perfectly explained, thanks a lot man. Just had one question transferring catalogue to distrokid from another distributor. What if one song I am transferring across is a cover song being ONLY uploaded to Spotify? I know that Spotify automatically sorts out mechanical licenses, so is it okay to simply choose that its an original and then include the original writers in the metadata? I don't know if choosing the cover option will mess up the transfer process, since distro is one of the only ones that have that service.

Why do ppl do this..I'm thinking if a song blew up on CDBaby..they take 10%..if I move it to Ditto they take zero share but do they collect stream royalties?
@AndrewSouthworth3 жыл бұрын
A lot of artists start on free distributors or distributors that don't charge an up-front fee but may take a cut. Down the line when your music starts doing well you realize you're paying WAY more in that percentage cut than you would just paying the up-front fee, so people switch. For example I use DistroKid which charges a yearly subscription, as low as $20/year if you're on the cheapest plan for unlimited releases. If you were on CD Baby who takes a 9% cut, for 100,000 Spotify streams over the course of a year you'd be losing about $27 in their cut, and for 1 million streams you'd be losing $270. Even though DistroKid charges you every single year to keep your music up you're actually saving money since they don't take a percentage. Aside from stuff like that, the other reason may just be features or services the distributor sends to.

Hi Tom, I notice that most distributors recommend to takedown previously released content (from another distributor) *before* submitting it to them to (re)-distribute, and they indicate that by doing such, the playcounts and playlsits would still remain the same (assuming the metadata is copied accurately, etc). Is there any risk to having the 'double upload' time in between the new upload and the takedown of previous, as you recommend, such as, flags by outlets whereby both releases could being taken down temporarily? Why do distributors make this recommendation to takedown old content first; should the distributors' advice be followed at all, or is that a bad idea? thanks!
@tomdupreeiii3 жыл бұрын
I definitely wouldn't pull material down from one distributor until you've uploaded it at the new one. I think that's bad advice. You want to make sure your bases are covered. If you take it down first before you upload it in the new spot, there's a risk you'll lose that data.

What if previous distributor has publishing royalties and you are switching because you don’t want them to have that. Couldn’t I just start fresh if I didn’t care about streams or placements?

Okay bro i have a question what if i have all the data of my song the ISRC, and i use use a different artist name the difference is just in capital letters like john to John will all my streams and data be saved for transfer :)
@tomdupreeiii Жыл бұрын
I would adjust the formatting of your name before moving your catalog. There's a decent chance it won't sync up if you change the formatting, even if it's only the capital letter.

@@tomdupreeiii So now i for me to edit my Spotify and Apple Music name, I’de have to make a new profile to get what i want?
@Seeimhollywood2 жыл бұрын
If you transfer songs, do you have to wait 30 days or 2 weeks for the release or is it okay to repost it for the soonest day.
@tomdupreeiii Жыл бұрын
You can put them up as quickly as you want to. If you're moving songs, then you can set the original release date and they'll go live as soon as they're processed.

Can I do the same if I try to change the audio of the release? I would like to have a better version for an album, so I'm wondering if this is possible? Thank you!
@tomdupreeiii2 жыл бұрын
It is possible to remaster the file when you make the switch, but it is risky. I’ve been able to pull it off with my waterfall releases, but just know there is a chance it won’t work.

I’m trying to switch from cd baby yo distrokid, but when I go to upload on distrokid and enter in my artist name it’s not giving me the option to add my Spotify or apple info. Not sure how to get it to where I can add that info. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

It should automatically sync up with your current profile as long as your name remains the same. If you have issues with it, I might reach out the the DK team.

I would only change the cover after you've successfully made the move. Want to make sure it all syncs up correctly.

No, unfortunately not. The same ISRC code cannot be pushed to Release Radar more than once.

Thanks for this Tom. Would you ever consider doing a video comparing distributors other than distrokid and cd baby? I use repost by soundcloud because it comes free with a soundcoud account. That’s a video idea I’ve lossless considered but I haven’t done a lot of thinking about yet. I may put something together. For now though I’ll say you’d be best off with either DistroKid or Amuse.

You should be able to do it at the album level, but you'll still need to input all of the data for each song individually when you upload the album. ISRC codes, titles, etc.
