I nearly had to take my headphones off. Never felt like that before! Something about the song got me worked up, cold sweats! Never experienced that before... it wasn’t nice
I listened to Ne Obliviscaris Forget Not tonight and by the end of it, I felt shaky. The drums is what I think caused it. I just wanted them to stop.
It wasn’t nice to listen to, but the fact they are able to do that to me says something about the song! Incredible!
At the time, I totally forgot about the superb guitar work at the beginning, the bass player, the Violin (fiddle maybe?), everything coming together and creating layer upon layer of sound. Stunning song.
Let me know what you thought of the song. Are there other songs by these I should be listening to?

The song is about lost friends, people the band members knew who died over the years. It's an emotional journey trying to convey sadness, anger, despair and then the anthemic call to never forget those you've lost. I'd say your reaction means they nailed it! I hope you're doing ok! That was a hell of a ride, huh?

This is one of the most interesting reactions I’ve seen to this song. I personally had the opposite effect. When I listened to this song I shed tears because of how beautiful I found the song to be. And personally, this is on of my go to songs to calm down when I’m anxious. Even though it’s such a heavy song, it somehow manages to calm me down.

I've never seen someone have an anxiety attack from music. It probably doesn't help that you're listening to it through Beats which are magnifying the bass. I hope it's obvious I say this in a positive light. I've been in and out of hospitals multiple times for panic attacks so I can relate to the feeling.

I completely understand your reaction, I remember perfectly the first time I heard Ne' Obliviscaris. It was in 2019 on a video game map and it was the song "Painters of the tempest part 2" I remember that I hated most of the song, because the drums and vocals weren't for me, I wasn't used to it, but the The last 6 minutes of the song were beautiful and impacted my life, they completely destroyed me from an emotional point of view, so much so that I insisted on listening to it again and again and nowadays it is one of my favorite bands. I also had an anxiety attack listening, but it wasn't so strong as yours that I had to pause, at least I was able to insist on the band and really appreciate the work, the composition and how complex this band is. Your reaction was excellent, it was one of the best and most genuine I’ve seen on KZbin. Just a thank you...

I watch these NeO reaction videos because I love seeing the physical responses the band evokes in many people. Your reaction is crazy though. You looked incredibly distressed at a point, which blows me away for various reasons. I wish I had a recording of my initial reaction to this band. Personally, their music takes me on a journey that I've never been on with any other music. I get the tension/release thing, but my reaction to the tension is to zone out and let it consume me until the release comes. I'm sorry it made you feel anxious, it looked very uncomfortable for you. As others have echoed, their song Eyrie has significantly fewer and shorter blast-beat sections, and there are fewer layers to the music for most of it. I don't think that music is necessarily great if it evokes that sort of reaction in you. If you think you'd be able to listen to this song again or to another one of theirs, I'd be curious to know what you think of them the 2nd time around.

Great reaction and hope you recovered. As has been said, music can cause many emotions, and contrary to popular belief metal is not all about aggression and hatred it is more often about understanding the difficulties of life, learning to live with them and then live with others. I think you have seen this through Fade to Black, Master of Puppets, Cemetary Gates and there are many more. For me being a metalhead is about understanding and being comfortable with yourself first and foremost (even the bits you don't like) and then being tolerant of other's views, beliefs and lives. If you want to dig a bit deeper into the prog/death metal sub-genre then Mid-era Opeth is the daddy (Blackwater Park, Deliverance, Damnation albums), more recently Slice the Cake's (I know it's a daft name for a death metal band) album Odyssey to the West is an absolute classic (reaction to "Stone and Silver Part I - The Mountains of Man" would be worth doing, I think you will like it) and Wilderun's album Veil of Imagination is superb.

you could try Eyrie or And Plague Flowers the kaleidoscope but blast beats are a part of the sound although often not as constant, and you either love it or loathe it it seems. If you watch the live drum playthroughs on Dan Presland's channel you can see how amazing it actually is and how much there is other than blast beats. The hardest job with these guys would be mixing the audio and there is often a lot of discussion around how it was mixed.

If you're willing to try another progressive extreme metal band you could take a listen to Vintersea and their song Old Ones (or the song Illuminated for a bit more mellow song). I'm sorry the blast beats kind of ruined the experience for you. If you really want to try them again, Eyrie is a much less intense song, but it does still have some blast beats in it, a lot less intrusive and ever present than in this song, but they are there. It's softer and more relaxing, less layered, but the same style. One of my favourites too. I don't know if I'd even recommend listening to another song after seeing you get so anxious though. It was really difficult to watch, I wanted to take your headphones off for you lol. I think at this point, that's the only song that is less likely to have a negative effect on you. I would recommend trying this song again in the future though, when/if you think you can handle those drums. It may be a totally different experience later on. Although it was a great experience for some genres, I would *not* want to listen to any kind of extreme metal with headphones coloured so bass-heavy as those I tried given how intense some of the drum parts can be. It was the kick drum! It was relentless! I actually enjoyed the whole song, just was overwhelming with all the layers! 😂

@@ThomasJ_Music yeah some of these genres get pretty intense, and Black Metal doesn't fuck around. Maybe next weekend can we get some live Metallica from the 1989 Seattle concert? I know I ask constantly and it probably gets a bit annoying, but it really is something you've just got to see. I'd love to see your reaction to ...And Justice For All from that concert.

Yeah I deliberately stayed away from the big guns of the channel last week as I didn’t want to just be doing Metallica, Nightwish, Billie Eilish etc. I will return with a few of them this week though

This may be one of the most earnest emotional reactions I've seen for Ne Obliviscaris. Glad you didn't like the song... I guess? Lol.

@@ThomasJ_Music It's cool though. I now learnt that you're really discoveribg the progressive side of music and that's a real passion of mine (started to listen to that stuff at age 11 and I'm now 55...) I have developed my taste to include extreme metal prog in later years but I know that's not for everyone... You might be open for some of the classic (late 60's through 70's) prog stuff on the other hand(?)

Why you wanted drummer to stop? Does it hurt your ears or you just don't like long double beats?

The constant blast beats are actually my biggest gripe with NO. The drum patterns are really weak compared to the rest of the music.
