Jo Stafford and the Pipers in 18th Century garb. Wonderful.

In Mel Torme's book “Trap's the drum Wonder” (Buddy Rich) he wrote, “the band was made to wear powdered wigs and 18th century wool costumes. The hot lights needed for Technicolor cameras had the everyone in TD's band grumbling and Buddy grumbled the loudest.” He was unhappy at this time, he joined the Marines but was never called. He went down to the recruiter every week then found out that Dorsey made an arrangement with a Major to postpone Buddy from enlisting.

Buddy Rich did eventually join the Marine Corps and served his country proudly. No ands ifs or buts Buddy Rich was the greatest drummer ever. He drove that Tommy Dorsey Band like no other drummer could. Also Buddy was the driving force behind every big band he fronted or played. Bottom Line Buddy Rich was the drummers drummer.

All that is true, but he was the most arrogant, condescending prick to his band and most people in general.

That makes sense! And, looking at the clip again, I see Red Skelton coming in the door. Maybe I'm reading into this, but the musicians look a bit pissed at Red Skelton for putting them through it. And, Ziggy, if this is you replying, and that was you on trumpet--GREAT SOLO. This band had all monsters!

Are you any relation to the great Ziggy? For me, he has always been one of my all-time favorites! His solos with the Dorsey band are just electrifying- I wish I had been born much earlier to have seen & heard him live!

Hmmm...music and instruments from the "Swing Era..." costumes and decor from Mozart's time...one wonders what Amadeus would have thought of Dorsey's band and it's sound. Anyone want to pick that up and run with it?
@bobboscarato13132 жыл бұрын
Yes he would have loved it; unfortunately his life was too short!

My god - your comment is 5 years old and no one has picked it up and run with it to date! Okay, personally I think that Mozart would think the band was cool and would probably want to know more about the 'Swing' sound. He'd sit-in for a chorus or two, then more than likely would pick it up and run with it. I also think Buddy Rich and Wolfgang would be happy to lead each other very much astray..

Yep, silly garb but my god, what playing.

Whoever came up with that sequence had a pretty weird sense of humor--that music and those costumes don't go together at all, especially for people who would have been already familiar with the band. I'm still trying to get my mind around Buddy Rich playing flag-waver drums in a court where they would have been used to flute sonatas.

I wonder how much they had to pay Dorsey & the band to wear those outlandishly stupid costumes! Well at least the band sounds great. Ziggy Elman looks terrible.(I get the feeling he's not too thrilled about the way he looks either), but thankfully it doesn't affect his superb playing. Great work too by Don Lodice & Buddy Rich.
