If you haven't already, as soon as you can, Get Thee to a Tommy Concert! Videos are fine but there is nothing like seeing him in concert. It is a truly incredible, fun, and joyful experience. He loves the audience....probably as much as they love him!

The showmanship was so laid back with Travis and Thom Bresh. I wonder what Tommy is on, most of the time, for he sure can play subtly on occasion (as on that video of "Tahitian Skies").

Tommy is probably the greatest “guitar gymnast” alive but he is no where as near a “finger picking” genius as Merle Travis. That’s not a slam because Travis was and will always be the best at that style of guitar playing - he had more ability and skill using only his thumb and index finger than anyone before or after him.

Tommy is the musical embodiment of Hyperactivity Attention Deficit Disorder.
@jasoncavitt20436 жыл бұрын
Tommy is _very_ relaxed. He couldn't be a more laid back and fun-loving performer-it just so happens that his musical personality has a muscular, virtuosic character, but he's true to himself on stage. Being influenced by Atkins and Travis shouldn't result in sounding just like them, and Tommy wouldn't be Tommy without those highly articulated runs and emphatically punctuated rhythms. He's a complete musician, and a legend in his own right.
@iam26586 жыл бұрын
Jonathan Klass I will venture an opinion of the causation of his desire to play faster or differently than someone else. He is an artist who has an inner voice which calls him to interpret the song as he is drawn to do. Just as all notable artists do. To postulate that he is just showing off I believe is perhaps partially true but I suspect that a more accurate explanation for his choices is that he does that which pleases his sensibilities of what the song suggests itself to be when focused through His musical vision and abilities. When an artist develops a song for his/her enjoyment or performance what else should they do other than what their sensibilities pull them to do? I understand when individuals are not in agreement with an artistic choice. That is called musical taste. But to make judgements of the Source of their choices is highly problematic in my opinion. We humans make these judgements all the time and more times than not the judgements more accurately describes the observers consciousness rather than the observed.
@iam26586 жыл бұрын
And I failed to omit... he, like everyone who chooses to work on a thing, makes decisions and choices which make the thing interesting and enjoyable to themselves. Who would want to do that hard work and not make it interesting or fun or challenging for themselves? He follows his inner voice as all gifted artists does. I don't mean to criticize others theories or strive to appear wise. I just don't think we all are acting from the same place. The universe is a mirror. We experience and judge things heavily tinted with our own experiences and capacity to grasp a given thing. More times than not we see ourselves in our judgements...

Too much esspreso drinking before the gig. Groove and vibe go out the door at this level of frenzy. Oh, Tommy's a genius, but this is too frentic. And way too much high end on the guitar.
