The GBB was my first T, and I had wanted one for almost 10 years after seeing these beauties in a documentary about tarantulas back in 2009. When I got the BF to finally agree to live in a house with a tarantula, this was my first and only choice. I of course had watched your husbandry video and read your notes on them and was THRILLED that they are so easy to care for. My Gumdrop has thrived under my care using your husbandry guide and even friends that aren't fond of spiders are amazed by her colors and the changes she's had with each molt. Thanks for making this video, I will be sharing with folks so I don't have to go and google "colorful tarantulas" by color to show them just how stunning these creatures can be.

Received a 4-inch P. sp. green femur female two days back, gotta thank you for spreading the word on these beautiful tarantulas! The greens are just about there. Spent HOURS (10?) in the pill jar it came in and eventually I decided to encourage her a bit with a poking stick. Poor poking stick, let's just say that. :P Otherwise quite laid back.

Caribena versicolor is one of my absolute favorites! Unfortunately it also happens to be the one tarantula I've had die on me, pretty sure she slipped, fell on the side of her water dish, and couldn't climb out because she was injured. I know it wasn't due to bad conditions cause I've had no issues with how i keep my Avicularia avicularia slings and also that versicolor had had at least 3 healthy molts in that enclosure. Drained the water from the dish and let her be for a couple days but she was motionless. She had been healthy and active up until that night when I found her in her water dish. Oh well. Had to happen eventually that I'd lose one. That was awhile ago. I think that may have actually been one of yours too! Because I bought it from fear not at tinley in march 2018! Beautiful species. Wish mine was still kickin, but the sacmate my friend has is still thriving! Anyways, great video! I love helping friends and family learn to appreciate the beauty of tarantulas! I've managed to even convince my parents that my G. pulchripes is pretty! They're not going to be joining the hobby anytime soon but I've definitely helped them see the beauty of these amazing animals!

Hi, Vicki! Awwwww...I'm so sorry to hear that. UGH. That's such a shame. :( I lost one of the C. versicolor slings that I produced earlier this year after a bad molt, and I'm still bummed about it. Sometimes, it's just out of our control. :( And thank you so much! And the G. pulchripes is one of my favorite species...I have four of them. haha That's awesome. Thanks again!

Excellent video, some really great choices in there. I honestly don't believe there's such a thing as an ugly tarantula, but I know there's a lot of people out there who'll disagree. Most of my friends aren't tarantula people, but you're right, they all agree that the colours on my spiders are beautiful. Nice work bro, and of course amazing specimens! Lol I was recently just talking to some people about the stereotypical "all just giant brown/black hairy spiders" concept, and even often do the same pulling out some pictures like you just showed! People may choose to not be of interest when it comes to the hobby sure, but I can't count how many times I've heard that common misconception pertaining tarantulas, and then you watch as they mentally get their legs pulled from under them as they see a golden blue leg baboon, gooty sapphire (or any of the Poecilotheria really), and the GBB of course lol! This at least helps gain more valid insight towards the hobby, and potentially helping more people be interested wich helps the hobby as well. I typically end up saying "I do have a species that is just all dark brown/black and hairy though......but it's hairs are a very daunting defense mechanism you don't want to mess with, and while mine is still at the sling/juvenile size, here's a picture of it fully grown" and show them the theraphosa stirmi mature female with a person next to it for size comparison! Lol I had one person ask me if I intend to put a leash on it and take it for a walk? Lol I thought that was an interesting idea, and very funny picturing that! "Good afternoon, can we have a booth, and preferably in a dim lit area in regards to my service animal?.......hello? Where did the hostess go?". Besides that amusing situation, thinking of trying to put a harness on a fully grown theraphosa doesn't sound much like a fun time!
@TomsBigSpiders
@TomsBigSpiders 5 жыл бұрын
YES! I love seeing the looks on their faces when I show them some of the colorful ones. "Wait, they come in PURPLE??" haha Many will actually soften their anti tarantula stance and ask more questions after that. Hahaha. Man, a tarantula support animal would be amazing. I might have to look into that... haha Thanks again!
@aracknoinfiniteeseekertrip9689
@aracknoinfiniteeseekertrip9689 5 жыл бұрын
@@TomsBigSpiders lol I agree. As far As the senses go the tarantula has a leg up (haha) on what dogs are capable of......might solve the whole "don't pet the support animals" thing as well. I actually picture Tim Allen from "jungle 2 jungle" with the kids pet goliath tarantula "matika". Lol I'll admit that, home alone, arachnophobia, and 8 legged freaks are strong driving forces for initially being interested in tarantulas! It's also important to watch for the things online that have been photoshopped, edited, and mislabled I've seen in regards to the color aspects with people new to the subject. I saw a xenesis photoshopped over in purple (the violet colored substrate made that very obvious) and is was labeled as a brazilian blue lol. But I agree about trying to get passed the barrier when people have a bias stance against taking in information pertaining to certain subjects for varying reasons. And even more so agree that the look on people's faces when they not only get to see the full spectrum of the color scene, but find alot of the stereotypically miscommunicated information is seen for the actual information is quite prominent! A good example of that is the venom/bite aspect. Yes if they decide to turn and bite they may be able to do some damage depending on the situation, but having it in their minds they are big bad kill in one bite venomous monsters couldn't be any farther from the truth! Lol I just the other day had to repeat to someone several times what a "dry bite" was, and they seemed to believe somehow that a tarantula (or any spider for that matter) couldn't NOT bite without doing that no matter how much I tried to explain the venom is mainly for eating, not as much self defence in most cases, let alone go on the attack. That led into explaining that the only attacking they do is in the interest of eating prey, and besides sustenance it's self defence only if simply avoiding the situation isn't possible wich is almost always what they move towards 1st! But if cornered in a situation where it's kill or be killed then perhaps people would see a mean streek, but however in those circumstances it will be provoked to be that way, and the opposing force deserves whatever injuries/loss that is incrued! Lol in those circumstances someone would be hard pressed to honestly state they would do any different really! Or any living thing that can actively defend themselves for that matter!

