Very interesting video, touching the subject of elisabethan ornaments. Also your remarks about the tempo and bringing historical fingering into the equation. Thank you, John!

Fantastic performance John. Really enjoyed this. And what a great piece! I worked on the Byrd version a while back.

I didn't know that this tune was still played in the 17th century! I associated it with Dowland and maybe other lutenist too! thanks this is interesting

Gran interpretación de estas variaciones, un monumento sonoro

Excellent presentation, subbed :) Also with the ornamentation marks the single and double slash I always thought it was more about the opportunity for the performer to improvise the ornamentation since that was expected by the composers at the time.

I would love to try playing this piece, would you be able to share a link to the sheet music you're using?
@johnmoraitis Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately it's not available online. I am using the edition from the Musica Britannica series, and I had made a photocopy of the piece from that book many years ago. What I posted for the scrolling score are photos I took of that copy.

tomas de sancta maria says in "Art of playing the fantasia" something like that ornaments approached from above will always be some variety of trill and from below will always be the equivalent of a mordent.....so that's from right around the time Tomkins was born and might be something to take into perspective too. I thought the tempo in your performance was really good

I'm happy you liked the tempo! And yes, I'm still exploring historical sources on ornamentation!
