the problem with those figures is they're just *too* detailed that they just look... wrong. Even with specially molded pieces Lego officially uses, they don't use too many and most importantly, they still maintain a generally lego like look. These use way to many custom pieces and those pieces don't look like lego. Especially with the head pieces. The official minifigure head has a look that helps with making it recognizable, and those figures just ruin that. In general, even custom molded pieces for lego figures maintain the general shape of a standard minifugure piece. These deviate too much from that general shape that it just doesn't work and thats the problem

I agree, I buy a few knock off figures occasionally (not hyper expensive customs because I don’t have the money) but I am very picky on what I pick up, if a figure doesn’t look like lego, whether that be a custom mould that just doesn’t work (like a lot of fnaf minifigs i’ve seen) or they just look bad like a lot of big gigs do, personally my favourite way to represent the lizard is through the use of the lego batman movie killer croc, it’s not perfect but it works, plus my display is a combination of mcu, comic, and other origins so it doesn’t matter if it’s not faithful to a specific version

@@Boricua_User146 Yeah! Exactly! When you add in to many custom parts and extra details, it just becomes a kind of lego uncanny valley because it stops looking like a lego minifigure. Stuff like the death trooper armour & the hagrid fig don't change too much overall from a standard minifigure. There's still enough of the general shapes and design elements of a minifig that it can be easily recognized as one. The custom minifigs he shows off here just, aren't. There's to much deviating from or covering up the minifig elements that it just looks wrong

In my opinion the lizard doesn't looks bad, depending on the version you are adapting. The one from the movies is similar to the minifigure presented here, while the one from the animated show from the 90's isn't similar and should require a special mold for the head. Meanwhile, Ultron is extremely differente and I believe it REALLY needs a special mold for the helmet. Despite that, I prefer lego sets with little prints in the legs and arms rather than customs with tons of detail

@@ProcrastinatinZombie Being critical about it yeah, a lot of times they should implement more molds and stuff to make their figures more unique and detailed, but at the same time, there's a sweet spot u know?, if it goes too far it stops looking like a lego and looks like a little statue of a character, which should be entirely it's separate thing, if I want an Iron Man lego minifig, I want it to distinguish itself as a Lego figure, and to nicely blend with my other Lego minifigs, which is what they currently achieve with simplicity on the mold, and detailed prints As a greater example, I agree the mark 1 could use a different helmet mold, one that loos more flat and more like the bucket type of helmet the mark 1 had in the movie, also adding some shoulder bulkiness could be nice, but starting to add accesories to the arms, then the legs, then get rid of the details and volume in the printing in favor of molding those, yeah, we went too far

These are my problems with most customs: - Printing where LEGO doesn’t (inner legs, back of the legs, hands, etc.) - Overmolding a piece (tons of panel lines, parts having too many elevation changes (like the Iron Man chest plate going out then back in for the arc reactor), etc.) - Adding molded pieces where they don’t need to or shouldn’t be (gun holsters on legs, leg armor, arm armor, sometimes stuff that goes on the wrists, etc.) - Overly detailed prints (too many lines, trying to cram EVERY element of a design onto a figure, etc. This just makes the figure look too busy) - Non standard prints for faces (many of these just look like bad bootlegs and don’t fit with the LEGO style at all) - Added articulation (knees, elbows) - Non standard colors (if LEGO doesn’t produce it, customs shouldn’t use it) These problems usually compound on each other and make them look less and less like minifigures and more like some cheap bootleg action figure TRYING to be a minifigure. I can appreciate the amount of time and skill that goes into these, but I rarely see customs that actually fit well into the LEGO style. Too many people are obsessed with trying to make the most hyper detailed figures possible, and not enough are trying to make something that feels official.

If people want to make highly detailed custom minifigures and other people want to buy them, there's no issue. In my opinion, the LEGO style is a little cartoony. You’re not going for completely realistic or high detail because (as seen in 2004/5 Harry Potter sets) it looks weird and off putting. I can’t deny that Ultron minifigure is very impressive, but at a certain point it stops feeling like a Lego figure and more like an action figure if that makes sense. With all of these movie accurate details it just makes his claw hands that Lego characters have look really out of place. I don’t want to bash the people that made the figure, it’s really good, but I think the Lego aesthetic/style was kind of lost somewhere in translation. I’m not against detailed figures, and I do think the official Ultron figure should have a little more bulk to it, and I’m all for seeing Lego figures with more detail, but I think this is a little too far away from the Lego style

I'd say it's time for Lego to make taller figures too, to match the height difference for certain characters in movies. To me, the biggest issue with trying to adapt a character like Ultron into a minifigure… is using a minifigure body. Ultron isn't a person, he's an AI with a robot body. His minifigure should be specifically made that way, like lego does for the Battle Droids for Star Wars. Don't go all out with the robot feel, but enough to where you're not limited by the two inaccurate size legs Lego has produced. Still use a minifigure head and arms, but everything else shouldn't be in the same proportions or design as a plain minifigure since Ultron doesn't fit the base human silhouette. He's taller, his shoulders are huge, he's got a larger upper torso, etc, so you shouldn't use a plain minifigure body for characters like him. That is one thing lego needs to improve on; adapting humanoid characters who don't fit the general human silhouette at all, like the Lizard and Ultron.

