You missed a couple of things in the video. In the first scene (the football game), the dynamic between the group is explained: Tommy is pushed by Renton and his calls for help go unheeded. This shows the group does not help Tommy, and actually causes him harm. In the next scene, Tommy is sitting with his girlfriend. Trainspotting is about addiction, and Tommy's addiction is to his girlfriend. When she leaves him, he replaces her with a heroin addiction. These little extras are why Trainspotting is such a great movie.

Tommy's death really helps put into perspective Renton's luck in escaping AIDS, overdosing, or dying a myriad of ways related to the junkie-life. While T2 elaborates on the shortcomings and disappointment of choosing "regular life," Tommy is perhaps the best cautionary tale of choosing heroin as an alternative. In the beginning he steals Tommy's sex tape, and though he knows that's what's causing Tommy's relationship to collapse, he doesn't fess up or return it. Later Tommy, broken by the loss of his girlfriend, turns to Renton for Heroin, which Renton gives him. Finally, Renton is the one who gives him the money to continue his addiction.

Superb video essay. I've been very Trainspotting heavy last couple weeks, I've just hit 40 & it's 28 years since I saw the 1st one in a cinema. I didn't appreciate T2 at first, I thought it relied too much on the 1st film, but now I think it's a masterpiece, as, much like Renton, I am a tourist in my own lifetime having been off work for a year with depression/anxiety, etc. Probably not helped by the amount of pills, ket, acid I did in the 90s/00s. I've been looking for footage of when Mark goes back to see Tommy & the state of his flat, this is the only footage I've found. Renton must secretly feel very guilty, that it was he that stole the sex tape that led to Tommy/Lizzy breaking up & it was he that bought him his 1st hit. I've blamed myself over things not quite like this but similar, where what I did possibly started a chain reaction to a larger event. Thing is, who's to say what happened wouldn't have happened anyway. Tommy/Lizzy's relationship couldn't have been that strong if it couldn't get throu the sex tape incident & theres hints earlier in the club scene that "it's Iggy Pop or her" - if she was understanding she would realise he had already bought the tickets & was his fav singer, or if he loved her enough he wud have binned off going to the concert. An interesting topic & something I've long thought about. Hope the guys that made this video get to see this comment.

Tommy would have probably been fine if he had either never tried heroin or never tried to get back with his girlfriend. Lets not forget that he first tried it because of the break up with her, gets aids, and catches toxoplasmosis from the cat. If he had decided to stick it out with her rather than trying heroin he would have never gotten aids, and if he would have just forgotten about her afterwards, he would never have gotten toxoplasmosis from the cat. Tommy would have been better off not trying heroin, yes, but he would have been better off as a heroin addict than flip flopping around like he did.

I would add to this at the 7:00 mark, the passing of the money is a part that only a junkie or former junkie could ever understand, with opioids all that matters is having them. For Mark, he is giving Tommy the money because he knows that in his new world... the money means nothing, some bread, some milk, paying a landlord... but in Tommy's world that money has an entirely different biological meaning. As someone who has gotten off a 500mg morphine a day habit, I often say "if I lose my wallet and someone uses my card or takes my cash - I want it to be a junkie down on their luck. Because I know they will appreciate it more than anyone else." It is messed up but you know that a few quid only goes so far, but a Junkie makes it last, take 20 quid off me, I know they'll be thinking "Wooaaahhhh-weeee I can get heroin AND eat food tonight." As the movie shows this compulsion is stronger than feeding your own child, the Junkie is the most selfish, the most giving, the most understanding, the most narcissistic of all gods creatures. I don't miss it, but I do look back with fondness, much like Renton glad to have survived it, glad to be done with it, but it is an entirely different way of life few can truly understand.

The movie is a hygienically digested version of the book, somewhat like a sanitized collection of Begbie's anecdotes to tell your mother or sister before introducing him to her. It's like Jaws with a dolphin instead of the great white one. In the book, there is much more death, hatred, racism, sectarian violence, and more characters that are either omitted from the movie or molt into one. Tommy's death was actually the death of another character, Matty. The reason why Tommy got infected and nobody else did was Tommy wasn't doing junk with Mark's crowd. The goriest scenes from the book would not have been permitted into a British movie not then not ever. Like the one of Mark whistling ''Foggy Dew'' at the army funeral of his older brother Billy who got killed by the IRA in Nothern Ireland serving in the British army and Mark's subsequent confrontation with his Protestant mother's relatives and having sex with his dead brother's pregnant girlfriend in the bathroom. Spud's half-Hindu uncle being beaten by a group of skinheads. A man infected with HIV stalking and making friends with the junky dying of AIDS who raped and infected his girlfriend just to kill him in the cruelest way possible. Swannie begging in the street impersonating an amputee from the Falkland War after having his leg removed due to drug-induced thrombosis and taking money from a mourning old lady who lost her only son in the war. The list goes on and on. It simply couldn't have been filmed as it was written. Same as the real culprits never get tracked down all the way to the Parliament. Or the Senat for all it's worth.

Renton indirectly kills Tommy by sabotaging his relationship through stealing the sex tape and then getting Tommy hooked on heroin. Renton is such a pompous, selfish prick who never shows any real remorse about what he did to Tommy. He’s just as bad as Begbie and Sick Boy in many ways despite his superior attitude to them.

Watching as a kid the whole thing with Tommy horrified and really upset me. It was the tragedy of seeing the person who was healthy and vital diminish so horribly and so completely. It’s not just that he died a junkie or even the AIDS, it’s the abject loneliness, alienation and vilification he must have gone through that sticks in my mind. The disease itself engenders no pity, empathy or compassion, especially where addicts and gay people were concerned. Tommy is the face of many a young life, snuffed out in isolation and agony., I hope they all found the peace and harmony which eluded them in life 😭 ❤

I wouldn’t say that the scene with the group mugging the tourist would’ve been the first time he was with the group doing that sort of thing

If read more of his books, Glue. HIV plays a part in it also to show that injecting any drug has consequences. In the seen Tommy is lead in drug taking with out taking control. Renton is an administrator of the drug and is skilled in shooting up{experienced}. Injecting any drug is another ball game and no matter who you are nobody escapes it. I think if I was put in this position my character would a mix of Spud and Renton. Thank god I never used herion and one of the reasons is because of this film. It serves you straight up, what herion addiction is like.

What music is playing at the 2nd half of the video (when the baby’s death happens)? It sounds familiar

Adagio for strings by Samuel Barber. It is the theme from Platoon....

Tommy does meth rarely in the book but after the opioid epidemic. I think we can all agree, that, heroin, meth crack and even alcohol are bad. When the book and the movie came out the question posed is the government and authority wrong about these drugs seeing they were wrong about weed, lsd, and ecstacy. Nope that stuff is bad for you but if the government didn't lie across the board the epidemic might not have happened

the speed they talk about in the book and that spud does in the movie aint actually crystal meth, its an amphetamine which is what we use in the uk.
@MrJohnnyshakes2 жыл бұрын
@@mayavale4926 I don't understand what you're trying to convey. We have crystal meth in the states as well. I call it all speed. Ice, clear, shards. My brother was really addicted to it.

I absolutely LOVE Trainspotting,, it's my favourite movie ever.. But one big mistake that stands out immensely is that you never see any track marks on any of them.. When u see Renton hitting up from the position of the syringe it goes straight into his inside elbow.. If these guys had such hardcore habits they'd have fkt those veins up easily by this point.. We also see a lack of marks when Renton gets his HIV test... Now I've pointed it out you'll never be able to unseen it.. Sorry..!!

The worst thing about Trainspotting is that you can only experience it for the first time only once
