Just amazing running from a guy who was PEAKING at 38 years of age! I know of no other world class distance runner who could claim to peak after nearly 15 years of international level running! I will always wonder what his secret was?

Can't believe how strong Lopes looks at the end of both of these grueling races. Just amazing and very inspirational.

There is more to it. When Carlos Lopes made his break at 37 km, silver medalist John Treacy couldn't believe it: it looked like he was sprinting! As Lopes himself revealed some years ago, he meticulously prepared himself to run the last 5 km in 14 minutes - and so he did! I'm not quite sure but I think they're still the fastest last 5 km in the History of Marathons...

I read Charlie speddings book "from last to first" and he said at one stage he looked over at lopes, and he was so relaxed he was breathing through his nose only. That's an insane level of fitness

Just read Speddings excellent autobiography from last to first. He said he looked at Lopes as he came alongside him at half way. He had to look again as he was running with his mouth closed and looked like he was just jogging! I saw that great race live on tv into the ealy hours. I used to wear the Spiridon Gold's that Lopes wore and even 'raced' against Spedding once when he came to race in Stockport - finishing 5 mins behind him over 5 miles!

Por acaso só lhe faltou vencer uma medalha em Europeus. 😉 É a única falha numa carreira extraordinária.

The secret was an iron will and the appropriate training under a patient genius, Moniz Pereira, who cared about him (not as a running machine but) as a human being.

The weather conditions in LA did not favour Treacy or Spedding. Treacy had also run a 10,000m Heat and Final at the Games prior to the Marathon. Not to take anything away from Lopes's fantastic victory.

@@tommytempo1 ... Unfortunately weather conditions will never, ever, favour all participants. Anyway those were the times when white runners dominated. Then the north Africans came in and Europeans took second fiddle ever since ! In the 1988 games it was a Portuguese girl that won the 1988 women marathon ( Rosa Motta ).

They all were in those days . Trained hard and long because no one knew any different . Today its all science , heart rate monitors etc etc - and certainly British and European have gone backwards . I'm guessing the Africans still do it the hard way , the old fashioned way .

What was the most amazing thing about the career of this man was how he peaked at all distances between 35-38 years of age after competing for almost 15-16 years at the international level! What was his secret? Anyone want to tell me? I'd love to know!

I think that Lopes would tell that the secret was in having a common and pleasant everyday life, and training hard, under the supervision of Moniz Pereira, who loved his athletes. And, of course, an unbeatable mental strength.

Stronger in the women's side. Jessica Augusto and Dulce Felix have years to compete. Sara Moreira is still young. The women's team were cross country European champions 3 times in a row (2008-2010) and were second in 2011. You cannot expect to win World titles in cross country beating Kenyan or Ethiopian athletes, at least since the 1990's, that is almost asking for miracles LOL