I don't like intricate moulded details for arms and legs and even torsos. A chest plate with printed detail looks great but a chest plate with moulded pipes and wires is too much. For me at that point, it doesn't look like Lego anymore. There's a balance of getting accurate to the character and IP to a degree but the Lego style and io needs to come through otherwise I may as well just buy a action figure and not this weird in-between. I love custome moulds for hair pieces and helmets but I still need them to fit Legos style, so no overly sharp points and all that. To me excessive moulding on arms legs and torsos end up looking cheap as it looks like there's no consistent identity. It's like if Minecraft started using hexagons and pyramid shapes with human shaped hands and feet. It started to look uncanny and budget made despite technically being more detailed

(i'm sure there's a good reason for it.) i also know it's FAR too late for lego to redesign the mini figure at this point. but if those connections could be easily swapped out, and they gave us more modular parts like those thighs, and maybe brought back the 4-armed torso, and some new arm molds… man, kids would be thriving

I like custom figures as novelties, but I really don't think they're the way Lego should be going. Moulded pieces are used when necessary like with ahsoka's tendrils or hagrid's body, but the pieces are always designed in a way that keep with Lego's more simplistic style. Things like the Ultron head and the lizard legs, while more accurate to the source material, just aren't in keeping with Lego. Lego isn't supposed to be fully accurate, it's a stylized version of something we're familiar with, it's its own style entirely so I don't see why we should take that away from it by trying to make it more accurate by giving figures specific pieces that take away from the Lego look.

People get way overly sensitive about detail when it comes to minifigures. If anything deviates from their precious little bubble of what they personally think "feel like" lego or doesn't look exactly like something that would come in an official set, the amount of vitriol directed towards it, even though literally no one is forcing them to buy it, is insane. Heads up to the bunch of you that are parroting "just buy action figures", or some similar shit: the people that buy these customs buy them because that's what they want - highly detailed custom minifigures. They're not buying action figures instead because that's not what they want. You're all welcome to your individual preferences, but for something like this it's enough to just say "not my thing" and walk away. What made LEGO Constraction so appealing was that it's the art of using LEGO pieces to build a character model how you desire. It's something that isn't possible with the Minifigure, given how they usually aren't the focus build. But Constraction themes like _BIONICLE_ and _Hero Factory_ strive in making the characters the builds. And LEGO sets are usually supposed to be a building toy, not a near-pre-assembled action figure. (The CMF sets basically have to rely on blind-packaging and repeat purchases to even make a profit from all of the new molds, and stop specific figures from shelf-warming or getting scalped.) It's just a shame that people still have the sentiment that "Constraction isn't real LEGO", "BIONICLE isn't real LEGO", and "LEGO should stay in their lane and not make action figures", yet, they'll obsessively rage over Minifigures. And these brick-built action figures and mechs for Minifigures we are getting with today's LEGO Super Hero sets aren't cutting it out for me. For anyone reading this, try opening up BrickLink Studio and build some Constraction sets like the 2001 _BIONICLE_ Toa Mata, or the 2012 _Hero Factory_ sets. Then try using those Technic, _BIONICLE,_ and _Hero Factory_ pieces to build your own character.

CCBS was honestly one of my favorite additions to the catalog of pieces, and sure, it was missing a few pieces to aid with System compatibility (like shell pieces with studs or anti-studs instead of the panel detailing and the two peg holes, that would've made it near-perfect to me), then again constraction was designed off Technic, not System. Mixel-style joints were designed off System, however, it's just a shame they discontinued all three lines that introduced and heavily use them (Bionicle, Hero Factory and Mixels, there were Star Wars constraction figures) in favor of the new System figures.

I think Lego could really stand to benefit if they introduced a torso piece like the one Mr. Incredible has in the game, where it fits on standard minifigure legs and isn't as big as a big fig, but is still noticeably larger than that of your standard figure. Obviously, they'd use it for Mr. Incredible were they ever to release more sets from that theme, but I think it'd help with a number of other themes; for example in this video, I'm slightly bothered by the Lizard minifigure just because he is too small, in my opinion. It doesn't feel right that Lizard, who is absolutely huge in the movie, is the exact same size as Spidey in the set, so giving him a different torso would really help differentiate them, in my opinion. Not sure it would help with Ultron, but I think he could just use a special helmet and shoulder mold-he's big, obviously, but he doesn't really strike me as needing to be significantly taller than the standard minifig. Obviously, they should keep the big figs for characters like Hulk and Thanos, but I think it'd be useful to have an intermediate size for figures.

