This mic is a clear discrepancy of what consumer actually want vs what brands wants and what brands thought consumers want: 1) Brand thought with so many podcast using the SM7B, if they add the Shure logo, it will be free advertising for them. The only reason I'm not upgrading to 6 of the SM7dB and bought 6 Lauten Audio LS-208 is purely because of the logo that Shure added. If I don't use it hang down, the logo will be upside down unless I open the screw and rotate it and screw it back. 2) They beauty of the SM7B is how subtle it was, the black plate makes it look so clean, now they no longer gives you the back plate 3) It's nice that they make the switch easier to access, but what's the point if no one even uses the switches in the first place? 4) Build in Pre-amp 5 years too late, now entry level audio interfaces already have 69 db of gain like the latest generation Scarlett, 76 db of gain with the Rodecaster pro II/duo, 80 db of gain with mackie DLZ creator. How about studios? People will studio already have preamp like the 1073 which already have more than enough gain to power the SM7B. 5) The mic color (shiny) and proportion just looks wrong and camera, the elongated design with the taper, just make the mic looks weird, the original SM7B already look perfect, why mess with that? 6)Here's what people actually want, we want the next generation of SM7B -Better sound so we can upgrade our current SM7B to the next generation SM7C. Maybe neodymium magnet? Improved capsule? Better internals? Lower Noise Floor with the same sound signature? -The wire coming out from the side, we want it to be internal so it will look cleaner on camera -Better yok mount so it's easier to screw -Built in wire mesh pop filter inside the cage for the capsule, perhaps something like the JZ-PF pop filter -We want the rest to be the same, because of the MAYA effect - Most Advanced, Yet Acceptable - To sell something familiar, you must make it surprising and to sell something surprising, you must make it familiar.

Thanks for the time to make this. Yeah if you have a good enough setup you won't need the added benefits of the db, since it is exactly the same mic as the older version, I didn't expect any sonic difference anyway since micboosters are not known to color the sound too much. You can buy many types of mic boosters for less than 100usd like the fethead nowadays anyway.
@tombuck
@tombuck Жыл бұрын
Yeah, the CT-1 is quite good! I do appreciate the convenience of having a booster built in with no need for extra cables or anything, but I don't think it's worth $500.

@@tombuckI can imagine a few situations where you wished you spent the extra 100 , but that is mostly if you use it on tour or very disorganized 😂 But if a 100 makes the difference between being heard or not... It's not that much of a difference to not buy the option of (much) easier deployment. I know it is 25% more. But it's not an expensive item in the pro range of gear to begin with. I wanna buy a Sennheiser md21 but can't find a review where it is tried with a bit more distance. If it doesn't mind 70cm too much I want a different setup 😂 any recommendations for the 21?

One of the great things about the SM7dB is that you don't need much else. You will need an XLR interface (any one should work fine since it has the built in booster, so something like a Focusrite Scarlett Solo is probably the simplest place to start. Then you just need an XLR cable to connect it and probably a stand of some kind- either a tabletop one or a bigger boom arm. If you've already got one for your current mic, it should work just fine. 👍

I definitely thing the dB is a potentially good mic for the new KZbinr who's just starting to get their own gear, has heard so many people say they "must" buy a booster and has gear that is not properly capable. But it is good to know that the same sound people have come to depend upon is still present in the dB. Video Idea: Booster Alternatives - there are a few affordable mic preamps that can help deliver better quality sound and do more than simply boost the signal. ART Tube MP is a great little tube preamp whose V3 costs in the same range as a CloudLifter and the used V2 can be had for $40 or less. I've been playing with my old v2 lately (as I've been thinking more on outboard gear) with the RE20 and AM30 and have been enjoying the exploration.
@tombuck

I do have a booster video from a while back, but it could be worth trying out some different ones. Although with so many new interfaces having so much built in gain, I'm wondering if boosters overall are becoming a thing of that past?
@onocoffee
@onocoffee Жыл бұрын
@@tombuck Agreed on the interfaces with more boosted preamps but just as a thought, the recording studio world still uses preamps and outboard effects (albeit a price points much greater than the average KZbinr) to help shape the sound. I've been playing around with it lately to see if they will add a better dimension to our voice overs.

