99% of a eclipse is NOTHING like totality. Nothing. Your in the shadow or you are not. Seeing the diamond ring and then totality was mind blowing. I have seen my wife cry twice by nature. Once at the base of Niagara Falls, standing on the lower deck, on the rail, 3 feet off the water on the maid of the mist. The other was Monday April 8th during totality. It was so good - its impossible to tell anyone. I cried too. Its just overwhelming. If you have the ways and means to do so, travel the world to see it yourself. Otherwise... see it in heaven when you get there. I'll be happy to watch it with you there.

Hey, Tom….. solar eclipses happen all the time. Not in the same place but they do happen every few years somewhere on earth. I photographed this one as well as the one in 2017. Both in Missouri and both had totality. Had you experienced totality…… you would have been completely blown away. Any partial phase and there isn’t much change. Totality will almost take your breath away though. It is STUNNING.

Even at 99% totality, it got dim in Ottawa (Nepean) however it was still brighter than I anticipated at the peak. The best way I could describe how the 1% sunlight felt was "day for night" in old movies, where they put a filter on the lens to make everything look dark but, if you look at trees in the background, it's still obviously daytime. It wasn't quite like dawn or dusk where there's just a sliver of sun over the horizon because that light is more filtered. It was just surreal.

Ok. Tom, I thought I saw you prior to this eclipse on the Blue Line train in Chicago and I lightly shouted "Do a Barrel Roll" when I decided it was likely you, as you exited the train at an underground stop. Personally, I was sacrificing my view of the eclipse to my ancestors by cheaping out and not buyng eclipse glasses. As I sat by the Buddhist Temple on 31st St, someone walked up and offered me a view thru their glasses, which of course I did not expect. The street was slightly dimmer, but I was flabergasted at the view thru these glasses and I announced verbally, twice, that I was "Shitting Bricks."

Probably another 50 miles south and you would have been in full totality. My brother lives in Kokomo and only the southern half of the city experienced full totality. It's one of those things where even less than a mile makes a difference. I heard those who lived in the north side of town could look to the south and see night.