IMO I think it should be a right balance between custom molds and minimalist design. What makes lego mini-figure works is that they are simple and easily recognisable, adding too much unecessary detail create this dissonance that feels uncanny to many.

The problem with customs can sometimes be that, with all that detail, are the customs still even usable? Also, are they fragile? I have a been of offbrand lego and a lot of the minifigs have hands that can just barely attach to normal lego which I find really annoying. This video has some great points about what lego should be doing better and it should be lego doing this because their plastic is so much more durable than what customs usually have.

I don't get why people don't like the custom figures. I love the intricate details and it looks way better than the stuff lego likes to make. I collect custom spiderman figures, anime and iron man minifigs and the level of detail is amazing. Yes they don't fit with logos design but I prefer just getting the custom ones cuz I don't want to have to buy a set i dont like for a minifig I do like or spending an insane price for a minifig on bricklink. Custom is better.

When they start looking like action figures with over exaggerated detail, just go buy some minimates if you want detailed Lego-like figures or better yet go the whole hog and buy a marvel legend. LEGO figs were always supposed to be simple, this demand for overspecifed detail is what brings the figs down.

If people want to buy miniatures then they'll buy miniatures. The people buying detailed customs are doing it because that's what they want. Quit trying to tell them what you think Lego is "supposed" to be and let people enjoy things.

@@snoopy4749 you didn't just give your opinion though, you told everyone that likes these kinds of customs to instead buy something different that they might not even be looking for, and then made an objective statement about what Lego is "supposed to be". Equally I can ask why you're crying about customs having lots of detail when no one's telling you that you have to buy them. Your opinion is that they're not for you because you prefer a simpler style. That's fine, but that's where the validity of your comment ends.

@ are you ok? Did I hurt your feelings? 😆 I don’t understand why you’re so upset (and you most definitely are) about what I said. Perhaps my words stung you a bit more than you’re willing to let on, which is completely ok you btw. Yes, i stand by what I said if you want overly detailed versions of characters just go get actual figures with said detail. LEGO dogs that start looking like bulky statues just lose all point in being a minifigure, plus most customizers charge ridiculously high prices that, for the the same price you could just buy an action figure with detail, sculpt and accessories that are designed for that particular line.
@luke_4252
@luke_4252 Күн бұрын
@@snoopy4749 putting "and you most definitely are" in brackets doesn't actually make me upset you know. I can take issue with what you're saying without it getting to me, you're way overestimating how much your opinion matters to me. And how about you don't tell other people how to spend their money? Seeing as they want customs, not action figures (should be obvious from the fact they're buying customs not action figures - try to keep up), then let them. What you think they'd be better off doing isn't relevant, since you're not them. Why are you crying that other people are buying things they want, simply because those things don't fit your arbitrarily restrictive take on what Lego "should" be? You're so upset at these little pieces of plastic existing you feel the need to tell other people that they shouldn't be buying them because you personally don't like them. Think about that next time you try to make a snippy comment about me somehow being upset here.

For me customs having too much detail is the problem. Lego is great at branding and has a formula down for making unique minifigures that do not stand out from other figs, show up with a super detailed Captain Rex next to my other Star Wars figs and Rex stands out and looks 3rd party.

I like seeing Lego break outside of the traditional minifigure format, but a lot of customs out there really overdo the printing and molding detail. They just shove as much detail as possible onto a vaguely minifigure-esque silhouette. The whole point of a minifigure is to be a cartoonish abstraction of the character. Some characters definitely warrant more unique treatment but there's plenty of ways to do that without breaking the visual style completely. I know the "If you want hyper accurate detail just buy an action figure" refrain gets said a lot in these conversations but that doesn't make it any less true.

I think Lego is lazy for not making figures accurately and sometimes just making totally different from the source like Hawkeye, what the hell are those glasses? But this kind of customs that take off the vanilla style makes it feel uncanny with that level of detail. The right way(for me) is the balance, make more models, and why not new whole figures, but respect the Lego design philosophies. The only detail that I would change/add is a little color dot in the eyes, just like Jordy made in a custom of Bruno from JoJo.

My rules for buying customs are: They need to use proper colours, no over detailing, no printing where Lego wouldn’t, no moulds not made by Lego unless they are slight modifications that stay in the style (eg, GCC Arc Trooper helmet is a modified Lego helmet), you can’t just break Lego’s rules (knees and elbows on figs, gore, easily breakable parts, etc), they need to still focus on making it look like Lego (most customs are too much like action figures).