Hi Tom, Great video sir. I have a couple of questions for you, if you don't mind. 1) I'm looking at getting the Focusrite Vocaster One to use with the Shure SM7B. My first question is would using a Cloud Lifter result in any better audio than just using the Vocaster One by itself? 2) In looking into the Focusrite Vocaster One, it appears that it has a camera output. Does this mean that you can record audio from the Shure SM7B directly into the camera then? Would the audio be the same quality as recording into a computer? The camera I currently use is the Sony a6100 if that matters. Thanks!

Tom, another excellent microphone review. I always enjoy hearing your prospective on new microphones. You mentioned the difficulty of mounting the Rode Procaster. I too was having problems. B&H included a shock mount with the Procaster that was similar to the Rode model free with the microphone. Because the Procaster is so heavy I had problems getting the microphone stay in my set position. Because of that problem I purchased a Gator Frameworks Universal Shockmount for 18-55mm Studio Condenser Microphones from B&H and placed it toward the middle of the Procaster. I did my best to find where the microphone’s balance point was. This new shock mount has solved my problems. I can now set the Procaster in almost any position and it will stay. This shock mount sort of mimics the “cradle” style mount on the SM7B and it does a much better job of isolating “handling noise” as well.

Fab video! Covered so much! I have an old Rode NT 1 for recording vocals but i’m looking for something like the SM7b but now you got me looking at other options. Problem is i’m getting keyboard sounds, even sustain pedal sounds on live recordings (wooden floor) and need a mic for clean vocals but that doesn’t pick up the keys sound or other outside noises and rumbles, is the SM7b still the best for that kind of environment? thanks 🙏
@tombuck
@tombuck 9 ай бұрын
Very few mics outside of like a Coles sports announcer mic will block out all environmental sounds, but the SM7B and SM7dB are pretty darn good at rejecting unwanted sound, and the shock rejection is second to none. It's really phenomenal how much handling/table/mic arm noise these things don't pick up.

The SM7dB really is a mic for people who are ready to update their sound but not necessarily ready to switch interfaces it seems. To wit, a beginner who may have started their journey with a budget interface or at least one without crazy amounts of gain, may be using a less expensive mic with it. An upgrade for that person typically will not just be the interface, it will be the mic too. When considering the prices of new podcast interfaces, the SM7dB doesn’t look expensive at all. For example, I have a Tascam MiniStudio Creator US 42b. It has 2 preamps and I have a Maono HD300T and the same Klark Teknik Booster you have. A decent setup that does what I have asked from it well, but it definitely isn’t being updated. But, fun fact for those who don’t know, the Klark Teknik Booster only has an EIN of about -120db which is about the same as the Ministudio. I can run the mic hotter, but I won’t improve my noise floor at all. Reports say that the EIN with the Booster on the SM7dB is more like -130dB which is a significant improvement to the noise floor for someone in my position. So, when someone like me looks at the price of upgrading their setup, any old booster won’t do with an SM7B if I want to improve the noise floor and upgrading my interface either costs me a ton of money and adds preamps I won’t use or (in the case of the Vocaster) cost me a quarter ton of money and sacrifices features (the MiniStudio has 3 sound pads and records multitrack). The thing that is often missing in reviews of Mic Boosters is the EIN they bring to the table. That is the puzzle piece that would help the most when choosing between the SM7dB, the Dynacaster and the Blue Sona and other mics of their ilk. I am not sure if it is scientifically possible to get better than -130db EIN but I would need to know what EIN the other mics are working with if noise floor control is my main concern (and for me it is, I actually like the MiniStudio). Hearing the mics compared on an already excellent but super expensive interface kinda leaves people with those less capable interfaces in the lurch because we aren’t hearing how they may sound on our systems.

I'm totally ignorant but if you don't have an audio interface like your Roadcaster 2 and or a cloudlifter (Booster)? It would be the same price no? I have nothing so trying to get started with good base items like the Sm7b...(audio books, voiceovers podcast). I thought the Sm7db would eliminate the booster/ cloudlifter?

With RC2, you will end having it sing 2 boosters.. I wonder how it would be compared in RodeCaster1(i have one, and there are now so many good deals on ebay, now) and SM7B with boosters vs SM7dB .. ..Every time i look at these SM7B mics, i find so obvious design flaw of cable, could go out of mic, just below, near of support, that would even hide it almost.. Nice video, as usual!

Since the built in booster is designed or built in collaboration with Cloud, I don't THINK there should be any difference between using an external one vs. the internal one with the original RCP. I honestly should've checked though before returning the mic!

