DPAF... In case you didn´t notice, canon does not currently have one inch (or smaller) sensor that has DPAF. It is onboard the sensor, hardware thing. Cannot fix it with firmware update. These are the cameras from Canon that have DPAF: C100, C200 and C300 cinema cameras,M5, M6 and M50 mirrorless cameras, 1 DX Mark II, 5D Mark IV, 6D Mark II, 7D markII, 70D, 77D, 80D, Rebel T71 (also known as the EOS 800D) and the Rebel SL2 (EOS 200D) DSLRs.
@tomedwards815 жыл бұрын
Dave X hi Dave. Canon actually do make a 1 inch sensor with dual pixel af that they use in their camcorders. Check out the Vixia GX10 as an example. They went with a Sony sensor in the G7X which is why there’s no DPAF. It’s assumed to be the one from the RX100 Mark iv so no phase detection af. I guess Sony wouldn’t sell them their latest version, or Canon wouldn’t pay for it!
@davex1425 жыл бұрын
Tom Edwards of course, I should have phrased it more exactly. Canon does not have one inch sensor, that is usable in hybrid mirrorless cameras and has DPAF. The sensor you mentioned is 8megapixels camcorder sensor and shoots 4K pixel exactly, for stills is a big no no.
@tomedwards815 жыл бұрын
I would actually like it if they put an 8 megapixel sensor in a hybrid camera. I’ve don’t tend to print larger than 8”x12” or 8”x10” so that would still give me 300dpi which is more than enough detail. But they won’t because marketing has convinced everyone they need lots of megapixels, even though most people don’t even print their photos anymore. And if they do it’s usually just 4x6. Perhaps 12 megapixels is a good compromise (like the Sony A7s) although I doubt it will happen.

Agreed on the complaints about 30fps. Just edit in a 24fps timeline. The overheating is common in smaller cameras. The newest Sony RX100 still has a 5 minute time limit (Canon seems to be 10 min). For the mic, I just clip the little Rode wireless GO receiver to the wrist strap when there’s not cold shoe. I’m looking at the pros more than the cons (mic input, usb-c, 4K no crop, Digic 8, picture profiles, etc.) Those are all worthwhile additions that IMO warrant an upgrade.
@tomedwards815 жыл бұрын
Ah yes, I forgot to mention the 4K recording limit! Not uncommon amongst compacts as you say. Indeed there are some nice upgrades and I’m sure it will be a popular camera for KZbin. Perhaps my expectations became a little too high after such a long wait, but I do think no dual pixel autofocus is a glaring omission. Anyway, I hope you enjoy your G7X Mark iii when you get it and enjoy making some great content with it. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@bryanbuff5 жыл бұрын
I should’ve clarified that the 10 min limit is with 4K (5 min limit on the Sony RX100V). I’m guessing the DPAF was a processing limitation, but haven’t read anything definitive on why they didn’t/couldn’t add that. That would’ve been amazing.

I have GPro6, but be interested to see what they release this year to raise the bar on the competition.
@tomedwards815 жыл бұрын
It could still be an option, but personally - at the launch price - I won't be taking the plunge. You could wait and see what Sony does with the next RX100 camera. If they weren't already going to put a mic input in that I bet they will now. The GoPro Hero8 (expected later this year) might be another option, but you've got to be happy with an action camera and all that entails. I stopped vlogging with interchangeable lens cameras last year so I don't know what's happening on that front but there might be some possibilities there. Good luck and thanks for watching!

@@tomedwards81 thanks Tom. Yeah it's quite a beast. No nd filter on it like the mk vi. I haven't used a built nd, but I know on the bigger cameras video can be useless on a bright day if trying to match fps to ss. What are your thoughts. I did see a spec sheet for the canon m50 mk ii the other day, looks good (no crop or recording limit in 4k etc apparently). But not really pocket sized.
@tomedwards815 жыл бұрын
Personally for me, a camera without a ND or the ability to attach one is useless. I use a Panasonic GH5 nearly everyday at work and I almost always use a variable ND filter. For pocket sized photography and vlogging it deceptively tough to find a do it all camera. There will always be compromises. I'd take a look at the Canon M50. It's a great value little camera that does most things quite well.
@mb-watches5 жыл бұрын
Interesting thoughts, thanks for that 👍🏻 I really am psyched when I see the specs. 4K looked sharp and slomo not as bad. My second camera at the moment is the m100 and for quick and dirty vids or traveling it’s ok. But I really do consider the g7xm3: Microphone jack, ok 4K, good Full HD... hmm have to think it through. On the other hand the m100 has the Better Sensor and I can record the sound with my recorder. I will wait until it’s out and after 1 year on the market price should be better plus Software updates might improve the super slomo ... lets see. Would you flip the m100 for the g7?? (Mainly shooting in a studio, sometimes on the go)
@tomedwards815 жыл бұрын
I have the M100 and I see it as a very different camera from the G7X Mark iii. I use my M100 mostly for photography (with the 22m f2 lens). When I shoot video with the M100 it’s on a tripod with audio recorded separately on a Zoom H1n. I don’t ‘vlog’ with it per se. Good idea to wait for the price of the G7X Mark iii to drop before you buy, although I wouldn’t hold my breath for a firmware update from Canon.

That’s a good point and no, I don’t think they’ve addressed that Ian. Canon mentioned something about more rugged iris blades but nothing about weather selling. I wish they would ditch the lens design and give us a filter thread so we can attach a UV filter to protect the glass.
@EmilyJoyMusic5 жыл бұрын
Hey mate! What would you recommend for vlogging then that is compact, has a flip screen to see yourself and good inbuilt stabilisation ? :) Thanks!
@tomedwards815 жыл бұрын
Hi Emily. You could look at the Sony RX100 V (expensive but packed full of features). The DJI Osmo Action cam, which doesn’t have a flip screen but rather an extra front facing screen so you can still see yourself. Stabilisation is excellent but it won’t be as good in low light due to the smaller sensor. If you want to save some money then you could get the Canon G7X Mark ii. It ticks your boxes despite being three years old, but it doesn’t have the best autofocus in video (not terrible though). Don’t rule out the Canon G7X Mark iii either. I’m just disappointed about some of its shortcomings, but they may not be as big a deal for you. Take a look at some reviews and test footage on KZbin and decide for yourself whether it does what you want it to do. Good luck!

Would you shoot in 4K then? I remember when I first looked at the files from my Panasonic G85 and I was blown away by the sharpness in 1080p. Since then I’ve put up with slightly softer video from Canon because of dual pixel af. That’s why not having it in the G7X Mark iii is such a let down. For a fairly pricey Canon camera in 2019 that’s a joke, in my opinion.

@@tomedwards81 well the problem is overheating. Not sure how long the camera can shoot.

JoeCnNd I agree. I was shocked when I heard about the overheating. That’s never been an issue with Canon. Especially considering the fact that they’ve limited the 4K recording time to 10 mins.

Nice video! I'm quite happy with the M50. I guess the benefit of the G7X is that it's quite small in comparison to other, similarly-specked cameras.
@tomedwards815 жыл бұрын
There's nothing wrong with your M50. It's a great camera and no need to upgrade. While the G7X iii is compact the lens is fixed to the body, so if the front glass gets damaged or dust gets in the whole camera is more or less bricked. Plus if you attach a quality lens to the M50 like the 22mm f2 (you have it) or the 32mm f1.4 it blows the G7X iii out of the water in terms of image quality.

Yeah the KZbin live streaming was a surprising innovation and really shows how Canon is catering to vloggers with the G7X Mark iii. It also has a beefed up screen hinge and a chunkier grip - both of which are welcome ergonomic improvements.
