@Esgles2 жыл бұрын
It was actually meant to be much darker, closer to Returns. WB forced it through many cuts. One of the things we lose is Two Face’s character arc. Harvey was Gotham’s leading DA and was Batman’s friend, helping to clear his name of the whole Penguin situation from Batman returns. After that, Batman asked Harvey to meet him on a rooftop. Harvey wanted to retire and settle down but Batman didn’t let him, saying that they are two sides of the same coin. Batman promised Harvey that as a reward for staying DA, Batman would protect him NO MATTER WHAT. We all know what happened after that and Two Face was sent to prison for Two years until he escaped by killing a prison guard, by getting him to play double or nothing, where Two Face’s coin landed on the bad side and he said nothing means you don’t even get to live. Throughout the book, Batman feels guilty about what happened and at the circus instead of saying I’m Batman was going to say something he had mentioned to Dent at the rooftop and actively tries to stop Harvey by throwing a gun to his head, hoping it will distract him from flipping the coin at the circus. Not only is Batman sympathetic to Harvey but Two Face follows his coin much more in this version, not minding when the good side turns up. He even tried to kill Riddler at one point after Face thought that he had successfully killed Batman. The infamous coin toss scene is still in there but as Face clearly explains “For each time Batman and chase pass me, it’s a new chance to kill him, requiring a new toss”. Finally, Face dies differently and it was Dent that chooses the death. After the “you’ve always been a good friend” line, Harvey flips and Batman still feeling guilty only uses something to knock the coin off tangent. Face catches it but before he can flip again to see what is the accurate result, Robin says he acts as though the coin is making the decisions for him and asks him to flip for himself. Face does and WITHOUT looking at the outcome smiles at Robin, says “you owe us one sunny!” and kills himself, making as what Batman says is the first real decision he’s made in years. If you want to see what this film could have been, pick up the Batman Forever book by Peter David or listen to the audiobook that I linked here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r2TPl3dohN6AfNU And yes, this video got a comment straight from “us”. My fan explanation for this Two-Face: After Harvey's accident, he began hearing a voice in his head. The voice of a criminal. A voice that began to talk to Harvey. The voice began to speak of the "true" nature of life & justice, proclaiming that random chance was the only true order. With how grief stricken he was, Harvey thought about his own tragedy & all the tragedies in the world, & began to understand & even agree with this philosophy, & adopted it himself. The voice then talked to Harvey of the gain & power to be won in crime. After listening to the voice, Harvey consciously, willingly, & eagerly "partnered" with the "other", forming a deadly team between the "two", & turned his life's goal into terrorizing & plundering Gotham City, & attempting to end Batman at every turn, with the "help" of this new "man". "Both" seemed to have equal say in all of Harvey's actions & referred to "themselves" as "we", both were equally cunning & in the plotting & execution of devastating crimes, & "both" took great joy & pleasure in causing as much panic & chaos as "they" possibly could, especially when it meant tangling with Batman as "both" hoped to make him meet his end. "Both" had methods, plans, & paths for schemes that "each" would bring to the table. When making decisions with the coin, "they" didn't choose between good & evil so much as choosing between two paths or choices that "they" had in "minds", & sometimes, "they both" would hope for a certain outcome or be satisfied with a certain path, e.i. killing Dick's parents & killing Bruce/Batman. Because of the accident, "both" of "them" wanted Batman dead; Harvey because he blamed Batman for what happened to him (or "them" as he puts it), & the "other" for "his" own reasons, so when the Riddler told "them" not to kill Bruce, "they" went about flipping the coin, with the "good" side being "not killing", & the "bad" side being "killing", & the "two" of "them" rigged it by flipping until "they" got the side "they both" wanted, & "they" could tell Riddler that it was out of "their" hands as "they" live "their" life by obeying the coin. During Harvey's (unknown) final moments, "they" are getting ready to take the shot, but Batman/Bruce reminded Harvey of his coin & his life mantra, presenting it like a friend helping him, so because of this, Harvey sympathized with Bruce & thanked him for being a good friend, stating, "Emotion's always the enemy of true justice".