Great that you went so much in detail in this video. I bumped up the audio in my headphones to hear those nuances.. I'm all with you regarding this new/old mic and understand who it's for 100%. On this end I'm still flaggin' out of sheer pride that I invested in an Earthworks SR314 because it's great, great, great. I use it both live and for studio, livestreaming.. I've even tested it in a church environment where my PA was quite close to me (BOSE L1), worked great. Oops, that wasn't a subject here, bragging.. But when you were showing and demoing that gorgeous EV-RE20, I've always favoured it more than SM7B, it sounded just great, despite plosives.. And, Tom, you can't spell an iMac without Mac 🙂 Cheers!

Hi, question for you or anyone kind enough to answer. Starting a podcast here and got the sm7db from the research I did. With the h6 zoom recorder, is that a relatively good set up? Considering we don’t know much about audio, I didn’t want to buy more like the cloud lifter for the sm7b. Figured I’d buy the db and just hold on to that without having to upgrade. Thanks

When you first announced you were going to get the db, I was skeptical because it seemed like a SM7B but with a boost for $100 extra which didnt make sense since Logi covered that department with thr Sona. Now, w/your video I realize the Sona still wins because the noise floor was quieter and is CHEAPER!! Hello!!! I think my question now is what are your settings on the RCPII for thr Sona? Do you use the preset for the 7B or have something specisl for the Sona?

It really depends on your interface. The dB (and any XLR mic) will require some sort of USB XLR interface. There are specific USB mics out there like the Shure MV7+ or Sennheiser Profile (and a million others) that can just connect to the computer directly. Fortunately just about any mic and interface will work with just about any computer 👍

$669.00 CAD is relatively insane for a 50-year old dynamic mic with a small output upgrade. The original was already wildly overpriced. I imagine the streamer-hype is really guiding the price on this. Shure is surely laughing their way to the bank every week.

omg this is actually perfect for me 😭😭I've had my heart set on the SM7B for years bc I love the sound as far as I've heard it from several of my favorite creators and musicians, and I've seen how it preforms on voices with similar ranges to me, doing things similar to what I plan to do with it. Add the fact that I hate handling noise and I like the look of the SM7B, and I've been very focused on it ever since. I, personally, do not have the budget for it as of currently - I'm a student, so it is what it is, but despite that, I've been set on it and refuse to get anything else. I know it's a bit ridiculous, but honestly? Yeah, I've seen cheaper alternatives, ones that would suit my purpose and are a tenth of a price, but I know how my brain works - if I buy a cheaper alternative, I'm going to be unsatisfied with it until I actually get an SM7B, in which case I'd end up spending more by getting the alternatives on top of the one I actually want. *However.* I'm absolutely HORRIBLE at cable management. I'm always getting tangled/having things fall apart/come unplugged, and it's insanely annoying. This issue is happening with the $5 microphone I got at a garage sale and a $2 cable, so I know it would be even worse with even more elements. As in love with the SM7B as I am, I've been absolutely dreading having to sort out the cables and the cloudlifter, since my audio interface doesn't have any sort of preamp. I found an amazon bundle for the SM7B, a cloudlifter, and the second cable I'd need to connect it all, and it goes for $600. I know there are cheaper options but I don't trust my own judgement enough to confidently pick something else, so I mentally settled for that bundle. I just went "I can't do that yet, but I'm willing to spend that to get it, so I'll bookmark this and wait until I can" because that's how much I want it. So, a $500 microphone that sounds exactly like the SM7B, not worse not better but _exactly_ like it (as again my interface doesn't have preamp like that), with the addition of easier-to-access switches (bc I'm the sort of person who loves to mess around with settings to see what works) and the gain built into it?? The thing I want most but without the part I'm dreading, for $100 CHEAPER than I was willing to pay for it??? Perfect for me. anyways, long ramble bc I'm pretty much the exact target niche of this microphone, but I LOVE THIS VIDEO. I've spent ages watching various microphone reviews, trying (and failing) to find one that was cheaper but more appealing than the SM7B to me, and they often take forever to get to the point. This one was straight-to-the-point but in a way that kept me watching the whole time, and the comparisons were super helpful! Plus, I think this is the first time I've ever seen someone do a distance test of any sort?? Which is another part of why this is such a helpful video for me 😭tysm for this