I love that little girl. There's just nothing quite like that species. The C. versicolor are found on some of the Caribbean Island of Martinique. The G. pulchra was supposed to be on this, but I ended up cutting the black and white tarantulas off. I may have to do another vid for them. Thanks, Leslie!

Far as I know there are no c versi elsewhere than martinique. But there are even 2 different kinds on that island, in the north an arboreal species, on the south a terrestrial. Don't know if they are genetically different or just their behavior. The ones in the hobby are all arboreals, if you ever find a keeper who has a terrestrial, please bloody his nose for poaching an endangerd species.

Tom I have a question and I always since I started keeping T’S ask you as you give me so much info and you videos taught me everything I know! I have two OBTs now in September they will be a year since I received them and they both were 1/4 inch slings so small anyway man they grew like wildfire and both molted a day apart from each other and both are males but now have hooks so I take it they are mature all my other T’S that are adult are female I was lucky my point is now that they are mature should I feed them differently as I normally feed 2 times a week my slings and once a week for my adults I feed guy loaded crickets and also about how long will they live now that are mature? I heard so many different things but I really want to ask you! Thanks Tom
@TomsBigSpiders
@TomsBigSpiders 5 жыл бұрын
@@nicoledonohoe2808 Hi, Nicole. It's funny, as I just recorded a podcast, and I was talking about how slowly my OBT grew. What temps do you keep yours at? I'm just curious, as this seems to be a species that can have widely different growth rates depending on the temperatures it's kept at. If you want to keep the males around for a while, keep them in a cooler location. This will help to extend their lives a bit. Also, you can continue feeding them once a week. Males tend to spend more energy wandering around in search of a mate, and they tend to get skinny quickly. You'll want to keep them well fed. As far as how much time they have left, I've had mature baboon males that keep eating last a year or more. I've had others that don't last as long. If you keep them a bit cooler (perhaps in a cooler room or on a lower shelf) and keep them well fed, a year shouldn't be too far fetched. :)

Thanks so much for the info as always mine are kept in my son Ryan’s room as it’s warm he has a a wall that’s shelves so we decided to keep all the T’S in his room as it’s warm so they are I want to say 75 degrees I live in NJ Cape May and Even now with the summer it’s really warm as Ryan hardly ever uses his air we were afraid of it being to cool with the air conditioner! I will now that I know bring all the T’S out in the living room!! We always thought the warmest place was best that’s why I asked you what is best ! last night both our male OBTs where transferred into there finally enclosures ofcourse I did it with the cardboard and the catch cup attached with the holes so we can use the paint brush to move them along and I must say it went well and I was shocked not threat posture lol because ours are nasty little buggers you move the enclosure and they are acting up The one is absolutely psycho lol I will say this the one was so crazy when I used the brush to very gently coasted him im he jump so quick To the other side an ran around the enclosures super fast my jaw dropped how quick lol but I let him calm down and tried again and he ran right up so all in all two OBT rehouses when pretty well !! Thanks again for all your help 🕷🖤

@TomsBigSpiders
@TomsBigSpiders 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, Ted! It's funny, as I just recorded my podcast and mentioned how some folks were offended or surprised that I didn't include a species they like. The idea was to do rainbow colors. As it was getting a bit long, I left off black and white. For the O. philippinus, I didn't like the footage I had, and when I attempted to get a better shot, she hid. My E. murinus spends most of his time hiding, and it didn't fit the ROYGBIV colors I was going for.
@tedmyers8005
@tedmyers8005 5 жыл бұрын
Tom Moran Ahh, I see. My E. murinus used to spend all of her time in her burrow. I got tired of looking at a hole, so I housed her into a terrestrial setup, and she’s webbed up the enclosure and now spends most of her time out in the open :)

You’re welcome! You have beautiful Ts! I had no idea you could keep p. Metallicas communally like that... makes for a beautiful scene! Do you ever have issues with them and what is the male/female ratio and do they breed freely or do you have a system to dissuade them from that? Sorry I know that is a lot of questions but I love the idea of communal enclosures when you can.. The balfouri is the only species I have seen live communally before so I am very intrigued....thanks for sharing your beautiful spiders!