You kinda hit over the head why I like this performance. It's completely opposite to every other role I've seen him in. It's not a great comics two-face, but its a spot on 'what if Two-Face was in the 60's series' Two-Face. They play up his split personality gimmick that also highly reflects in his base, his two arm candies, and to some degree his henchmen. As much as I like Two-Face, I can't hate this performance because its such fun and energetic from an actor typically not known for that while giving us a vision of a version of the character that never was. And yes, it works perfectly for Batman Forever becuase it's trying to find the right line between Burton's darker films, and the lighter family friendly direction WB wanted after the backlash of Returns. And you don't get much more family Friendly then the Adam West series. And yeah, I didn't care for the design of TDK Two-Face, he just doesn't look right to me, and he never really captured the charisma and personality that Harvey ususally has. He just feels like a wet fart of a two-face. LIke if Forever Two-Face is overdoing it, then TDK is under doing it.

I think the biggest different between Tommy Lee Jones and Aaron Eckhart, other than the stetics, is in what's the purpose of their characters.... -Eckhart's Two Face was more like a plot device than an actual character, the reason for Batman to take the "hard choice", to take blame on Harvey's murders to protect his image in order to save Gotham's soul..... Apart from that, all that is established is that he likes justice, he is incorruptible (until he gets corrupted), and that he has a temper.... In short, very vague character traits, right? -From the very beginning of "Batman Forever" is clearly set that Tommy Lee's Harvey IS a character. He has his manierism, he has his goons, his weapons, his crazy plans, etc.... You can see he hates Batman with the passion, and that the coin posses him completely. You may not like this version, or like it but think that Eckhart's version is better, but you can't deny Tommy Lee is one of the main characters in his movie, while Eckhart's version feels more like a secondary character. Thanks for reading so far.....now..... HAVE THE GOOD TASTE TO DIE!.....

I re-watched Batman Forever in the back-half of last year, and I ended up enjoying it far more than I expected: It’s a near perfect balance between the tone of the Burton films, and the 60s show, and if you view it as a big-budget version of the show, Tommy Lee Jones’ Two-Face, among other choices, make much more sense. Personally, I much prefer The Dark Knight Two-Face in terms of characterisation & overall performance… but Tommy Lee Jones’ works in the film he’s in, and the design is such a great translation of the comic book design. I’d love to see a Two-Face, one day, on screen that somehow melds the comic book/realism look perfectly… or just leans into the former, give me a classic Two-Face with the green or blue face, give me that black and white suit, give me the wild hair on the burned side, really commit to it.

I considered the versions of the Joker, the Penguin, and Two-Face in these films to be genuinely ugly and scary, which is why I welcomed the more hammy aspects of their acting; if they had played their roles completely straight, they would have come across not just as psychopaths but as inhuman monsters, which would not only have been terrifying but would have steered the BATMAN franchise too close to horror and the supernatural, which I didn't consider to be a good fit for the stories back then (although the styles of both the comics and the movies have certainly changed nowadays). Jack Nicholson even said that his goal when embodying the Joker had been to make the character villainous enough that kids would want to see him be punished in the end, but not so monstrous that they'd be too scared to watch him. Speaking of aesthetics, how about an analysis of Margot Robbie's three distinct portrayals of Harley Quinn, her costumes and makeup in SUICIDE SQUAD, BIRDS OF PREY, and THE SUICIDE SQUAD being different from one another in many ways. She goes from being a slightly grotesque "gang movie" caricature in the first film, to an outright clown in the second, and finally to what looks like almost a normal woman in the third.

It has been rumored for years that the Adam west Batman was going to originally use Harvey for the episodes True or False Face and Holy Rat Race that feature false face but they dreamed him to scary for kids I actually think it’s actually cause they didn’t have the effects capability in the 60’s to pull of the the acid burn part of his face like they could in 95 u are right in say that two-face from Batman forever is as close to what he could have been on Batman if they actually used him instead of false face

Tbh, I like this version of Two-Face too. That being said, I think how Mr. Schummacher should have written the character's portrayal would be like this: Two-Face would constantly be at odds with each other, just like in the comics. There could be scenes in the movie where his good side ( Harvey ) would constantly argue with his bad side ( Big Bad Harv/Two-Face ).

