Of course the new one is better, just the the weight alone is worth the upgrade. I’ve had both, and I’m very happy with the DGDN, but let’s better clear both are amazing lenses.
@TomCalton3 жыл бұрын
The size and weight difference make it sooooo much nicer than the old one. Plus the fact the AF is actually functional for video work too is a nice bonus 👌
@alexblaze88783 жыл бұрын
Note: you can pick up an excellent condition used sigma HSM for HALF the price of the new DG DN model. Value wise, based on the still-excellent performance of the older model, it’s the better deal IMO.

If size, weight and features aren't high up on your list of priorities, I would agree. It's still a very good option of anyone shopping on a budget 👍

@TomCalton3 жыл бұрын
I totally agree! My guess is that we'll see an upgraded 35mm f/1.4 first (to compete with Sony's latest 35mm f/1.4 GM release) then maybe a new 50mm or 135mm. Either way, I feel like this year is going to be a good one for Sony camera owners!

I was strongly considering buying this lens but then learned that the DN version isn't available for the Canon mount. I think I'll wait to see if it becomes available.
@TomCalton2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately I don't think that'll happen any time soon as Canon seem pretty rigid on their plans to not allow third party manufacturers to make lenses for RF mount. Such a shame. Feels very greedy to me 🤷🏻♂️

Hello, from ur experience, I wanted to ask u about bokeh comparison in sigma 85mm f1.4 lens on both apsc and full frame, which camera will result in more bokeh? I know that full frame is better in bokeh but considering the compression we get from the crop factor on apsc in the 85mm distance will that result in more bokeh than using it in full frame body?

Hello, thank for a great video. May I ask a question about distortion of Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN. How about distortion in VIDEO recording when you turn on and turn off In Camera Lens Corrections? Thank you!
@TomCalton3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting! For video work, so long as you have the lens comp settings enabled on your camera, the distortion and vignetting is almost entirely removed. It seems to work really well 👍

Curious, did you do any tests of Sony's in-camera distortion correction in video? I am assuming if it works great for JPEGs it would work fine for video but haven't seen much on it...
@TomCalton3 жыл бұрын
I didn't use in camera corrections for this test, but I have used it for videos in the past and it does a really good job of correcting distortion within video. Definitely worth a try!

Hi. Very interesting video. I have the opportunity to buy this lens. It is labeled EX SIGMA only on it. Is it an old one ? Good one compared to new model ? Thanks for your feedback
@TomCalton3 жыл бұрын
The lens you're referring to is the old, old version of Sigma's 85mm, so not quite the same as either of these two. Couldn't tell you how it compares to these as it's fairly old now and was discontinued a good number of years ago.

The old DG HSM version is available on Canon EF mount, but neither are currently on RF mount. My understanding is that Canon doesn't want third party lenses on their mirrorless cameras

sigma 105mm 1.4 or sigma 85mm 1.4 DG DN ,, i want your advice ,, i have sigma 105mm but i wan't change to 85mm beacuse 105mm very very heavy
@TomCalton3 жыл бұрын
Oh wow, that's a tough one! The 105mm is an awesome lens, but the 85mm is A LOT lighter. So if the weight of the 105mm is stopping you from using it then I would say it's probably worth the switch.

There is small size of sigma 85mm 1.4 *DG* but no *DG DN* !!!
@siulsomar172 жыл бұрын
You had corrected the distortion on the new lens, then used those results in the comparison, While not correcting for the chromatic aberrations on the old lens. Although I think this a slightly bias, this is still a good review.
@TomCalton2 жыл бұрын
That's really not true at all - watch that part again. I corrected for barrel distortion on the new lens to demonstrate the point about it being easily corrected, then I reverted it back to the original uncorrected version for the analysis.
@LY1216882 жыл бұрын
I think what he means is that you did the sharpness test without distortion correction on the new one even though you demonstrated the correction just a few seconds previously. I am deeply opposed to software distortion correction as you are cropping and scaling the image and wasting the sensor which is the most expensive part of the camera. Someone else did a sharpness test where he compared the old sigma 85mm to the new one both with and without distortion correction, and the old one can be sharper at smaller apertures. At 7:16 you corrected the distortion, then at 7:21 you uncorrected it to do your sharpness test, which is flawed as you lose contrast from scaling the image.

I had both and the new one is awful.

@blackimp4987Ай бұрын
no cmon this is a commercial not a real review. no one honest could go for a lens that distort that way and rely on software that necessarily will alter the details close the borders.
