A good point for new folks, is when fluxing the pipe, try to match the insertion depth of the fitting e.g 22mm pipe fitting maybe 1" insertion, so Flux an inch on the pipe, it helps identify whether you have full insertion (only a thin line will be on show once pipe is slid in) . This is good practice especially for awkward / multiple fittings assembled at one time before soldering. I apply solder with flame on opposing side, then remove the flame and almost cool the joint slightly with more solder, otherwise, especially on horizontal fittings, the solder sinks down the joint and you get almost a recess in the top of the joint. Taking away torch and adding solder while joint cools, it'll solidify very quick and stop that. Do not try to be neat soldering for the sake of it, to avoid having drips and adding not enough solder, so a joint pops, you'll kick yourself and never do it again.

biggest tip is . copper and fitting must be spotless. If copper is gone dirty brown form sitting on top of the van for about six months. or it's just old copper, the best way to clean it is to apply some flux, heat the pipe till the flux starts to run, them immediately apply wire wool around the area to be cleaned, clean off immediately with a cloth. the copper will be spotless, guaranteed perfect joint.

It would be useful to show capillary action by putting two flat pieces of glass together in dyed water. It is not 'attraction', but the interaction at a molecular level between the fluid (solder) and the solid surfaces provided the gap is small. Once trainees 'get' this they will not be mystified as to what is happening inside the joint when soldering uphill. This gives them the confidence not to overfill. Also emphasise that the wire wool is mechanical cleaning, the flux is chemical cleaning/oxidation prevention. Good vid.

downfall of soldering is I found that it bags my lungs up and that ever flux fumes sticks to your skin.. they've found soldering causes industrial asthma. I moved over to press fittings and using a novopress gun. feel much better after installing boilers. not soldered in 3 plus years now. Nice video Derek.

Darn, now you have me concerned. I think if I did this as a profession I'd go for press too since it looks nice and there's no risk of fire; air quality is an added bonus.

If you’re new to pipework and soldering just get yourself a few lengths of 15/22mm copper pipe/fittings and just practice horizontal/vertical and overhead soldering And don’t forget safety glasses.

Useful video, I personally only use lead free, purely because it saves changing solders when working with a mix of services. Many years ago, I suffered a severe reaction when flux on my shirt collar rubbed against my neck. Apparently the flux contained a form of hydrazine. Just being pedantic, when describing tees, it's ends first and branch last. Could you do a video that explains how spring return valves maintain the various positions. I recently discovered a video on the subject by my namesake (no relation!). I've been fitting spring return valves 50 odd years and never knew what I found out. I'm sure I'm not the only one!

What I learned about spring return valves, was that in conjunction with switching and electronic components, the motor is supplied with DC current which stops the motor turning and holds the valve in the desired position. Now I've shared this, I hope we can keep this knowledge away from electricians!

@Vincerama, it isn't funny at all, as the GREAT AMERICAN DREAM wasn't to "BE FREE", but to be FREED from old English customs and sayings, so they decided to do and say EVERYTHING arst about, to ensure they were recognized as.. Yep - "Inverted English", thus of English origin, butt not now Old English, just New English, or just plain "A-Merry-Can's". Hence why Carrots became Root Vegetables, Fahrenheit, became Celsius & the Pound became a Dollar. And a NOTE became a Greenback (as if it was a different colour on the FRONT Oh and Colour (English spelling) was converted by dropping U out of it, to become Color - (as if it was a Colonoscopy issue?) BUTT That's just FOUR Shytz & Giggil(oh)s . USA means "Udderly Stuffed A-holes."

Love how most of the plumbers feel the need to throw low key shade at Lee for cleaning and polishing his work and think we don't see. I like polished pipes, i don't care if they are boxed in. It shows pride in ones work. I'd choose Lee over any plumber on here. M J tiff is messy as hell and doesn't clean anything. Not for me.