Honestly, when it comes to attire, I think you can have both takes on him work, just at different times in his post transformation into Two-Face Early on, immediately after scarring, when his focus is more on his rage and revenge, he'd adopt a look similar to Eckhart, just a simple business suit (with of course one side burned), and later on, following one or two escapes from Arkham and fully embracing the supervillain role, he'd adopt something more along the lines of Jones's attire We can also apply this to the scarring itself (especially in my personal take on Two-Face). We'd have the bright colors and fleshy look (although my version would be more red than purple to represent constantly inflamed skin) of Jones and the comic accurate missing eye lid exposed teeth plus the semi realistic look of a burn victim (though mine's more melty and based on real acid attack victim pics than fire) that we got from Eckhart

Clint Eastwood was in talks, possibly even cast to play Two-Face in the 60s Batman show! It fell through, but that would've been the cold and calculated performance we needed; especially as a guide to Tommy Lee Jones in Forever. Poor choice of casting, he didn't enjoy his time on set, and he had no idea what he was doing as Harvey Dent.

Lately it's felt like more and more often I just want a video done on the two batman telltale seasons especially if two-face is your favorite of all time and he was everywhere in season 1

What bums me out is that Jones missed an amazing opportunity to play the character as dark opposite the light-hearted Riddler. They would’ve contrasted so beautifully, and Jones already HATED Carrey. He wouldn’t have even had to act.

Also, have you read Grant Morrison's Arkham Asylum graphic novel? I'd be interested in your take on Harvey's appearance in that story.

"If the Bat wants to play, we'll play!" A lot of people say he didn't research the character, but I have seen an interview where he talks about discussing the character with Bob Kane who felt he grasped the character really well. I think the broad acting was due to Joel's direction and not Tommy's instinct. Despite that direction, I do believe Tommy was able to bring nuance to the role, plus his eyes radiate a dangerous intensity which convinces me his character really escaped from a mental institution for the criminally insane. Is it the right kind of insanity? No. But he did what he could in spite of Schumacher. I also think darker moments (either from the novelization or behind the scenes footage) that were cut in order to make the film lighter (and to direct attention to Carrey more). Despite the lack of these darker moments and campier tone, I always posit that he is the only genuinely scary villain from Schumacher's films which is down to Tommy being an amazing actor. He gave Schumacher the camp the director was going for while successfully bringing a palpable sense of threat to the role. I continue to watch this film mainly for Tommy (and Michael Gough's Alfred) as I despise pretty much everyone else's performances in the film (especially Carrey). BTAS has the best Two-Face, but I prefer Jones over Aaron Eckhart's afterthought Two-Face (Which is Nolan's fault not Eckhart). my TWO cents. "Have the good taste to die!"

I hear ya. But this falls apart when you start to compare Jones to Aaron Eckhart‘s Two-Face. It’s the epitome of apples and oranges. This video could’ve been about the under appreciated job Tommy Lee Jones does when taking a look back at the film, enhanced by your obvious lifelong fondness for this interpretation. There is no need to unrealistically bash Christopher Nolan‘s visual interpretation. Your criticism of that version doesn’t hold up because you fail to acknowledge that Christopher Nolan was going for (and you didn’t even mention this word) realism. When you factor that in it makes sense that the Dark Knight version wasn’t fuchsia… it makes sense that that version looked like a burn victim. You even say it would be hard to forget somebody whose face was half pink as if seeing Nolan’s Two-Face in real life wouldn’t leave an impression on you… Still, good video. I recently went back and rewatched this movie specifically because I wanted to give another look to Jones’ performance. I still appreciate it.

If Tommy Lee Jones was Two-Face in "The Dark Knight", I think he wouldve been in competition with Heath for the Oscar. He has such a great "Lawman" presence (Just watch "The Fugitive), he truly could've given us something special

Watching Vee compare & contrast J.N.'s Joker & T.L.J.'s Two-Face made me realize that said amazing actors could seemingly change roles & STILL be incredibly stellar renditions of said characters, e.g. T.L.J. as The Joker & J.N. as Two-Face... What do y'all think? (Great analysis per usual, Mr. Infuso!)

Heh. I often remark that I thought Tommy Lee Jones was great as Cesar Romero's Joker.
