I’m practically sold on the tail vise for my bench, but I’ve been going back and forth between the HNT Gordon face vise and the Benchcrafted leg vise. This was most informative for me in my decision process. Cheers!

The tail vice is brilliant. I'm really happy with the HNT front vice. It just works so well. I haven't been using it long now, it has never slipped during the times I have used it. I plan on building another bench sometime this year, definitely will be using another HNT vice for it.

@@kuffyswoodwork how did you space your dog holes? Would you drill holes first like you did? Thanks
@kuffyswoodwork2 жыл бұрын
The holes are directly inline with the tailvice along the length of the bench. I have the 100mm version of the HNT tailvice, so i spaced my dogholes to be less than 100mm. It was about 95mm apart. The hole closest to the tailvice was located to be within 95mm of the point where the vice is fully closed. My first doghole is much closer to this because the spacing was specifically worked out to avoid having any holes land on top of the rails beneath the bench top. I think it is MUCH easier to drill the holes first before installing the slabs onto the frame. This allows the use of a drill press, which gives nice plumb holes.

What beautiful hardware and series of videos. With that, I am now up-to-date with the Kuffy-san Woodworking Studio... but I think I'll re-watch the final bench compilation again for funsies as that thing is up there with the Ark of the Covenant. So many moments during this build that just made me smile at how satisfying it was coming together and I'm sure I've taken masses of tips away. It will take me a while yet before I'm ready and have the time to get into handtools, but watching this channel has firmly broadened my woodworking horizons. Cheers mate! Looking forward to the "Scorped Stool" 😊

Fantastic again mate, I saw the vase slip under the clamp while you were drilling it. With 6 big screws in it you can just back off the front 2 and put the rear 2 in biased towards the back of the hole so it moves into the right position and then put the middle ones in then drive the front 2 home again. Basically what we do on fitout installs when hardware doesn’t line up the 1st time. Love those HNT Gordon vises, wish Andrew Klein made his twin screw sooner, I kinda regret the Veritas twin screw after seeing his
@kuffyswoodwork4 жыл бұрын
Biasing the two back holes is what I did in the end. I kind of half wanted to mess up the installation just to show how easy it is to fix up, because it is quite important that this vice is installed square to the bench top. There really is no racking in the vice, so if the vice isn't square you will be forever applying pressure with only one edge of the vice rather than the full face.

Awesome stuff mate “an I like it a lot” One suggestion while watching you struggle to line the 10 mm face vice holes up for drilling. I thought what if you ran a 10 mm bit in the holes backwards for just a bit, creating a shallow centred divide thingy, to guide your smaller drill bit?? Cheers Matt.

Yeah, using a 10mm bit has been suggested. It's such a facepalm moment. Ah well, it's all good now, and also showed the simple no stress process of how to fix it.

Loving the build so far mate! Vic Ash is a bastard for splintering, isn't it? Regarding your drilling of the vice holes, perhaps a more accurate approach would be to use a 10mm drill as a transfer punch, move the hole a touch using your awl, and then drill. This would allow you to pretty much guarantee no twist in your mounting rather than just eyeballing it. As for finish, given what you said, perhaps consider some brown or black Japan.

Does anyone know, if its possible to dissassemble the knob on the rear? The video shows at one point a tiny hole at the end of the the vise´s body. Is it to reach some kind of screw that locks the knob to the shaft? The reason is, I would need to make the the knob detachable, otherwise it would obstruct clamping workpieces on the right side of my (mft-)bench. Thx

What a fantastic build series once again, it's becoming prime time viewing over xmas period, it will take something pretty special to beat that next xmas. Is there any special reason you want to colour the top ? Looking forward to seeing it completed 👍👍👍👍
@kuffyswoodwork4 жыл бұрын
I said I would colour the top to be brown or black in the video, and since I kept a straight face I decided to include it in the video. I did have plans of staining the top a lighter unnatural colour, but I figured it'll just be more work each time I want to flatten the top. I wanted the top a different colour because the bench is Tassie Oak and I often work with Tassie Oak, so I wanted the contrast for video.

Nice one very impressive I do like your vice . They made it with six holes . Would you short change the bolts on your car wheels? A life time in mechanical engineering says fill up all holes. Great build congratulations.look forward to more of your work. Just looked at the price here in the UK. £460 .will stick with my Stanley six inch engineers vice with soft jaws.

Uhm...yeah....I would short change the bolts on my car wheels, and I think I actually have at one point. I do plan on adding the 5th and 6th bolt once I am committed to the position of the vice. I have had to take the vice off since this video to finish off some of the woodwork. The 5th and 6th bolt will be installed and tightened once only, which is a good thing when working with timbers.

@kuffyswoodwork4 жыл бұрын
At the end of this video, I am making a few shavings and the bench isn't bolted down. I could leave it like that, but it probably would bounce occasionally when using a chisel and mallet. It's heavy, but it still can bounce/vibrate a little. A few coach bolts through the apron and she'll be right as rain.

"I like it, I like it a lot". Me too mate - it's 💯 mint. I'm on the HNT website now - oh la la, beautiful. I have to admit I was cringing when you freehand drilled those holes and then ... lo and behold. I was fully expecting you to use the drill press. Pity there isn't really such a thing as a mag drill for woodworking apart from those cheap adapter thingys. Drilling holes is one of the most buggy processes in woodworking in my opinion. Have to admit (again) I was surprised to hear that you're going to colour the wood. When did you say you were going to KZbin that? Have to admint #3 - I feel like I've made this thing myself - that's how intimate (giggle) your videos are. (yeah I know I spelt it "admint" the last time. I actually spelt it that way all three times but I got sick of correcting it). You back at work?
@kuffyswoodwork4 жыл бұрын
I've always hated having to drill accurate holes either freehand or even with a drill press. I have some control over the entry point of the drill, but only God knows what the drill does as it burys itself into the timber. "when did I say I was going to youtube that?" I'm not quite sure what you are asking, when am I going to release the final compilation video? Probably in about 3 weeks from now...if it is done! Yeah I am back at work, and it is only slightly south of 1million degrees celcius!

I haven't done a review on the tail vice. I think the best review I can give is my second bench also uses a 100mm stroke HNT Gordon tail vice. I haven't uploaded the videos for the second bench yet.
@farmcat3198 Жыл бұрын
@@kuffyswoodwork Okay. Any thoughts on the 100mm stroke vs. the 150 mm stroke?
@kuffyswoodwork Жыл бұрын
@@farmcat3198 The 100mm is better in my opinion. It takes less time to wind out the full 100mm if needed compared to winding out a full 150mm. It also uses less space on the right hand side of the bench (for right handed people), and therefore you end up with greater clamping capacity on the same bench compared with the 150mm version.

Kuffy, I am going to buy your plans. Really like your design. I do bowever have a question, do you see any issues with me making the less at 90 degrees rather than splayed? Regards, Jeff
@kuffyswoodwork2 жыл бұрын
You can make the legs at 90° instead of splayed. It makes the build slightly easier, but you also lose some rigidity in the frame when planing boards along the length of the bench. It's much the same if you are standing straight upright, and I push you. You're going to fall over, but if you brace yourself with one leg behind you, you'll be able to take the impact and probably punch me for pushing you :D

@kuffyswoodwork Жыл бұрын
Nah, the timber splitting is a product of the grain direction as well as the rotation of the router bit. You can't really hold my router backwards because the handles are tilted forward. It's very uncomfortable to hold it backwards.
