+mistacadogan Definitely no nonsense, no measuring and making math like crazy like other videos and in short I've learn a lot in a simple video like this one and the best part... simple tools that I actually have in hand... awesome video....!!

This is one of the best I've seen so far.. I've been looking around for ideas on how to go about to make a workbench. You've used no machine tools, no saw's no routers no planers no sanders and nothing.... just sand papers, a manual saw.. and driller and the impact driver, and yet the workbench as I could see is sturdy and simple and perfect...

When I told my wife I'm was going to make a work bench for the new workshed, she said I would never manage it. I showed her the video and she reckoned even she could do it!One of the keys to success is to plan all the required lengths and get the timber yard to cut them as you get good square cuts. Whilst it may have only taken 20 mins for Tommy it took me 5 hrs, but then I'm no tradesman. In the end it looked great and was really sturdy. I'm chuffed to bits and I certainly earned some brownie points from Mrs H.......Thank you Tommy - keep up the good work

The measurements depend on the size you wish to make your bench. In the video Tommy makes a bench 1800mm long x 800mm wide x 900m tall. I made mine to fit a space at 1800mm long x 600mm wide x 900mm tallso the measurements I needed would have been different to the video. I also added a "splash back " around the back and one side. Finally I did not use the same size timbers as they were not available in my local DIY shop. I used 45mm x 90mm for the legs, 45mm x 70mm for the top frame and 20mm x 145mm for the top and side bracings. Remember these are planed (actual) dimensions not nominal sizes. For the video size, using the timber sizes I bought (which were plenty strong enough for my use) you would need the following lengths:1. 4 off legs at 45 x 95 x 880mm2. 2 off long lengths for top frame 45 x 70 x 18003. 4 off ( 2 for ends and 2 intermediates) short lengths for top frame 45 x 70 x 5104. 7 off (for the table top) 20 x 145 x 1880 - this will give an overhang of 72.5mm on the long side and 40mm on short side, assuming a gap of 5mm between planks.5. 1 off (for the long bracing attached to legs) 20 x 45 x 1750 6. 2 off (for the short bracings attached to legs) 20 x 45 x 510This is one example of many, the actual measurements will depend on the size you want to make the bench and the size of the timbers available to you locally. Good luck in your endeavours.

Again GREAT VIDEO Here in the US we have 4x8 plywood. I would make mine 8 feet long and use 3/4 doubled smooth top plywood for the top, laying the first one down and using a lot of screws to add strength and some rigidity. The top layer of plywood I would screw from underneath and then I would laminate a white fiberboard top to it to keep the top smooth and screw free and easier to clean or sanded and stained and urethaned it. It also makes the top easier to replace Thank you for a GREAT video

This is has got to be the most practical workbench design i've seen. It's very straight forward. While this might not be the ideal workbench for "fine" woodworking, it's got all you need to get started, you can always build your fancy bench later when you got the skill and experience. Also this is a great design for just a general workshop table.

I'm a rookie when it comes to projects like these and I followed along perfectly even from America :) - what I wished the video had were specific number of pieces of wood for rookies like me - had to convert from Centimeters to Inches but all in all this video worked perfectly for me. I love the bench - I added a bottom storage after to place my circular saw - truly happy I found this video - THANK YOU!

A proper chippy would put mortice and tenon braces on the legs, this table would soon start to wobble and the bolts would become loose ,if you put sprung washers on legs this would help. If your going to spend a load of money on nice new woold put some proper joints on the bench and it will be a lot more use.

Great video! You moved along very quickly & slowed when there were important points. It kept my interest & attention. After reading other comments, I agree. Metric seems much easier to use than fractions!! Ill have to buy a metric tape measure & try it. One thing I would have liked to see, especially since you were 75% of the way there anyway would have been a lower shelf, using the lower supports as the start and adding some additional support for them.

Very neat work, and very clear explanation. I especially like how you go out of your way to use simple tools, so people don't feel like they need fancy tools to do simple things just because a professional likes to use the fancy tools to save a few minutes. Would you use any finish on bench like this? Polyurethane? Some sort of oil? Seems like that might make it last longer in a possibly moist unheated garage or shed or wherever people put these things.

This is the work bench i built, it all went to plan except i had to scale it down a bit, it's simple to build and solid. The only alteration i made was to put the coach bolts one through each (external) side of the leg rather than 2 on just the one side. I think this is making it a little more solid than the one in the video. But good vid all the same and thanks for the inspiration. I'm sure my workbench is going to last for a long long time!

attach more cross 2x4s underneath the table top. then have 2" screws ready. you drill the screws upward into the underside of the table top. you have to countersink the screws half way up (1.75") into the 2x4, which will enter the table top .25". You can use two different size drill bits to accomplish it, you don't need a special countersink bit. I recommend a thicker table top if you plan to do this, so there's less chance to mess up w/ screw come through the table top surface.
