My Dad taught me when I was 7 He played a chromatic upside down! He self taught whilst serving in France during WWII in the RAF Army. He taught me to play conventionally. He often was asked to play whilst marching and in turn they carried the Bren gun when it was his turn. As a youngster we loved it when he brought out the harmonica and played some tunes. Not something he did very often. Im not sure why... could be that it reminded him of the war which he never spoke about. He gave me his harmonica but I boiled it and ruined the comb, school boy error, no such thing as google, I now have a coupe of my own. Ive just started playing Diatonic and loving it. I remember having to swap the slide around when I played his harmonica, you're a great teacher Tomlin!

Very interesting lesson, not so easy to properly hold and cup the harp, for me, I have to say... so I have been very happy to hear from you that this can actually take ages to master, feel bit better now! :) one note though, relevant to the first part of the video... there are players out there that hold the harmonica with the right hand and NOT upside down, at least one of them, and granted he is not the most traditional blues player, he his in any case AMAZING... I can highly recommend Tomlin's on line harp school. Tons of resources but most importantly, honest and constructive feedback. 👊

Also the Great Paul Butterfield played upside down.

When I first started, I found it easier to get that cup with the right hand. When I started studying, it didn't seem worthwhile to switch hands. There's a little bit of a down side, of course, the numbers are upside down. But then, you can't spend a lot of time looking at the numbers anyways.

I just bought one in a whim and just started with my right hand, but yeah, flipping it upside down sounds a lot better thanks 😅😂

i have no choice in the matter. i cut one of the tendons in my left hand middle finger with a trim saw some time ago at work (carpenter) meaning i can't now straighten that finger. that meant i struggled to get a good seal holding the harp in my left hand so i was forced to hold my harp right handed! i also did not come across the idea of playing with the harp upside down until i was already comfortable with it right handed and the right way up. horses for courses, i guess we find the grip most comfortable for us.

I hold mine in my right hand I'm right handed, it just doesn't feel right to me the other way. Didn't Butterfield hold his "backwards"?

Sir but I start with left hand and the note I get easily. Could I sing a song properly?

Have you done a KZbin on Zepplin's When the Levee Breaks? If not, would you? I purchased a Bb harmonica specifically for that song. What I truly need are the tabs for the 3 harmonica solos?
