went back after this and used a lot more and was able to remove all the logos with no evidence that they’d ever been there. I put the solvent on the sleeve and then rubbed it with an alcohol wipe. Tougher cloths or brushes can damage the material, so this was the safest way.

I purchased the Rode PSA1+ last week as of this comment. I reviewed a lot of boom arms and I settled on the Rode PSA1+ and I'm very happy with my purchase. The quality of materials used are premium in feel and use. I have the Rode Podmic and, no matter what position I put the boom arm in, it stays put and does not drop down like my old boom arm. The option to use the desk grommet is a nice option If you choose to to go that route when setting up PSA1+. Side note I also purchased the RodeProCaster 2 and it has leveled up my podcast. Now to what some think is an eye sore, the Rode logo on both sides of the neoprene covering, it doesn't bother me at all but I think it's extreme to cut off the neoprene just because you don't like the logo. The other thing about the PSA1+ is you can remove the mounting pole so you can route your XLR cable through the top mount for a clean look. That's my two cents for what it's worth. B"H.

Great video! I'm late to the party, but I've just picked this up and managed to get a workaround on covering up the white logos that looks so good! I got some high-quality, hi-tac vinyl letters printed in both matt grey and matt black. I've tried both, and honestly, you can't tell they are vinyl stickers. They also stick perfectly to the existing vinyl print as well. I offset the logo by around 0.75mm to ensure there was no white showing from the existing logo, and if you take your time, the results are fantastic! I actually ended up going with the matt black as this was the more subtle look. It's well worth giving this a try if you're not keen on the white logos!

This is probably the last part of my audio setup I need to upgrade. I had a cheap neewer arm for the longest time and I watched a review saying the innogear arm was better than the psa1, but it is super rigid. It was just designed similarly to the the psa1 but it feels as rigid as the neewer. I love how fluid the psa1 is so I need to just purchase one already instead of fighting with my current arm to get it where I need it positioned. Well what you were always able to do and what I have done with my psa1 was cutting the xlr cable, pass it trough the entire arm (and yes it also would fit through the desk mount because the metal that goes into the desk clamp is hollow) and soulder it together with the connector at the end which results in having a cableless microphone arm which looks amazing and you don’t have to use the just 3 included velcro straps. In my opinion the psa1+ with these sleeves looks worse than the old one but has nice and new features/improvements over the old one especially the actual microphone mount, really annoying with the tightening knobs. Nice and informative video btw, I have watched many of your videos and you kinda talked my into audio technology and especially microphones. Thank for all of that

The branding worked. People are talking about them, which draws attention and expands the number of people who now know about their boom arms. $2.00 in materials resulted in what could have cost much, much more in marketing. You could get some vinyl stickers made up with your logo/designs to sell as merch and place those over the Rode logo. I finally upgraded my super-cheap boom arm to a PSA1 a couple months ago and don’t regret it, but I’ll be looking at the 1+ in the future if I need any more. Thanks for the review!

The logos are a 100% deal breaker for me as well. Even if it were the best arm on the market, I couldn't buy it. When I make KZbin videos I declutter everything I can to help the viewer focus. I put away coffee coasters and unplug charging cables to my keyboard and mouse, hide unnecessary stuff, etc. Just as you said I want the focus on an item I'm holding or something I'm saying. I guess Rode probably sees this working in the gamer community/twitch streams (vs "KZbinrs"). BTW, I own 2 original PSA1s.

The RODE PSA1 is great and the PSA1+ certainly have welcome improvements...but I have since switched to the Elgato Wave Mic Arm which in my opinion is better overall than either of them (the Elgato is also nicer looking)...although the PSA1 does seem to be more stable when you position it (out of the box)...whereas the Elgato droops a little depending on how high you position...not sure if it's because of the weight of the mic (I use a Shure SM7B) and I'm not sure if the tension of the Elgato can be adjusted...but it's not much of an issue for me and I am too lazy to look up anything on the internets which could potentially eat on my time spent on watching cat videos.
