Hey Tom, idea in a similar vein. How about 5 T's with a species unique behavior/characteristic? Megaphobema robustum's booty defense, Hysterocrates gigas' willingness to fish for minnows, Idiothele mira being one of 2 trapdoor tarantulas etc. Also E. Pachypus has been on my wish list for YEARS. Have never seen them available unfortunately 😔

I’m fairly surprised to hear that the stout-leg baboon is fossorial. I thought it was arboreal like H.maculata and S. calceatum. Even though stoutness isn’t usually synonymous with being arboreal, but it does exist. A couple obscure T’s I’ve been eyeballing are Megaphobema mesomelus and Hysterocrates sp. “Hercules.” Also would like to get my hands on some more Pamphobeteus, since their genus is quite large in number and stature. Finally got a hold of Tliltocatl schroderi / Mexican black Velvet at an expo back in September, and the vender whom I always see at shows said that he had it for a while. Don’t know how i missed it. Anyway, I enjoyed the vid. Happy New Year!

Very cool to see a video on what I just listened to on the podcast! I bought two Santa Catalina slings this last summer and love em. Growing fast! Thanks for the video to back up the podcast! Otherwise all I'm hearing is names, not remembering them...and then never looking online at pictures cause I'm at the gym listening to the podcast rather than at home where one can click open a new page on the computer and do a search for images of that species. But anyhow, I did break down and picked up some new species this fall... Fearnot had some A. diamondbacks and A. prima vera slings so I got two of each. And I HOPE I'm raising them right... 3 are buried and I never see them. The fourth, A. diamondback, doesn't know he is supposed to be buried...he's always wandering around in full view! I'm guessing it will be several years before they put on any size as they are acting just like my A. chalcodes slings at this time. Anyhow, thanks again for the video to go with the podcast! Love these uncommon species Tom! You hooked me on the sp. Santa Catalinas, and I now love my little .75 inch slings I've had for a few months now! Not sure if you've ever heard of the species Plesiophrictus sp. Kerala before, but I highly recommend you check them out if you havent. They have those "sharp" legs that true spiders have (similar to B. horrida), but whats made me fall in love with these is how they hunt! Someone was supposedly selling them on Arachnoboards, but by the time that I found out, they were sold out. I NEED a male. My little Cotztelana sp. Puebla just molted yesterday! :)

I have two females of the Sericopelma sp. Santa Catalina...they are the right combination of big and pretty! Hope one day they'll be more common. My rarest (I think) is a Bonnetina sp. chamela. I could be wrong, but I don't see it for sale very often. Same with H. chilensis, although I feel like more people have them.
@TomsBigSpiders4 жыл бұрын
Hey, bud...Happy New Year! I agree completely. I don't understand why they are so underrated. Oh, that IS rare! It's funny, as I considered putting H. chilensis on there, as they are tough to find.

Had a male Eucratoscelus pachypus. The males are extremely tiny, more green and they don't have the thick back legs. I purchased it as a sling, but couldn't find a female for it. It also matured in like 1,5 year, loved it, was really laid back.

Hey Tom! Thanks for taking time to answer comments. I've been keeping for 2 years but am running into an issue with slings dying. I've lost 3 slings in the past 2 weeks and don't know why. I've lost a couple others without knowing whats going on but not this recent. I'm wondering if its possibly the substrate. I use topsoil, coco fiber and sand in a 60/35/5 mixture approximately. My slings all seemed plump and healthy when I found them. The sub stays somewhat moist and has cross ventilation on all sides of the enclosure. My question is about the sand. I've read that some ppl believe calcium is bad for Ts, and I didn't think too much into it but the sand I mix is calcium sand. Do you believe that could have anything to do with them passing? I'm going to rehouse the smaller slings to pure coco fiber today but if I find that the sand is bad for them I might have to rehouse everything. Thanks Tom!
@TomsBigSpiders4 жыл бұрын
Hey, Brian! You're most welcome! I've heard the about the supposed issues with calcium sand with inverts, so I've always avoided it completely. I don't know if the rumors have been proven, but regular sand is easy enough to find when I need it. What brand of topsoil are you using? I bought a brand that I never used before a few years ago, and it was contaminated with fertilizer and possibly herbicide. Personally, I would rehouse just to be safe.
@brianmartinez28514 жыл бұрын
@@TomsBigSpiders thanks for the reply. So when I went to rehouse them, I found 2 more slings in a death curl. My C fimbriatus was a goner, but my P ornata was barely moving its legs. I took it out of its jar and put it in a new one with just moist coco fiber and almost immediately came back to life. Its doing just fine now. I'm not sure what brand topsoil, just whatever they have at lowes that doesn't have anything mixed in it. My gf uses the same topsoil and hasn't had these issues. I keep more moist species than her so I use sand for water flow. After watching the P ornata come right back to life, and the slings she got the same day are doing fine, I'm positive it was the sand now. You'd think someone would have encountered this before and it would confirm that its bad for them. As always, thanks Tom.
