Love this video! You being happy to compare your shot to a pro’s really helps to visualise the different levels to a technique, humility is a great trait! Taking it to the next level - I would have loved to have seen you go through the process of implementing these changes to your technique. Keep the great content coming! 👍🏼

So useful. Our coach has been telling me about this, the earlier prep, and the arm swing, sooner and further back, but seeing the differences in slow motion like this is a visual aid that I think will help me put this into practice more easily! Thank you, Tom!

As always, excellent video. Thanks Tom. I so wish I had 1% of Liam's skill - but I'd definitely settle for a fraction of your skill instead, Tom. Good luck to Liam and the boys tonight against Serbia. I've got a ticket for tomorrow's match against France - can't wait. Hopefully we'll be treated to a ton of winning points with that superb forehand flick.

Hey Tom this is a great series . Tabletennis is so much about the technical deteails. Small changes take so much effect. I think every Amateur is struggeling putting the pieces of their game together but what really helps is to try to get the starting body positions of the different strokes right. For Example to move into the table the right way to prepare for a flick, or to keep the bat high and the shoulders forward to play a counter spin. Such things really improved my overall performance even if im still making many other mistakes that are not as easy to deal with. I really appreceate your work. thank you very much.

Happy to help. Make these comparison videos has been really useful for me also, as I can see all the things I do wrong. Trying to correct the bad habits is another matter though!

Excellent video! I really enjoy these comparison videos with Liam. What an amazing player to work with! (Shout out to Craig Bryant and Ferenc Horvath as well!)

Superb video, Tom! One more observation. Liam executes a flick using a push from his feet. Notice he slightly jumps up. This gives him more power and more control. This feature is even more noticable in Ma Long's execution.

Good observation.

Thank you so much Sensei Tom. This is a life-saver. I am very weak in FH flick and get punished a lot by my playmates. They will always target my short FH side knowing I can't do anything about it other than just push it back passively. I really need this new weapon to improve my game.

"Sensei Tom" - I like it. Maybe I should start calling myself this!

There’s a lot of players even professional ones that always push on short forehand. You can work on fh flick or just work on tactics to play around it. The fh flick for me is just for variation and to keep my opponent honest even then I would always start with push like movement to fool opponent unless it’s a bit long.

All the things you say about the differences are true, but I also notice that the pro uses significantly more wrist movement during the stroke. Nice video. Thanks!

You're very good though self depricating. However the compare and contrast clarifies the finer details and how it can translate into success. Because techniques can be effective even if not performed at its best, bad habits can be easily formed. Your videos help develop the best possible technique for those who seek it

Probably Liam is using more waist strength too, it's just not visible. These comparison videos are great and very informative.

Greetings Tom - great timing for something I need to work on - by the way, I'm moving more now. My backhand flick is decent. My forehand flick, well, it still needs a lot of work.

I also do more wrist action at contact on both forehand and backhand flick shots which seems to help me.

You can try to flip the ping pong table so it becomes like a half square to practice(if it can)

The difference I noticed right away was the way Liams body movement is sorta bouncing into the ball while Tom loses a lot of energy by stretching for the ball and compensating by his upper body moving downwards at the point of contact with the ball (the kinetic chain has a loss of energy). Theres two ways of looking at this: either Liam is better because he is able to anticipate better where the contact point is going to be or Liam is better because he has developed a "technique" that is more efficient. I say its the first option, and that people often focus way to much on how a technique should look in isolation from the actual play of the game.

Dear Sir, Can we flick a very short service? The opponents I face generally have very low serves that either end at the centre of the table or at the very edge. Thank you for sharing so much knowledge it has made difference to the way I play my shorts. I plan to practice this technique every day now.

can we do flick to bottom spin or side spin ball?

Good

Your forgetting the hip action. Liam's right hip is back a bit and it goes forward during the stroke. Your right hip is forward and i think you get no hip action on the stroke. If you think of the flick as a mini forehand loop, this hip action, if timed well adds a lot of power to the stroke. The arm can relax more leading to higher racket head speed. Hip goes forward as the bat goes back. This creates a mini whip pattern. The body is moving the arm more. Power from the ground etc. As you step forward you need to keep your right hip back a bit. Not intuitive at all. Some other pros have more hip action too. Try this with a relaxed wrist and see how the power increases. Cheers

Are flicks good against backspin?
@TomLodziak Жыл бұрын
Yes, you can use flicks against short backspin balls, short no spin balls and short topspin balls.
@csc1671 Жыл бұрын
Does it also matter, that Liam comes up higher before he contacts the ball and comes back down again while he is sending it away? Looks very dynamic, but I can’t tell how much it matters for the shot.
@TomLodziak Жыл бұрын
Maybe that helps too. It's worth trying.
@nazunasapostle1stapostleof755 Жыл бұрын
From what i see. The upwards bounce he does helps as it gives him more space to flick the bat which means more accelerated flick meaning more spin. Him coming back down seems to just be getting back into a more stable position to prepare for opponent's return
@paulispaul1974 Жыл бұрын
The main problem is that you don't take your right foot to the vertical line where the ball will hit. You leave it in the middle of the table. So the only way for you to hit the ball is to fully extend your arm. And when you extend your arm to take any shot in table tennis, you lose control. It's something basic.
@tusharjamwal Жыл бұрын
you also started further away from the ball. So keep in mind that Liam didn't have to move much while you would have had to to get your right foot behind the ball.
@phildurre9492 Жыл бұрын
short version: if you have more control, you can hit harder. normal… It is not the other way around… his flick isnt better because he hits harder
